Series X supports compatible digital purchases and physical discs; Series S is digital-only, so a disc copy cannot be used on it. Compatibility is title-specific rather than a guarantee for every game from an older generation.
The practical rule is simple: check the exact game in Xbox’s official backward-compatibility catalog, then use the edition you own. A supported digital game is downloaded from the owning account’s library. On Series X, a supported disc is inserted to install and play; the disc remains necessary for a disc-based copy. On Series S, you need a supported digital entitlement.

Which Xbox generations work on Series X and Series S?
Both consoles support Xbox One games and a curated selection of Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. “Selected” is important: backward compatibility does not make every Xbox 360 or original Xbox release playable. A game’s presence in the catalog, not merely its age or platform, determines whether it works.
Xbox describes the launch offering as thousands of games spanning four generations. That was a dated description from October 2020, not a permanent count of the current catalog. The supported list and title-specific features can change, so verify an individual game before buying a console or assuming an old disc will work.

Can I play Xbox 360 games on Xbox Series X?
Yes, if the particular Xbox 360 game is in the supported catalog. Series X can run compatible digital licenses and compatible disc-based releases. The console does not automatically support the entire Xbox 360 library.
Using a digital game
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the digital game.
- Open your library or the Store on the Series X and locate the title.
- Choose the compatible version offered for the console and download it.
- Launch the game after installation. If the title is not listed as supported, the console will not turn an ordinary Xbox 360 license into a playable Series X game.
Xbox describes backward compatibility as free. That means there is no separate backward-compatibility fee for a supported game you already own; it does not establish a universal rule that every older title is free to acquire. Store availability and pricing are separate matters and can vary by title and date.
Using an Xbox 360 disc
- Confirm that the game appears in the official catalog.
- Insert the disc into the Series X drive.
- Allow the console to install the compatible game data.
- Keep the disc inserted when you play. It acts as the entitlement for a disc-based copy, so installing the data does not make the physical disc unnecessary.
A disc for a game outside the catalog will not become playable simply because it fits in the drive. Series X’s disc support applies to compatible titles, not to every Xbox 360 or original Xbox release.
Do Xbox One discs work on Series S?
No. Series S has no optical disc drive. Microsoft’s product description calls it an all-digital console, and Xbox explicitly says that although it supports thousands of digital backward-compatible titles, it does not support physical discs: Microsoft’s Series S product page.

That means an Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc collection cannot be used directly on Series S. To play one of those games, you need a supported digital entitlement associated with your account. Buying or owning a physical copy does not itself create a usable digital license on the disc-free console.
Series X versus Series S for older games
| Question | Series X | Series S |
|---|---|---|
| Supported generations | Xbox One and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games | Xbox One and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games |
| Physical game discs | Supported for compatible disc titles | Not supported; the console is all-digital |
| Backward-compatible game version | Xbox says games run with the full power of Series X, without a separate boost mode or downclocking | Backward-compatible games use the Xbox One S version, with platform improvements described by Xbox |
| Possible enhancements | Title-dependent features can include Auto HDR and FPS Boost | Title-dependent features can include Auto HDR and FPS Boost |
The choice therefore depends first on ownership: disc collectors need Series X, while a digital-only library can work on either model if each game is supported. The catalog, not the console label alone, decides whether an Xbox 360 or original Xbox title runs.
What happens technically when a backward-compatible game runs?
Series X uses the console’s full capability
Xbox says backward-compatible games on Series X run with the full power of the console, without a separate “boost mode” or a deliberate downclock. That statement describes the platform’s handling of compatible software; it does not promise that every game is rewritten for a new resolution or frame rate.

Series S uses the Xbox One S version
For backward-compatible games, Xbox says Series S runs the Xbox One S version while applying improved texture filtering, higher and more consistent frame rates, faster load times and Auto HDR. This is a specific technical approach, not a claim that Series S receives every Xbox One X enhancement.

