olfdnt40.dll errors usually point to a damaged or incomplete Symantec Fax Starter Edition printer driver from an old Office 2000 installation, not a missing modern Windows component. The safest fix is to repair or remove that complete fax component through Office Setup rather than downloading a loose DLL or copying it into System32.
What this file actually does
olfdnt40.dll is a 32-bit printer-driver DLL identified as part of the Symantec Fax Starter Edition Printer Driver. Microsoft distributed that fax component with some Microsoft Office 2000 installations.

The file belongs to the fax printer package used by the legacy Office fax feature. It is not:
- A standard Windows runtime DLL
- A Visual C++ Redistributable file
- A DirectX component
- A .NET Framework file
- A normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL
- A file that should normally be placed in
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64
On affected Windows NT-based systems, the file was associated with the print-driver directory:

- 9,600 BPS fax modem transmits at about 15 seconds per page
- 512 KB memory stores up to 25 pages
- 50-Sheet paper capacity
C:WindowsSystem32SpoolDriversW32x86
Some installations placed it inside a numbered folder beneath W32x86. The exact path can therefore vary.
The fax driver also used related files, including:
olfunt40.dll
olfmnt40.dll
olfpnt40.dll
olfaxdrv.fad
That is why replacing only olfdnt40.dll often fails. The printer registration, companion files, and driver configuration must agree with one another.
Causes of the error by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| The message appears when starting an old Office program | Symantec Fax Starter Edition was omitted or damaged | Repair Office 2000 and add the fax component |
| Office Setup requests the original CD | Windows Installer is trying to restore an omitted fax feature | Provide legitimate Office installation media and reinstall the component |
| A Symantec Fax printer exists but has incomplete properties | The legacy printer driver is partially removed | Remove and reinstall the fax printer through Office Setup |
| The error started after antivirus or cleanup activity | A file may have been quarantined or deleted | Check quarantine, then reinstall the complete component if necessary |
| The message appeared after uninstalling Office or restoring an image | A stale fax-printer registration remains | Remove the obsolete fax component and printer |
| Other Windows features also fail | Broader Windows component corruption is possible | Run DISM, then SFC |
| A modern unrelated application names the DLL | A stale printer registration or bundled legacy dependency may be involved | Identify the calling program and inspect its path before changing files |
Common wording includes:
This application failed to start because olfdnt40.dll was not found.
You may also see “olfdnt40.dll is missing,” “Error loading olfdnt40.dll,” or “The specified module could not be found.” The wording alone does not identify the cause. The application that displays it and the path it expects are more useful.

Check the triggering program
Write down the exact moment the message appears:
- When Windows starts
- When an Office application opens
- When you open Printers
- When you send a fax
- When a particular document opens
- When a third-party application starts
If the error appears with an Office 2000 application or the Symantec Fax printer, the Office component is the primary suspect.
If it appears with a modern application unrelated to Office, do not assume that application legitimately needs the DLL. It may be loading an old printer registration or an obsolete dependency left behind by a previous installation.
Check Event Viewer
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Open Application.
- Look for an error at the same time as the DLL message.
- Record the application name, faulting module, and file path if shown.
Also check Windows Logs > System for print-spooler errors. Do not treat every spooler event as proof that olfdnt40.dll is corrupt, but the timing can distinguish a printer problem from an application problem.

Fix 1: Repair Office 2000 and add Symantec Fax Starter Edition
This is the most appropriate repair when the error involves Office 2000 or its fax printer.
You need the original Office 2000 installation CD or another legitimate installation source that matches the installed edition. Do not mix files from unrelated Office releases.
From the Office installation source
- Close all Office programs.
- Insert the Office 2000 CD or mount the legitimate installation source.
- Open the source in File Explorer.
- Run
Setup.exe. - If Windows asks for administrator permission, approve it.
- Choose the maintenance, customization, or feature-change option.
- Select the option to add or remove features.
- Find Symantec Fax Starter Edition in the feature tree.
- Select the option to install it on the local computer.
- Continue through Setup.
- Restart Windows if Setup requests it.
- Test the old Office application and the fax printer.
The labels differ between Office 2000 editions, but the important choice is to add or reinstall Symantec Fax Starter Edition, not merely to copy one file.
If Office prompts for the CD automatically
Windows Installer may request the original source when an Office 2000 feature was omitted from a customized installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Note the drive or source location requested by the dialog.
- Provide the matching Office installation media.
- Allow Setup to complete the repair.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the operation that previously produced the error.
If the installation source is unavailable, do not download an isolated DLL as a substitute. Locate the correct licensed installation media or remove the obsolete fax component.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair is successful when:
- The original Office program opens without the DLL message.
- The Symantec Fax printer opens its properties normally.
- Sending a test fax no longer produces a missing-file error.
- Event Viewer no longer records a matching application or print-driver failure.
If another fax-driver file is reported as missing, stop replacing files individually. That result means the component is still incomplete and should be reinstalled as a package.
Fix 2: Remove and reinstall the damaged fax printer
Use this path when the printer exists but has incomplete properties, fails during printing, or produces the error when you open the printer list.

On Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices on Windows 11, or Devices on Windows 10.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Symantec Fax printer if it is listed.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Office 2000 Setup maintenance procedure described above.
- Add or reinstall Symantec Fax Starter Edition.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Confirm that the fax printer has been recreated.
The modern Settings interface may not fully remove an old spooler package. If the printer remains listed, open Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click the fax printer, and select Remove device.

Do not manually delete files from the spool-driver directory while the print spooler is using them. That can leave the printer registration in a worse state.
On older Windows versions
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Printers and Faxes or Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the Symantec Fax printer.
- Select Delete or Remove device.
- Restart the computer.
- Run Office 2000 Setup.
- Reinstall the Symantec Fax Starter Edition feature.
If the printer cannot be removed, restart the Print Spooler service and try again:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Locate Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Try removing the fax printer again.
If the printer still cannot be removed, do not start deleting random files under SpoolDrivers. Remove the orphaned Office installation or use a supported Windows printer-management procedure instead.
Fix 3: Update or reinstall a real printer driver
olfdnt40.dll is a legacy fax-printer file, so a current printer driver will not normally replace it. However, this step matters if the message appears alongside problems with a physical printer or a newer printer driver.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, where present, Software devices.
- Look for a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider and driver date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
For a manufacturer-specific driver, download it only from Windows Update or the printer manufacturer’s official support page. After installing it, restart Windows and test printing.
If the current driver is the problem:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the printer device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from Windows Update or the manufacturer.
This procedure may repair a modern printer, but it does not recreate the Office 2000 fax component. For olfdnt40.dll itself, Office Setup remains the correct source.
Manually comparing driver versions across Windows installations is tedious, especially when several old printer packages are present. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation through the full version is optional. It is not a replacement for reinstalling Symantec Fax Starter Edition from matching Office media.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and cleanup history
A security product or cleanup utility may have removed a legacy driver file. That is a possibility, not proof of a known antivirus campaign involving this filename.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open your antivirus or Windows Security application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or the equivalent area.
- Search for
olfdnt40.dll. - Check the detection details and original path.
- Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error.
- If the file came from the original Office installation and the detection is confirmed to be a false positive, follow the security product’s restore process.
- Reinstall the complete fax component through Office Setup afterward.
- Run a full malware scan.
If the file came from an unknown DLL website, do not restore it. Remove it and reinstall the component from the legitimate Office source.
A quarantined file may not be the only missing item. The related DLLs and OLFAXDRV.FAD must also be present and correctly registered with the printer package.
Fix 5: Run DISM and System File Checker for broader Windows damage
olfdnt40.dll is associated with a legacy Office printer component, so SFC and DISM are not the first repair tools for an isolated error. Use them when Windows has additional symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, failed updates, recurring system-component errors, or SFC reports involving protected Windows files.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run SFC second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary and run:

Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Protected Windows files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and retest.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Review the CBS log and address the broader Windows issue.
These commands do not guarantee restoration of olfdnt40.dll. They repair protected Windows components, not necessarily an Office 2000 fax-driver package.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real issue is a missing Office source or stale printer registration. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show broader Windows problems; its free scan identifies findings, while repairs through the full version are optional. Use Office Setup when the evidence points specifically to the fax component.
Do not download `olfdnt40.dll from a random DLL site
A standalone DLL download is a poor repair for this file because it can:
Rank #3
- Convenient, easy-to-operate faxing
- Black-and-white copying with up to 400 x 400 dpi resolution
- 9,600 BPS fax modem transmits at about 15 seconds per page

