Choose the right HP LaserJet 5200 driver
The LaserJet 5200 supports three printer-description-language (PDL) drivers: PCL 5e, PCL 6, and PostScript 3 emulation. The printer model and the host operating system must both match the package you install. A driver intended for another LaserJet family can install successfully yet expose the wrong paper sizes, duplex options, or print behavior.

Do not install all three unless you have a reason to maintain separate queues. Multiple queues can make it harder to identify the active defaults and can send a document through a language the application was not designed to use.

Check the label on the printer or its configuration page before downloading anything. The 5200 family includes the base 5200 and network-capable 5200n, 5200tn, and 5200dtn variants. The suffix determines which connection methods are available and can affect how Windows discovers the device.

On HP’s LaserJet 5200 driver selector, choose the exact printer family and then select the host operating system. The selector presents operating-system families including Linux and Windows 2000 through Windows 11. HP warns that if an operating system is not listed, it may not provide driver support for that product with that operating system. A listing for Windows 11 does not guarantee that every legacy package will install on every Windows 11 build, so retain the downloaded package and note its date if you are managing several PCs.
Before changing drivers, record the current queue name, port, paper settings, duplex setting, and any custom forms. Those details make it possible to recreate a working queue if a replacement driver resets defaults.

Check the available connections
The LaserJet 5200 hardware provides Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and an IEEE 1284B-compliant parallel port. An EIO slot is also present. Network connectivity is built into the 5200n, 5200tn, and 5200dtn models. Connect the printer using the interface that matches the model and the port configured in Windows.
- USB: Connect directly to the PC while installing, rather than through an unpowered hub. If Windows creates several USB printer ports after repeated attempts, remove unused queues before trying again.
- Parallel: Use a compatible IEEE 1284B cable and select the existing LPT port when adding the printer manually. This is often the most dependable route for a computer that cannot enumerate the legacy device automatically.
- Network: On a network-capable suffix, print or view the printer’s configuration information to identify its address, then add the queue using the detected network printer or the address-based option offered by Windows.
- EIO: Treat an installed EIO networking or interface accessory as part of the printer’s configuration. The driver can expose different capabilities depending on the interface Windows is using.
Install the printer in Windows 11
Start with Microsoft’s troubleshooter
- Open Windows 11’s Get Help app and run the printer troubleshooter.
- Follow its connection and queue checks, then retry a test print.
- If the troubleshooter reports that the driver is missing or unsuitable, continue with a manual installation rather than repeatedly running the same scan.
Install through Windows Settings
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device and wait while Windows searches.
- Choose the LaserJet 5200 only when the displayed model and connection are correct. For a network model, verify that the address belongs to the printer rather than another device.
- If Windows reports that the printer is not found, select the option to add it manually. Choose the existing USB, parallel, or serial port, then select the HP driver from the list or use Have Disk to point to the driver files you downloaded for the 5200.
- Give the queue a clear name such as
HP LaserJet 5200 PCL 6. A name that includes the language prevents confusion if you later add a PCL 5e or PostScript queue. - Print the Windows test page before restoring application-specific settings.
Use the classic printer wizard when automatic discovery fails
Legacy hardware may not answer the discovery request used by modern Windows. In that case, open Control Panel > Devices and Printers, choose Add a printer, and select The printer that I want isn’t listed. Add a local printer with the existing port, select the HP LaserJet 5200 driver from Windows Update or Have Disk, and complete the wizard. This procedure is useful for a direct USB connection, an IEEE 1284B parallel connection, or another existing local port that an automatic installer does not recognize.

Remove and reinstall a damaged queue
- In Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the LaserJet 5200 and choose Remove.
- Disconnect the USB or parallel cable, or temporarily remove the network queue, so Windows does not immediately reuse the same failed instance.
- Restart the PC and printer.
- Install the latest driver package listed for the exact model and Windows edition, then add the printer again using the correct port.
- Restore duplex, paper-source, and custom-form settings only after the test page succeeds.
Clear jobs by resetting Print Spooler
If documents remain at “Printing,” disappear without output, or block every later job, reset the spooler after checking the cable or network path:
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Print Spooler, right-click it, and choose Stop.
- Open
C:WindowsSystem32spoolPRINTERSand delete the files inside that folder. Administrator approval may be required. - Return to Print Spooler, choose Start, and send one small test document.
Do not delete the printer’s driver files as a first response; clearing the queue removes stuck jobs without forcing another driver migration.

