YouTube creators earn from ads and Premium through different systems: Watch Page ads share 55% of net ad revenue with eligible partners, Shorts creators receive 45% of their allocation from a shared Creator Pool, and Premium revenue is distributed according to how much Premium members watch a creator’s content. These are shares of different revenue bases—not fixed payments per view or guaranteed earnings. The figures and eligibility thresholds below reflect YouTube Help pages checked on October 3, 2026; YouTube does not state publication dates for those pages.
How YouTube ad revenue reaches creators
The first distinction is where a viewer watches. Long-form and live videos use Watch Page monetization; Shorts use a separate Shorts Feed system. Each has its own monetization module and revenue calculation.
Long-form and live videos: Watch Page ads
The Watch Page is the page dedicated to playing a long-form or live video across YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids. Ads may appear before, during, or after a video, or around it. Creators who accept the Watch Page Monetization Module receive 55% of net revenues from ads displayed or streamed on public videos on the Watch Page, including eligible embedded playback, under YouTube’s stated partner terms. The percentage applies to net ad revenue, not the advertiser’s gross spend or a fixed amount per view. Monetization being switched on does not guarantee that an ad will serve; ads are subject to advertiser-friendly content rules and review.

Shorts: ads in the Shorts Feed
Shorts ads appear between videos in the Shorts Feed. YouTube pools this ad revenue, accounts for music licensing costs, and allocates a Creator Pool based on eligible engaged views and music usage. A creator’s share is based on their share of eligible engaged views; YouTube states that the partner receives 45% of the revenue allocated to that creator from the Creator Pool. This is not 45% of the value of every ad shown near one Short.

How YouTube Premium revenue works
Premium members do not see ads, but YouTube shares their subscription fees with creators. The amount distributed is based on how much Premium members watch each creator’s content, rather than a published flat rate per view. Long-form and live Watch Page content requires the Watch Page Monetization Module; Shorts require the Shorts Feed Monetization Module. Premium revenue is a subscription-funded stream, not ad revenue. YouTube’s help material does not establish one universal Premium payout per view.

The 55%, 45%, and 70% terms are not interchangeable: their bases differ, and none promises a payout amount. Do not multiply total views by one of these percentages to estimate earnings. Shopping is another monetization option YouTube lists, including product tagging through its affiliate program for eligible creators; availability is not universal. Eligibility for YouTube ad revenue
As stated on the YouTube Help eligibility page checked October 3, 2026, the ad-revenue thresholds for the YouTube Partner Program are 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public long-form watch hours in the previous 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. You must also meet YouTube’s acceptance and policy conditions. Thresholds and requirements can change, so check How to earn money on YouTube for current terms. These thresholds are not a guarantee of approval or earnings.

Why there is no reliable universal “pay per view” number
A view count alone does not reveal the revenue base. Watch Page earnings depend on ad revenue generated from viewers; Shorts use the Creator Pool allocation system; Premium depends on member watch behavior. Formats and monetization modules differ, and ad serving is not guaranteed. YouTube explicitly says: “There are no guarantees under the YouTube partner agreement about how much or whether you’ll be paid.”
RPM and CPM are not the same as YouTube’s revenue-sharing percentages. The cited YouTube pages do not provide a universal creator RPM, CPM, or payout estimate, nor a representative earnings dataset by country or gaming niche. Treat any per-view figure as conditional on its stated format, audience, period, and calculation method—not as a promise that applies to every channel.

Other ways creators can earn on YouTube
- Channel memberships: recurring viewer payments for eligible channel benefits; YouTube lists these under the Commerce Product Module.
- Super Chat and Super Stickers: paid fan-funding features during eligible live experiences.
- Super Thanks: a fan-funding option on eligible content.
- Shopping: eligible creators may have product-tagging options, including YouTube’s affiliate program for products from other brands.
YouTube’s stated share for net revenue from memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks is 70% when the Commerce Product Module applies. This is separate from ad and Premium revenue; do not treat these options as available to every creator. For eligibility and current options, consult YouTube’s earning guide.
What this means for gaming creators running live or replay content
Live gaming videos can earn Watch Page ad revenue when eligible and monetized under the Watch Page module; Premium viewing can also contribute based on member watch behavior. A stream’s duration or view count alone does not establish an earnings amount. Ensure the gameplay, music, overlays, and other material meet YouTube’s monetization and copyright rules: a monetized setting does not guarantee ads, and policy review still applies.