Do not assume a universal output resolution, frame-rate target or graphics setting. The available behavior depends on the game and the features assigned to it. Xbox’s technical explanation is at Xbox Wire’s Series X backward-compatibility article.
Auto HDR and FPS Boost are selective
Auto HDR can add high-dynamic-range presentation to supported older games, while FPS Boost can raise or stabilize frame rates for selected titles. These are optional, title-dependent features rather than universal properties of backward compatibility. A compatible game may receive one, both, or neither.
Does backward compatibility improve graphics or frame rate?
It can, but the exact result belongs to the individual game. The documented improvements include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Faster loading on Series consoles.
- Improved texture filtering.
- Higher or more consistent frame rates for supported software.
- Auto HDR for titles assigned that feature.
- FPS Boost for selected titles.
These improvements should not be read as a blanket remaster. A game can remain at its original resolution, lack FPS Boost, or use a particular Xbox One version with no Xbox One X-specific enhancements on Series S. Check the title’s catalog entry and in-game behavior rather than relying on a generation-wide promise.

How to check a game before you buy or install it
- Open the official Xbox backward-compatibility page.
- Search for the exact game name, including its edition where relevant.
- Confirm that the listing covers the platform and format you own: digital license or physical disc.
- Check any listed enhancement, such as Auto HDR or FPS Boost, without assuming that an unlisted feature is included.
- On Series X, use the disc only if the title is listed as compatible. On Series S, obtain or use the supported digital version.
The catalog is the authoritative practical check because older-generation support is selective. Xbox’s support interface and store listings may display differently over time, and a title’s purchase availability can change even when compatibility remains documented.
What “free backward compatibility” does—and does not—mean
Xbox’s program description says: “Xbox Series X|S Backward Compatibility is free and allows you to play selected Xbox 360, Original Xbox games and Xbox One games you already own on Xbox Series X|S.” The key condition is ownership of a selected game. The feature itself does not establish that every game can still be purchased, that every physical copy converts to digital, or that a delisted title can be newly obtained.
For digital games, sign in with the account holding the license. For discs on Series X, the physical disc remains part of the license check during play. Series S cannot perform that check because it has no disc drive.

Xbox reported several dated milestones:
| Date and source | Reported figure or description | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| October 13, 2020, Xbox Wire | “1000s of games” across four generations at the Series X|S launch | A broad launch description, not an exact live catalog count |
| November 15, 2021, Xbox Wire | More than 70 Xbox 360 and original Xbox games added in the 20th-anniversary update | A dated catalog expansion; it does not mean all games from either generation are supported |
| June 10, 2020, Xbox Wire | More than 100,000 hours of play testing for Series X backward compatibility | A historical development figure reported by Xbox, not an independently audited current metric |
| November 15, 2021, Xbox Wire | Thousands of games replayable through the program since 2015 | Xbox’s dated description of the program’s reach, not a current exact total |
The milestone reports are useful context, but none replaces checking the current catalog for a specific title. See the announcements from October 2020, November 2021 and June 2020 for the original dates and wording.

Common situations and the right console
You own a shelf of Xbox 360 discs
Choose Series X and verify each disc in the catalog. Series S cannot read those discs, regardless of whether the corresponding digital game exists.
Your library is entirely digital
Either console can use supported digital Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Series S is viable only when the games you want are available digitally and supported; Series X adds the option of compatible physical releases.
You want the strongest backward-compatible hardware path
Series X is the model Xbox describes as running compatible games with its full power and it is the only Series model with a disc drive. That does not guarantee a particular resolution or FPS Boost for every title; those remain game-specific.

An older game is missing from the catalog
Treat it as unsupported on Series X|S unless Xbox later adds it. Do not infer compatibility from the game’s publisher, age, or the fact that another title in the same series works.
Bottom line for choosing between Series X and Series S
Backward compatibility on both consoles is a curated platform feature: Xbox One support plus selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Series X accepts supported discs and digital games; Series S accepts digital games only. Performance and visual improvements such as faster loading, Auto HDR and FPS Boost are assigned title by title. Check the official catalog for the exact game and format you own before making the purchase or attempting an installation.
