What Xbox Play Anywhere means
Play Anywhere is a digital license for specific participating games, not a benefit that automatically applies to every Xbox title. When the exact game or edition is eligible and bought digitally, its license works on supported Xbox and Windows devices associated with the owning Xbox account. Xbox says there is no additional Play Anywhere charge. Xbox’s Play Anywhere page provides the current eligibility and device details.
The feature is digital-only. A disc copy does not qualify through Play Anywhere, though an eligible digital code from a participating retailer can. Check the specific game or edition’s listing for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge before buying; the participating catalog can change.
Which devices are supported?
Xbox currently describes support for Xbox consoles, Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, and Windows 11 gaming handhelds. A device being in one of those categories does not guarantee that it can run every participating game: check the game’s PC hardware and input requirements separately.

Xbox’s original 2016 Play Anywhere explainer described the launch-era feature for Xbox One and Windows 10. For current platform wording, use Xbox’s present FAQ rather than treating that historical description as a current compatibility list.
How to access a Play Anywhere game
- Check eligibility. Find the Xbox Play Anywhere badge on the exact game or edition’s store listing, or consult Xbox’s participating-games listing.
- Get the digital license. Buy through the Xbox Store or Windows Store, or redeem an eligible digital code from a participating retailer. A disc purchase is not covered.
- Sign in with the owning Xbox account. Use the account associated with the purchase on the console, PC, or supported handheld.
- Install on the device you want to use. On console, find the game under My Games and Apps > Ready to Install. On a Windows PC or supported handheld, open the Xbox app and look in My Library.
- Check the game’s requirements and resume. Install it on the other supported device, confirm that the device meets the game’s requirements, and continue with the account’s available progress.
What carries over between devices?
Xbox says Play Anywhere carries game progress between supported devices and lists saves, add-ons, and achievements among the items that can follow the player. Eligible content can include add-ons, Season Passes, consumables, and in-game unlocks for a Play Anywhere game the player owns. The exact content available depends on the title and the content involved.

Achievements and Gamerscore are shared rather than separate platform-specific records: Xbox says a single shared set is earned for a Play Anywhere game.

No. Xbox says the same game can be signed into on only one Xbox console, one Windows 10 or 11 PC, or one supported handheld at a time. Play Anywhere lets you move between devices; it does not provide simultaneous play of the same game on multiple devices.

What to check before buying
- Exact title and edition: confirm the Play Anywhere badge; do not assume that another game in the series or a different edition qualifies.
- License format: the license must be digital, including an eligible digital code. A disc alone is not a Play Anywhere license.
- Destination device: make sure it is a supported Xbox console, Windows 10/11 PC, or supported Windows 11 handheld.
- Account access: be ready to sign in with the Xbox account that owns the digital game.
- PC compatibility: check the individual game’s hardware and input requirements for the computer or handheld you intend to use.
- One-device-at-a-time expectation: plan to play the same game on one device at a time.
