What hpbf201g.dll is and the safest fix
Recommended Free Tools
hpbf201g.dll is an HP LaserJet 1100 printer-driver component. If hpbf201g.dll is missing, Windows or a print-related program is usually trying to load an incomplete, damaged, or incompatible HP LaserJet 1100 driver package.
The safest fix is not to download the DLL by itself. Remove the old HP printer installation and reinstall the complete driver package from HP’s official LaserJet 1100 Software and Driver Downloads page. The package includes the DLL, INF installation file, catalog, related HPBF files, and other printer-driver components.
This file is not a Windows system DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, or general application dependency. It should not normally be copied manually into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
The archived LaserJet 1100 package associated with this file is an old x86 Windows 2000/XP driver. That matters on Windows 10 and Windows 11, particularly on 64-bit or ARM-based systems. A missing-file message may actually indicate that the complete legacy driver cannot load on the current Windows architecture.

Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the complete HP driver
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Start here if the error appeared after removing the printer, cleaning old software, restoring a backup, or installing a Windows update.
Remove the printer queue
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP LaserJet 1100 queue.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer is not listed, continue anyway. A stale driver can remain even after its visible queue disappears.
Remove the old driver package
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the HP LaserJet 1100 driver if it is listed.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that choice.
- Restart Windows again.
If Windows says the driver is in use, stop the print spooler first:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Right-click Print Spooler and select Stop.
- Remove the driver through Print Server Properties.
- Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and select Start.
- Restart the computer.
Do not delete individual HP DLLs from a driver directory while the queue or spooler still references them. That can leave a broken printer installation behind.
Install the HP package
Open HP’s official HP LaserJet 1100 Software and Driver Downloads page and select the Windows version that most closely matches the computer. HP may show Windows 2000 or Windows XP for this legacy product and may provide no package for newer systems.
Download the complete package, extract it if necessary, and run its setup program. If the package contains an INF file but no working setup program, use the printer installation wizard:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose Add device.
- Select Add manually if automatic detection fails.
- Choose the option to add a local printer.
- Select Have Disk.
- Browse to the extracted HP driver folder.
- Select the HP INF file.
- Complete the installation.
If the package is being installed on a supported modern Windows system, Microsoft’s PnPUtil can add an INF-based driver package from an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt:
pnputil /add-driver "C:PathTodriver.inf" /install
Open Windows Terminal (Admin), replace the path with the actual INF location, and press Enter. Microsoft documents this command in its PnPUtil documentation.
For printer drivers that do not install correctly through PnPUtil, Microsoft’s PrintUI method may work:

How to tell whether this worked
Print a test page from:
Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → HP LaserJet 1100 → Printer properties → Print Test Page
The original error should also disappear when opening the application that triggered it. If the installation fails with a compatibility, signing, or architecture message, continue to Fix 2 rather than copying the DLL manually.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through old driver packages and guessing which related drivers are stale; its free scan shows detected issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the official HP package remains the preferred source for this specific printer.
Fix 2: Check whether the old x86 driver is compatible
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
The archived HP LaserJet 1100 package associated with hpbf201g.dll is an x86 package for older Windows releases. A third-party page labeling a DLL “x64” does not make the complete printer driver a native x64 package. The INF and the entire driver package determine architecture.
Check your Windows architecture
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
Possible results include:
- 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
- 64-bit operating system, ARM-based processor
- 32-bit operating system, x86-based processor
Do not install a 32-bit legacy printer package as though it were a native 64-bit or ARM64 driver. On a 64-bit version of Windows, old printer drivers may be rejected, may install without working, or may produce messages such as:
- The program cannot start because
hpbf201g.dllis missing. - The specified module could not be found.
- The program is not designed to run on Windows.
- Status
0xc000007b.
The last two messages often indicate architecture incompatibility or a damaged package rather than a simple missing file.
Try Windows’ built-in printer driver
If HP does not list a package for your Windows release:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose Add device.
- Select Add manually.
- Choose Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings.
- Select the appropriate port.
- Select Windows Update in the manufacturer and printer lists.
- Look for an HP LaserJet, compatible PCL, or class printer driver.
- Finish the wizard and print a test page.
The available names vary by Windows installation. A compatible or inbox driver may provide printing without loading the old HP software that expects hpbf201g.dll, although it may not provide every legacy feature.
Consider the connection method
If the printer is connected through a print server, the driver may be installed on the server rather than directly on the client computer. A client can continue requesting hpbf201g.dll even after local HP software has been removed.

