Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutehpbmiapi.dll is an old Hewlett-Packard printer component, not a general Windows runtime. If Windows says it is missing, cannot be loaded, or failed to register, repair the HP printer software that installed it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record:
- Which HP printer or scanner is involved
- When the error appears: during installation, at sign-in, while printing, or when an old HP program starts
- The exact message, including any HRESULT or error code
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether printing currently works
- Whether antivirus recently quarantined a file
To check your Windows architecture, open Settings → System → About and look at System type. You can also press Windows key + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter. The System Type entry shows whether Windows is x64-based or x86-based.

Do not assume that a message naming C:WindowsSystem32 proves that the file is a 64-bit DLL. A 32-bit installer running on 64-bit Windows can be affected by Windows file-system redirection.

The file is identified as “Hp Missile API Module.” It belongs to Bidi (Missile) User Mode, an internal HP component associated with bidirectional printer communication.
#1 Best Overall
- UPC: 198828789662
- Weight: 10.450 lbs
“Bidi” means bidirectional communication between the printer and Windows. Depending on the HP software package, this type of component can support information such as printer status, supplies, job progress, or device configuration. “Missile” is an internal HP component name. It does not mean that the file is related to weapons, a game, or a Windows feature.
hpbmiapi.dll is:
- An HP printer-driver or printer-software component
- Published by Hewlett-Packard Company
- A historical Win32 DLL associated with older HP packages
- Not a normal Windows system DLL
- Not a DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ runtime file
The filename alone cannot identify the exact HP printer package that installed it. Multiple older HP packages can include related bidirectional components, so identify the printer and installed software before attempting removal.
Do not download the DLL by itself
Avoid DLL download sites and copied files from another computer. A loose DLL can have the wrong:
- Version
- Architecture
- Dependencies
- Digital signature
- Relationship to the installed HP package
It may also leave the Windows Installer database expecting other files or registry entries. Copying a file into C:WindowsSystem32 can therefore change the symptom without repairing the installation.
Use the official HP Customer Support driver page for your exact printer model, Windows edition, and architecture. If your organization manages printers centrally, obtain the package from the administrator who maintains that print server instead.
Fix 1: Repair the HP software already installed
This is the quickest fix when the HP package is present but one of its files or installer registrations is damaged.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter to open Programs and Features.
- Look for entries beginning with HP, Hewlett-Packard, or the printer’s model name.
- Select the likely printer software entry.
- Choose Change, Modify, or Repair if available.
- Complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Try printing or repeat the action that produced the error.
If the package offers only Uninstall, do not remove it until you have located the correct replacement package for the printer. An uninstall may remove scanning utilities, status tools, or the printer queue.

A repair is more appropriate than a DLL replacement because it can restore the file, its dependencies, its registry information, and the Windows Installer records together.
Fix 2: Remove the printer and reinstall its complete HP package
Use this path when Repair is unavailable, the installation is incomplete, or the same error returns after repair.

Next, remove the related HP software from Programs and Features if it remains listed. Restart Windows before reinstalling.
Remove an obsolete driver from Print Management
Windows may retain an old driver even after the visible printer disappears.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printmanagement.msc. - Press Enter.
- In the left pane, open Print Servers.
- Open the entry for your computer.
- Select Drivers.
- Find the obsolete HP driver.
- Right-click it and choose Remove Driver Package if available.
- Confirm the removal.
You may need administrator permission. Windows may refuse to remove a driver that is still being used by another printer queue. Remove every queue that depends on that driver, restart the Print Spooler service or Windows, and try again.
If printmanagement.msc is unavailable in your edition of Windows, do not delete random files from the driver store. Remove the printer through Settings and use the HP installer’s cleanup or uninstall option instead.

Install the correct package
Download the driver or full software package from HP Customer Support by selecting:
- The exact printer model
- Your Windows version
- The matching architecture, when HP provides separate choices
- The current package recommended for that printer
Run the installer as administrator. Allow it to install the complete package rather than copying individual files. Restart Windows when the installation finishes, then print a test page.
A successful repair normally means that the HP installation completes without the DLL message, the printer appears in Printers & scanners, and a test page prints.
When manually comparing driver architecture, remember:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A 32-bit HP package may be required for an older printer component even on 64-bit Windows.
- A 64-bit package cannot be substituted just because it has the same filename.
- A DLL copied from another computer may not match the installer or printer driver.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through several driver packages and guessing which one is stale; its free scan shows what it identifies, while driver installation and repair require the full version. For this file, however, reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix.
Fix 3: Interpret registration errors correctly
Older HP installers may report messages such as:
Error 1904. Module ...hpbmiapi.dll failed to registerThe module ...hpbmiapi.dll could not be registeredHRESULT -2147024703Error code 0x8002801c
A registration failure is different from a missing-file error. The file may exist, but Windows Installer may be unable to register it because of a damaged package, missing dependency, permissions problem, architecture mismatch, or blocked file.

