hpc309at.dll is an HP printer-driver file, not a Windows runtime such as Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. When hpc309at.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the usual solution is to repair or reinstall the HP Photosmart Premium C309-series printer software rather than download the DLL separately.

1. Identify the printer that installed the file
Time needed: 2–5 minutes
First check whether you still use an HP Photosmart Premium C309-series printer.
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Review the installed printers for an HP Photosmart Premium C309, C309a, or a similarly named entry.
- Select a printer and open Printer properties or Manage to view its model and driver information.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the suspected HP printer.
- Choose Manage and then Printer properties.
You can also open Control Panel, select View devices and printers, and look for old or duplicate HP entries.
If the error started after removing an HP printer, upgrading Windows, restoring a backup, or running disk cleanup, Windows may still be trying to start an old HP utility or printer queue. If you no longer own the printer, skip to the obsolete-printer section below.
2. Remove the old printer and add it again
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Removing the printer entry forces Windows to rebuild its connection to the driver.

- Select the affected HP printer.
- Choose Remove or Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device or Add a printer or scanner.
- Wait while Windows searches.
- Select the HP printer and complete the setup.
If the printer is connected by USB, reconnect it only when Windows asks or after the restart. For a network printer, ensure the printer and computer are connected to the same network.
Then print a test page:
- Open the printer’s Manage screen.
- Select Print a test page.
- If available, open the HP scanning application and test scanning separately.
A successful test page indicates that Windows can load the required driver components. If the same hpc309at.dll message returns, continue with a full driver removal.
3. Remove the stale driver through Device Manager
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Use this step when the printer entry keeps returning, several duplicate HP printers exist, or Windows says the driver cannot be installed.

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the affected HP device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows shows a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it.
- Confirm Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the printer through Add device or the HP printer setup package.
The exact Device Manager category and menu labels vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Do not uninstall unrelated printers or imaging devices.
For deeper cleanup, open Control Panel > Devices and Printers, select an empty area of the window, and choose Print server properties from the toolbar or menu. On the Drivers tab, remove an obsolete HP C309 driver only if you are certain no working HP printer still depends on it. Windows may request administrator approval.
4. Reinstall the complete HP or Windows driver package
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
The safest source is HP’s official support page for the exact Photosmart Premium C309 or C309a model. Search HP Support by the full model name, select the installed Windows version, and use the printer software installation workflow. Do not select a similarly named Photosmart model.
HP’s current Windows documentation lists the C309 family with a Windows in-box driver on Windows 10. That means Windows may be able to install a usable driver without the older full HP software package.
Try Windows first:
- Remove the existing printer as described above.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Settings > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Choose the detected printer.
- Allow Windows to install the driver.
- Print a test page.
If the in-box driver does not provide scanning or another feature you need, install the exact software package from HP Support instead. Reboot after installation, even if the installer does not require it.

Manually copying hpc309at.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder is not a substitute for this process. The driver may require companion files, registry entries, configuration data, and dependencies. A copied file can also have the wrong architecture or be modified.
When Windows repeatedly offers an incompatible package, confirm your architecture under Settings > System > About > System type. A 32-bit DLL cannot replace a 64-bit driver component, and a 64-bit package is not automatically correct for every printer installation.

5. Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may quarantine a legitimate driver after a scan, especially if the file was already damaged or the driver package was incomplete.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an item involving
hpc309at.dllor HP printer software. - Review the original file path and detection details.
- Do not restore the file if the path, publisher, or detection is unclear.
- Run a full scan.
- Reinstall the printer driver from HP Support if the file was removed.

6. Repair Windows components only when other system files are also failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and SFC are not the primary repair for an HP printer-driver DLL. Use them when Windows also reports damaged system files, Windows features fail, updates are broken, or unrelated applications show missing-system-file errors.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Allow each command to complete. Restart Windows afterward and test the printer again.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, retry the printer. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, repeat the HP driver removal and installation rather than copying hpc309at.dll manually.

7. Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair
Time needed: 1 minute
Do not normally run:
regsvr32 hpc309at.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Printer-driver binaries do not automatically qualify as COM components. If regsvr32 reports that the entry point is missing, that does not prove hpc309at.dll is corrupt.
Reinstall the printer driver instead. Registration commands are appropriate only when the vendor’s documentation explicitly identifies a DLL as a COM server and provides the correct registration procedure.

If the error continues after reinstalling
Check whether the message appears only when a particular HP utility starts.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for HP software.
- Remove obsolete HP utilities related to the unused printer.
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable leftover HP startup software that no longer has a corresponding printer.
- Restart Windows.
If the error occurs during printing, check Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System.
- Look for entries at the time of the failure.
- Note the printer driver name and the application that reported the error.
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that hpc309at.dll itself is absent. The DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. Reinstalling the complete package repairs that relationship more reliably than replacing one file.

Which printer uses hpc309at.dll?
