1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe messages may say “hpcabout.dll is missing,” “hpcabout.dll was not found,” “Failed to load hpcabout.dll,” or “The application could not be started because hpcabout.dll is missing.” An error may also report that the file is corrupt, cannot be found, or could not be loaded.
The 60-second answer
hpcabout.dll is associated with the user-interface portion of legacy HP LaserJet printer-driver software. It is not a normal Windows system DLL, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET component.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The safest fix is to identify the HP printer that installed it, remove the damaged or obsolete HP printer software and driver, then install the exact model’s current driver from HP or use the compatible Windows printer driver. Do not download an isolated copy of hpcabout.dll.
If the printer still works and the error appeared after removing old HP software, the message may come from an orphaned startup entry, scheduled task, or printer-driver reference. In that case, remove the unused HP driver and its leftover reference instead of restoring the DLL.

What installed hpcabout.dll
Historical printer-driver inventories and public file records identify hpcabout.dll as an HP LaserJet Printer Driver UI Extension associated with Hewlett-Packard printer software. It has appeared alongside other HP driver modules in printer-driver folders.
The file is commonly associated with older HP LaserJet packages rather than every HP printer model. The exact driver package depends on the printer and Windows architecture. A 32-bit driver file and a 64-bit driver file are not interchangeable.
Older records place the file in locations such as:
C:WindowsSystem32spooldriversw32x863
On some 64-bit Windows installations, related files appear below the driver store:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository
These paths do not prove that every copy is genuine. Check the file’s location, Properties dialog, digital signature, and antivirus result before trusting it.
Why the error appeared
The most likely causes are:
- An HP printer-driver installation was interrupted or damaged.
- Windows was upgraded and the old HP package became incompatible.
- HP printer software was removed while a startup reference remained.
- A printer was replaced, but its old driver stayed installed.
- Antivirus software quarantined a driver component.
- The wrong driver architecture was installed.
- A legacy HP driver is no longer supported by the current Windows version.
- A random application directory contains a file with the same name.
The error alone does not identify the exact printer or program. Note the complete dialog, including any executable name or file path, before changing anything.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct HP printer package
This is the most likely solution when the printer is still in use.
Identify the printer
- Check the label on the printer.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Note every HP printer listed.
- Open the printer and record its model name.
If several HP printers are listed, work out which one was installed around the time the error began. Do not select a driver based only on the word “LaserJet.”

Remove the old printer
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
Removing the printer does not always remove its driver package. Continue with the driver cleanup below if the error returns.
Install the model-specific driver
- Go to HP’s official support site.
- Open Software and Drivers.
- Enter the exact printer model.
- Select the installed Windows version and architecture.
- Download the current driver or full printer solution offered for that model.
- Run the installer as instructed.
- Connect or add the printer when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Print a test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
Success means the printer appears normally, the test page prints, and the hpcabout.dll message does not return. If HP provides no package for the installed Windows version, use Windows’ built-in printer installation instead of forcing an old driver.
Fix 2: Use Windows Update or an in-box printer driver
Many printers work with a driver supplied through Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available printer or optional driver updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Follow the prompts to locate and install the printer.
- Print a test page.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the normal source for current printer drivers. A Windows in-box driver may restore printing even if it does not provide every HP-specific preference or status feature.
If basic printing works but advanced HP settings are absent, the missing UI extension may no longer be needed. Do not restore it merely to eliminate a warning unless the printer or a required feature actually fails.
Fix 3: Remove an orphaned HP driver
Use this path when the printer was uninstalled or replaced and the error appears during startup.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
control printers. - Press Enter.
- In the Devices and Printers window, select any printer.
- Select Print server properties from the toolbar.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the unused HP printer driver.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when available.
- Restart Windows.
If the driver is in use, stop the print spooler first:

Do not delete files manually from DriverStoreFileRepository. Windows manages that location, and manual replacement can damage driver installation state.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf the warning continues, inspect Task Manager > Startup apps and Task Scheduler for an entry clearly belonging to the removed HP package. Disable or remove it only after confirming that it is obsolete. Do not disable an unknown executable based solely on its use of the filename.
Fix 4: Check the file’s path, signature, and quarantine history
A legitimate HP driver component should be connected to an HP printer installation and located in a printer-driver directory. A copy in a random application folder deserves closer inspection.
- Right-click the file or the error’s reported path.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Review the Details tab.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Check whether the file was quarantined.
Restore or allow a quarantined file only when its path and signature match the official HP package you intend to use. If the file is unsigned, appears in an unrelated program directory, or triggers a malware detection, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
A file name associated with HP is not proof that a particular copy is safe.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit HP driver cannot simply be copied into a 64-bit driver directory, and a 64-bit file cannot replace a 32-bit component. Public records for this file contain inconsistent historical version, size, and architecture information, so there is no universal copy to use.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Review System type.
Install the architecture offered for that Windows installation and printer model. If Windows rejects the package, the driver may be too old, incorrectly targeted, or unsupported.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other DLLs also fail
hpcabout.dll normally belongs to an HP printer driver, so System File Checker may not restore it. These commands are useful when several unrelated Windows components are failing or Windows itself appears damaged.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. If both commands complete successfully but hpcabout.dll remains missing, return to the HP driver reinstall steps. SFC is not a substitute for reinstalling an HP printer package.
If manually tracking component corruption and repeating repair scans is becoming impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its repair features require the full version, and it is not required for an HP driver reinstall.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall drivers carefully
If the error began after a Windows update or driver change, check for a newer model-specific package before attempting a rollback.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers if the printer is connected by USB.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
For a complete reinstall:
- Right-click the printer in Device Manager.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm removal without deleting unrelated devices.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current HP package or add the printer through Windows Settings.
Driver utilities can reduce the work of checking multiple outdated packages, but they should not replace model verification. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers and identify updates; the full version performs the driver installation, while the official HP or Windows package remains the preferred source for this specific printer.

Do not run this as a generic repair:
regsvr32 hpcabout.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no authoritative evidence that hpcabout.dll is an ActiveX or COM server requiring registration.
A “cannot register” message usually means registration is inappropriate, the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit tool was used, or dependent driver files are missing. Reinstall the complete printer package instead.
Why isolated DLL downloads fail
Downloading hpcabout.dll from a random DLL site is unsafe and often ineffective. The copy may have the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, missing dependencies, altered contents, or malware. It also leaves the damaged HP installation, registry references, and driver-store state untouched.

When the printer is too old
Some legacy HP LaserJet drivers were designed for older Windows releases and may not have a supported package for Windows 10 or Windows 11. If HP lists no driver for your Windows version:
- Remove the failed legacy HP package.
- Try Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device.
- Allow Windows to search for an in-box driver.
- Test basic printing.
- If no compatible driver is found, check the printer’s supported operating systems and consider replacing the driver-dependent software or printer.
Do not force an old Vista-era driver into a modern driver store simply because its filename matches.
FAQ
Is hpcabout.dll a Windows system file?
No evidence establishes it as an independent Microsoft system component. It is associated with HP LaserJet printer-driver software.
Is hpcabout.dll malware?
The name alone cannot answer that. Verify the path, digital signature, printer association, and antivirus result. A copy in an unrelated application folder should not be trusted automatically.
Can I keep using the printer without it?
Possibly. A Windows in-box driver may support basic printing without HP’s older user-interface extension. Advanced preferences or status features may be unavailable.
Why did the error appear after uninstalling an HP printer?
The uninstall may have removed the file but left a startup entry, scheduled task, or driver reference. Remove the unused printer driver through Print server properties rather than downloading the DLL.
Should SFC restore hpcabout.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while this file is associated with an HP printer driver. Reinstall the matching HP or Windows printer driver.
What if reinstalling the driver does not work?
Remove every unused HP printer instance and driver, restart the print spooler and Windows, then install only the model-specific package or compatible in-box driver. If multiple unrelated DLL errors appear, investigate malware, storage problems, System Restore, or broader Windows repair.
