Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the Canon printer driver
This is the most likely solution because printer drivers are installed as complete packages. A standalone DLL does not include the driver’s catalog signature, dependencies, language resources, or model-specific files.
1. Identify the exact printer model
Check the label on the printer, the existing printer entry in Windows, or the Canon software already installed. Record the full model name rather than using a generic description such as “Canon inkjet.”

Also check whether Windows is 64-bit, 32-bit, or ARM-based:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
A 32-bit driver can be legitimate on 64-bit Windows, so do not choose a package based only on the operating system’s bitness. The driver must match the printer package and the process that uses it.
2. Remove the existing printer
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Choose Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
Restart Windows after removing the printer. If more than one Canon printer or old Canon package is installed, remove only entries you recognize. Multiple models can leave separate driver packages under the print-spool directory.
3. Install the correct Canon package
Use Canon’s official support and download area, search for the exact printer model, and select the installed Windows version. Download the offered printer driver or MP Drivers package, then run the installer.

The repair worked if the printer installs without the DLL warning, the Canon utility opens normally, and Windows can print a test page. If the installer still reports cnbbr309.dll, remove the printer again, restart, and install the package after checking the model and architecture.

Fix 2: Add the printer through Windows
Use this method when the Canon installer fails, does not support your Windows architecture, or you are using Windows on an ARM device.

- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device or Add a printer or scanner.
- Wait while Windows searches.
- Select the Canon printer if it appears.
- If it does not appear, select Add a new device manually.
- Follow the connection and driver prompts.
- Choose Windows Update or the Canon driver you downloaded when Windows asks for a driver.
For a network printer, confirm that the computer and printer are connected to the intended network. For a USB printer, try a direct USB port rather than a hub.
Test printing after setup. If Windows adds the printer but the old error remains, uninstall obsolete Canon software from Settings > Apps > Installed apps and reinstall the printer package cleanly.

Fix 3: Update or reinstall the driver through Windows
Windows Update may have a newer compatible driver, especially after a Windows upgrade.

- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Windows Update and open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates if it is available.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a Canon printer-driver update if one is listed.
You can also check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on how the device appears.
- Right-click the Canon device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If the update does not resolve the error, right-click the Canon device again, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the correct Canon package. Do not select options that remove unrelated hardware.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a driver file after an update or may flag a damaged package. Check the protection history before assuming the file was deleted.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving Canon software or the printer driver.
- Review the detected file path and publisher information.
Restore a file only when it is clearly identified as part of a Canon-signed installation that you trust. Do not restore an unknown file merely because its name is cnbbr309.dll. Reinstalling the driver from Canon is safer than restoring an isolated file.

- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the printer.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 cnbbr309.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. Printer-driver DLLs and .mui language-resource files are not automatically self-registering COM or OLE components. If the required registration entry point is absent, regsvr32 fails and does not repair the driver.
Use the Canon installer or Windows printer installation process instead. Microsoft explains the correct use and common errors for Regsvr32.
Fix 7: Use Windows Features only when a print component is disabled
Windows Features is not a source for cnbbr309.dll, but a disabled printing component can prevent printer setup.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review Print and Document Services.
- Leave required subcomponents enabled if your printer workflow needs them.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows.
Do not enable unrelated features as a substitute for a Canon driver. If the printer uses a special protocol or scanning component, install that component from the Canon package after confirming the model.

Why random DLL downloads do not fix this reliably
A DLL download sites site may provide the wrong file, architecture, language resource, or release. It may also omit dependencies and the signed driver package that Windows expects. Copying a file into C:WindowsSystem32 can create a second mismatch while leaving the damaged printer installation untouched.
Public inventories report both CNBBR309.DLL and CNBBR309.DLL.mui. They also report file details and spool-driver paths, but those third-party records are not universal Canon specifications. Do not assume that every Windows computer should contain the same file at one fixed path.
A manual copy is appropriate only from a verified Canon installer or a trusted backup made for the same printer model, Windows version, architecture, language, and driver release. In normal troubleshooting, reinstall the complete driver.
Prevention after the repair
- Keep the printer model and driver download details with your Windows setup notes.
- Use Windows Update or Canon’s official model-specific support page for driver updates.

Is cnbbr309.dll a Windows system file?