Configure accessories and performance options
The Windows and PostScript environments supported by HP can use Driver Autoconfiguration. When bidirectional communication is available, the driver can discover accessories such as the duplexing unit, optional paper trays, and installed DIMMs. After installing or removing hardware, open the printer’s driver properties and use Update Now where that option is available. Then confirm that the paper sources and duplex choices shown in the application match the physical printer.
For a fleet, document five variables for each queue: connection method, driver language, duplex requirement, input capacity, and memory. HP support documentation covers a 500-sheet feeder and a duplexer. Those accessories are useful only when the particular 5200 variant, driver, and physical installation support them. If autodetection is unavailable, configure the installed options manually in the device settings so a two-sided job is not sent to a printer that has no duplexer.

Troubleshoot common “not printing” symptoms
The printer is offline or Windows cannot find it
- Confirm that the printer is powered on and that the cable is firmly seated, or verify that the network model is connected to the same network as the PC.
- Check the queue’s selected port. A USB queue aimed at an old port or a network queue aimed at a changed address will not reach the printer.
- Remove duplicate queues created by earlier attempts, then add one queue with a descriptive name and the correct driver.
Jobs queue but never leave the PC
- Pause and resume the queue once, then cancel the blocked job.
- Reset Print Spooler using the procedure above if later jobs cannot start.
- Install the latest driver listed for the exact operating system; Microsoft notes that most printers require the latest driver to work well.
Pages contain wrong fonts, symbols, or layout
- Switch from PCL 6 to PCL 5e when an older application produces incorrect forms or character placement.
- Use the PostScript driver for a PostScript-based application or a workflow that requires Level 3 compatibility.
- Check that the application is not overriding the queue with a different paper size, orientation, or font substitution.
Duplexing or extra trays are missing
Check the physical installation first, then run Driver Autoconfiguration or use Update Now if the environment supports bidirectional communication. If the option still does not appear, open the driver device settings and select the installed duplexer or feeder manually.
A test page works but an application does not
A successful Windows test page proves that the queue can communicate with the printer, not that every application is using the appropriate PDL. Test the same file with the other supported driver language, beginning with PCL 5e for older software or PostScript for a PostScript workflow. Keep the queue that produces the correct output and remove the unused duplicate when the comparison is complete.
Choose and replace the black toner cartridge
The relevant consumable is an HP LaserJet 5200 black print cartridge. HP’s user guide reports an average yield of 12,000 pages under ISO/IEC 19752. That figure assumes approximately 5% page coverage and an average volume of 2,000 pages per month; actual yield depends on the documents, coverage, print settings, and usage pattern. It is not a guaranteed page count.

- Open the printer’s cartridge access area and remove the spent cartridge according to the user-guide procedure.
- Prepare the replacement cartridge without touching the imaging surface, then install it until it is seated securely.
- Close the access area and print a configuration or test page to confirm registration and print quality.
HP recommends ordering supplies through its support channels and states that it cannot recommend non-HP cartridges. The manufacturer also says damage caused by a non-HP cartridge is not covered by its warranty or service agreements. That is HP’s warranty position; check the terms that apply to your printer and region before choosing a cartridge.
Clean the printer when print quality falls
Paper dust, loose toner, and buildup can produce marks or uneven output. The LaserJet 5200 user guide describes a cleaning mode for paper, toner, and dust buildup. Run the cleaning procedure from the printer’s control panel or driver as documented for your model, then print a diagnostic page. Replace the cartridge only after checking for buildup and confirming that the defect follows the cartridge rather than remaining with the printer’s paper path.