- Contain malware or an unwanted modification
- Be the wrong 32-bit build

- Lack
olfunt40.dll,olfmnt40.dll,olfpnt40.dll, orolfaxdrv.fad - Fail to recreate the printer registration
- Leave the print spooler pointing to an invalid package
- Put a legacy driver in the wrong folder
Do not copy it into both System32 and SysWOW64. A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit applications, but that does not mean a random 32-bit DLL belongs in either system folder.
The safe source is the original Office 2000 installation media or a legitimate installation source matching the installed edition. For a modern physical printer, use Windows Update or the printer manufacturer’s official driver source.
regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is a registration utility. It calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer or DllUnregisterServer entry point. It is not a general-purpose command for repairing every missing DLL.
There is no verified reason to treat olfdnt40.dll as an independently registerable COM or ActiveX DLL. The file is part of a printer-driver package, so this command is generally inappropriate:
regsvr32 olfdnt40.dll
Running it may produce an error such as a missing entry point, or it may create the false impression that the driver has been repaired. Reinstall the complete fax component through Office Setup instead. Microsoft’s documentation for regsvr32 describes its registration purpose, not a universal DLL-repair function.

Windows Features will not restore this file
Windows optional features are not a substitute for Office 2000 Setup.
To check the available Windows features:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the list.
- Close the dialog without enabling unrelated features.
Do not enable a random legacy feature hoping it will install olfdnt40.dll. The Symantec Fax Starter Edition component came through the Office installation, not as a normal current Windows feature.
If you need a supported fax workflow on a current system, use the software and printer solution supplied for that system. Do not attempt to recreate an obsolete Office 2000 fax environment by turning on arbitrary legacy components.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When removing the fax component is safer
If you no longer use Office 2000 or fax printing, removal is usually safer than restoration.
Remove the obsolete component when:
- The error comes from an Office installation you no longer use.
- The fax printer is an orphaned entry.
- You cannot obtain legitimate matching Office media.
- The component prevents printer management from completing.
- The computer has already been migrated to a current Office release.
- The fax feature is not required for business or archival workflows.
Before removing it, confirm that no required documents or workflows depend on the fax printer.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Locate the old Microsoft Office installation.
- Select its menu.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Uninstall, depending on the available options.
- If Office Setup opens, remove the fax feature through its feature tree.
- If Office 2000 is no longer needed, uninstall the obsolete Office installation.
- Remove the remaining Symantec Fax printer from Printers & scanners.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete individual DLLs from the spool-driver folder first. Let the installer remove its own files and registrations.
Current Microsoft Office repair instructions apply to supported newer Office products and do not automatically repair Office 2000. If the old installation is no longer required, removal is preferable to trying to make an unsupported component work indefinitely.
What Windows 10 and Windows 11 users should know
Windows 10 and Windows 11 can encounter this error after an upgrade, disk-image restoration, Office removal, or migration from an older computer. That does not make olfdnt40.dll a current Windows file.
A modern system may be showing the message because:

- An old fax printer registration survived an upgrade.
- A startup entry still points to an Office 2000 component.
- An old application is being launched in compatibility mode.
- A print spooler package is incomplete.
- A third-party program bundled an obsolete fax dependency.
Do not place the DLL into system directories as a compatibility experiment. First identify the calling executable, then choose between repairing the matching Office installation and removing the obsolete fax component.
If you are trying to use a supported modern printer, follow Microsoft’s guidance to update, remove, and reinstall the printer rather than restoring this legacy DLL. A modern printer driver is not expected to contain olfdnt40.dll.

FAQ
Is olfdnt40.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a 32-bit legacy printer-driver file associated with Symantec Fax Starter Edition from some Office 2000 installations.
Which Office versions installed it?
The documented relationship is with Office 2000 installations that included Symantec Fax Starter Edition. Do not assume that newer Office releases install it.
Should I put it in System32?
No. The historical driver location was under the Windows print-driver folders, not the normal system DLL location. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create another incorrect installation.
Will regsvr32 fix it?
Usually not. This file should be restored as part of the complete fax printer package, not registered as a general-purpose DLL.
Can SFC restore the file?
Not reliably. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It does not replace a missing Office 2000 fax-driver package.
Is the file malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that. A file from the original Office installation can be evaluated in context, but a file downloaded from an unknown source should not be trusted merely because it has the expected name.
What if I do not need fax printing?
Remove the obsolete Office fax component and printer rather than rebuilding it. This avoids leaving a damaged legacy driver attached to the print spooler.
What if the message names a modern application?
Identify that application and its file path first. It may have a stale printer dependency, an old bundled component, or an unrelated installation problem. Reinstalling Office 2000 without confirming the caller may not help.
What is the safest fix?
For an Office 2000 or Symantec Fax error, run the matching Office Setup and add or reinstall Symantec Fax Starter Edition. If the component is no longer needed, remove it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