When regsvr32 applies
regsvr32.exe is not a universal DLL repair command. It works with DLLs that provide the COM registration entry point named DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents its behavior and syntax here.
Public information does not reliably establish the required exports for every version of hpbmiapi.dll. Do not blindly run:
regsvr32 hpbmiapi.dll
First repair or reinstall the HP package. Use manual registration only if the HP installer or HP support specifically instructs you to do so.
If HP provides that instruction, use the executable matching the DLL:
For a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:pathtohpbmiapi.dll"
For a 64-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows:
%WINDIR%System32regsvr32.exe "C:pathtohpbmiapi.dll"
Replace the path with the location supplied by the legitimate HP installer. Do not guess a path or register a downloaded file.
If the command reports that the module failed to load, that may indicate a missing dependency rather than a registration problem. Return to the HP package repair and inspect the installer log.
Fix 4: Check Event Viewer to identify the triggering package
Event Viewer can show whether the error comes from Windows Installer, an HP setup program, or another application.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Choose Filter Current Log in the right pane.
- Filter for MsiInstaller, Application Error, or SideBySide sources if available.
- Look around the time of the failure.
- Open entries that mention
hpbmiapi.dll, HP, the printer model, or an installation product name.
Record the event’s:
- Product name
- Application or package name
- Error code
- File path
- Timestamp
- Any dependency named in the details
This can reveal that the failing item is an old 32 Bit HP BiDi Channel Components Installer, not the printer queue you were trying to use. If more than one HP printer package is installed, the event may point to a different device.
Fix 5: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or isolate an old printer component. Do not restore it automatically.
In Windows Security:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the HP error began.
- Open any entry involving
hpbmiapi.dllor the HP installer. - Check the detected path and originating program.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:

- It came from the legitimate HP installer
- The path belongs to the expected HP installation
- The installer was obtained from HP or your organization
- A current security scan does not identify the file as malicious
Microsoft’s guidance for Protection History is available here.
If the file appeared in an unexpected folder, was created recently without an HP installation, or has an unknown origin, leave it quarantined. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan. For a more persistent concern, use Microsoft Defender Offline scanning, which is documented here.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows components
hpbmiapi.dll is normally a third-party HP file, so System File Checker may not restore it. Use Windows repair commands when the HP installer also reports general component corruption, Windows Update problems, damaged system files, or failures involving other protected Windows components.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the HP repair or installation.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The official procedure is documented here.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If DISM says that source files cannot be found, the Windows component store or Windows Update may be damaged. Microsoft documents using a matching repair source with:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid path to matching Windows installation media or another approved repair source. Do not use an arbitrary folder copied from another computer.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of repeating SFC and DISM easier by showing what it identifies as damaged; its free scan reports findings, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the HP package that owns this file.
Fix 7: Check Device Manager and Windows Features only when the error points there
Device Manager is useful when the HP installer also reports an unknown device, a printer driver problem, or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Imaging devices.
- Look for the HP device or a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or select Browse my computer for drivers if you already have the correct HP package.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not uninstall unrelated devices merely because the DLL error exists. If the printer is working and Device Manager is clean, focus on the HP software and driver store.
Windows Features are generally not the remedy for this file. Do not enable .NET Framework, DirectPlay, legacy components, or other features unless the exact error names that feature. Likewise, Visual C++ and DirectX redistributables are not normal fixes for hpbmiapi.dll.
If printing works but the error keeps returning
A working printer with a recurring old installer message often indicates an obsolete HP self-repair action or a leftover bidirectional component. In that situation:

- Check Print Management for unused HP drivers.
- Check Event Viewer for the product that starts the repair.
- Remove only the obsolete printer queue and driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current HP package for the printer you still use.
Do not replace a working system file merely to silence an installer event. If no current HP package is available and the printer works, document the event and contact HP support rather than forcing registration.

When to use System Restore
System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after a known HP driver change and the current package cannot be repaired.
Open Control Panel → Recovery → Open System Restore, select a restore point from before the driver change, and review the affected programs before confirming. System Restore should not be the first choice when a current HP driver package is available, and it will not correct a mismatched installer downloaded afterward.
What to give HP support
If the problem remains, collect:
- Printer model
- Windows edition and build
- 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- HP driver or software package name
- Package version, if shown
- Exact error text
- HRESULT or error code
- Event Viewer entry
- Whether
hpbmiapi.dllwas quarantined - Whether printing works
- What happened after removing the printer and driver
Do not email a random copy of the DLL as the solution. Provide the installer log or Event Viewer details instead.
FAQ
Is hpbmiapi.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a file shipped with Windows itself. It is associated with Hewlett-Packard printer software and the Bidi (Missile) User Mode component.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which HP printer installs it?
The filename alone cannot identify one exact printer model. Older HP printer and driver packages can include related bidirectional components. Use Programs and Features, Event Viewer, and Print Management to identify the package on your computer.
Should I download hpbmiapi.dll?
No. Use the complete HP driver or software package for the exact printer model. A standalone file may be unsafe, incompatible, or unable to repair the installer’s missing registry entries and dependencies.
Will installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Usually not. Those runtimes are unrelated unless the exact error names a missing file from one of them. The normal remedy is HP package repair or reinstallation.
Can I register it with regsvr32?
Only when the HP installer or HP support specifically directs you to do so. regsvr32 requires a compatible DLL that supports the expected registration entry point, and the correct executable depends on the DLL architecture.
Why does the message mention System32?
A 32-bit installer on 64-bit Windows can be affected by file-system redirection. The displayed path does not, by itself, prove that the DLL should be replaced with a 64-bit copy.
What if SFC says it found no problems?
That result can be expected because hpbmiapi.dll is not normally a protected Windows component. Repair the HP printer package instead.
What if antivirus removed the file?
Review Protection History, verify that the file came from a legitimate HP installer, scan the system, and reinstall the complete HP package. Do not restore an unknown copy simply because its filename matches.
What is the safest first step?
Identify the affected printer, remove its obsolete queue and driver if necessary, and reinstall the complete HP package matched to your Windows architecture.