Remove the old shared printer connection and add it again from the server using a driver supported by the server and client architectures. If the server runs an old operating system, replacing the server-side driver or using a newer supported print server may be necessary.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On ARM-based Windows devices, a native or inbox driver is generally more practical than forcing an old x86 package. If no supported driver path exists, replacing the printer may take less time than repeatedly repairing the legacy installation.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A security product can quarantine a driver file, but the filename alone does not prove that the file is genuine. Do not restore hpbf201g.dll simply because its name begins with hp.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined items.
- Open any entry that identifies the HP driver file or its installation package.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from the official HP package.
- The package was downloaded from HP’s product support page.
- The file is in the expected driver-package location.
- The package and file have a verifiable digital signature where applicable.
- Windows Security identifies it as a mistaken detection rather than a confirmed threat.
If the origin is uncertain, do not restore the isolated DLL. Remove the old installation and download the complete package again from HP.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMicrosoft explains these controls in its Protection History documentation.
Fix 4: Install the driver through the correct printer tools
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
hpbf201g.dll is normally loaded as part of the printer driver. It is not normally a standalone application component that you launch or register.
A complete driver package normally contains:
- An INF file describing installation
- A catalog used for driver signing
- Driver and rendering files
- Related HPBF DLLs
- Language-monitor or printer-support files
- Configuration and supporting files
Microsoft describes this relationship in its documentation about driver-package components.
If you have extracted an HP package, locate its INF file rather than selecting hpbf201g.dll itself. Use the printer wizard, PnPUtil, or PrintUIEntry as described in Fix 1.

Do not use Regsvr32 as a generic repair
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 hpbf201g.dll
Microsoft’s Regsvr32 documentation describes registration for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver DLL is not necessarily a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.
If Regsvr32 reports that the entry point is missing, that does not mean the file is broken. It usually means the command is inappropriate for that DLL. Install the printer package through its INF and setup process instead.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other features are failing
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
hpbf201g.dll is not normally protected as a Windows system file. SFC will not usually restore a missing third-party HP printer DLL. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself is also malfunctioning, such as broken system applications, update failures, corrupted Windows features, or multiple unrelated errors.
Save your work, open Windows Terminal (Admin), and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the printer again.
Microsoft recommends this DISM-then-SFC order in its System File Checker guidance.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of identifying broader Windows problems less repetitive by scanning for reported issues; its free scan shows findings, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and SFC or DISM will not replace a missing HP driver package.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but hpbf201g.dll still fails, that result is expected when the underlying problem is the HP package, printer queue, or driver architecture.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
Time needed: 20–40 minutes
If the error began immediately after a driver installation, cleanup utility, Windows change, or software removal, System Restore may reverse that change.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore.
System Restore can roll back drivers, registry settings, system files, and installed programs without normally changing personal documents. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
This is not a substitute for reinstalling the HP package. If the restore does not resolve the error, remove the stale printer installation and install a supported driver instead.

Why the error appears after the printer was removed
A printer queue stores a reference to a driver. The Windows print spooler can continue using that reference even when the HP control panel, setup program, or visible printer entry has been removed.
Common triggers include:
- Deleting HP files manually
- Removing the printer but leaving its driver package
- Cleaning software that removes “unused” DLLs
- Restoring only part of a system backup
- Migrating to a newer Windows release
- Moving from a local printer to a shared print server
- Installing a driver for the wrong architecture
- Antivirus quarantine
- A per-user spooler or printer connection retaining stale state
If the error appears only for one Windows account, test the printer from another account. A profile-specific queue, permission problem, or per-user spooler reference may be involved. If the printer works but an old application still reports the error, identify the requesting program through Event Viewer or Process Monitor and repair or remove that application.

Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may be from an unrelated package.
- It may have the wrong architecture.
- Its version may not match the INF or related HP files.
- Windows may reject it because the package is unsigned or incomplete.
- Copying it into
System32orSysWOW64may hide the real printer-driver problem temporarily.
The safe source is HP’s official LaserJet 1100 product-support page and its complete driver package. If HP no longer offers a package for your Windows version, use a compatible Windows printer driver, a supported print server, or replacement hardware rather than forcing a random DLL into a system directory.
Likely causes and the correct response
| Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Damaged HP installation | Remove the queue and driver package, then reinstall the complete HP package |
| Stale queue or print-server reference | Delete the old queue and reinstall for the correct architecture |
| Unsupported x86 driver | Use an inbox or compatible driver, separate print server, or replacement printer |
| Antivirus quarantine | Check Protection History and reinstall from HP if the origin is unclear |
| Broader Windows corruption | Run DISM followed by SFC |
| Recent driver or software change | Try System Restore |
| One application still requests the file | Repair or remove that application and inspect its process |
FAQ
Is hpbf201g.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with the Hewlett-Packard HP LaserJet 1100 printer driver. It is not a standard Windows component.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The correct location depends on the installed printer-driver package and Windows version. Copying one DLL does not install the INF, catalog, related files, or spooler configuration.
Is hpbf201g.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The documented legacy package context is x86. Do not assume that an archive label makes the driver compatible with x64 or ARM64 Windows.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will installing Visual C++ fix it?
Usually not. This file belongs to an HP printer driver, not the Visual C++ runtime. Reinstall the complete printer package first.
Can I run regsvr32 hpbf201g.dll?
It is generally the wrong repair. Printer-driver DLLs are installed through the driver package and INF, not necessarily through DLL registration.
Will SFC restore hpbf201g.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this is an HP driver file. Run SFC when other Windows components are also failing.
What if HP provides no Windows 11 driver?
Try Windows’ compatible or inbox printer driver, use a supported print server, or replace the printer. Do not force an incompatible legacy package or download an isolated DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen should I replace the printer?
Replacement is practical when the LaserJet 1100 has no driver supported by the computer’s architecture, cannot work through a compatible class driver or print server, or requires repeated unsafe workarounds to print.
