obs.dll is a real OBS Studio file, not a Windows system DLL. If Windows reports that obs.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the complete OBS Studio installation rather than downloading the DLL separately.
A normal 64-bit installation usually contains the file here:

Older, portable, custom, or third-party installations may use another folder. Do not copy obs.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a game directory, or another application’s folder.

Close OBS Studio and any launcher that starts it. If OBS still opens intermittently, back up your scenes, profiles, and settings:

The most important clue is the exact error wording:

A dialog naming obs.dll does not prove that the file itself is defective. Windows may be reporting a dependency or compatibility failure through the file that attempted to load it.
Fix 1: Check whether Windows Security removed obs.dll
Time needed: 3–5 minutes
Antivirus or endpoint security software can quarantine an OBS component. Check this before repeatedly reinstalling the program.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for OBS Studio,
obs.dll, or files inside the OBS installation folder. - Open a matching detection and note the file path and detection name.
If the installer came from the official OBS Studio download page, confirm that source before considering a restore. Microsoft explains how Protection history works in its Windows Security guidance.
Do not broadly disable antivirus protection. Do not restore a file merely because its name is obs.dll. If the source is uncertain, remove the installation and download OBS again from its official Windows installer.
After handling the detection, reinstall OBS using Fix 2. A reinstall is safer than restoring one DLL because it restores matching plugins, Qt files, FFmpeg files, and other dependencies together.
Fix 2: Reinstall OBS Studio from its official installer
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely solution when obs.dll is missing, damaged, or absent from the OBS folder.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for OBS Studio.
- If it appears, select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the Windows installer from the official OBS Studio website.
- Choose the installer that matches the affected computer’s Windows architecture.
- Run the installer and accept the default installation location unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Start OBS from the Start menu.
If your scenes and profiles are important, keep the %APPDATA%obs-studio backup until OBS starts normally and your settings are visible.
A normal 64-bit installation should place the core library beneath a path similar to:
C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs.dll
The exact installation directory can differ. To check it:
- Right-click the OBS shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Check Target and Start in.
- Confirm that both refer to the same OBS installation.
If OBS was installed in a custom folder, launch its executable directly from that installation rather than using an old shortcut. An incorrect shortcut working directory can make files appear to be missing even when they exist.

If a normal reinstall does not help, uninstall OBS, restart Windows, and install the current official package again. Do not copy a single DLL from another computer or from a different OBS release.
Fix 3: Update Windows for an entry-point error
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus restart time
Use this fix when the dialog says that IsWow64Process2 or IsWowProcess2 could not be found in the dynamic link library. This usually indicates that the installed OBS build expects a Windows API that the current Windows installation does not provide.
Replacing obs.dll cannot add a missing Windows API.

- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Repeat until no additional standard updates are offered.
- Start OBS again.

The current OBS download page provides Windows builds for Windows 10 and Windows 11. If the computer runs an older Windows release, use an OBS version compatible with that system from OBS’s official previous-release links. Do not use a newer DLL to force compatibility with an unsupported Windows version.
Fix 4: Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime when named
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Visual C++ Redistributables are relevant only when the error identifies Microsoft runtime files such as:
VCRUNTIME140.dll
MSVCP140.dll
Do not install a runtime merely because obs.dll appears in the message.
- Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Download the architecture required by the affected application.
- For a 64-bit OBS installation, start with the x64 package.
- If a separate 32-bit application or plugin reports the error, install the x86 package as well.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed, or Install if it is not.
- Restart Windows.
- Start OBS.
The x86 and x64 packages can coexist. Do not remove older runtime packages just to reduce the list of installed programs, because unrelated applications may depend on them.
Fix 5: Test without third-party plugins
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A plugin conflict can cause OBS to crash or fail during startup after an OBS update. This is different from a genuinely missing obs.dll, but the error may still mention the OBS core library.
- Close OBS.
- Open the OBS installation folder.
- Look for the plugin directories used by your installation.
- Temporarily move recently added or recently updated third-party plugin files to a backup folder outside OBS.
- Start OBS.
- If it opens, update each plugin from its original developer or leave incompatible plugins removed.
- Add plugins back one at a time, restarting OBS after each change.
OBS plugins must match the operating system architecture and OBS version. A 32-bit plugin cannot be substituted for a 64-bit plugin, and a plugin built for an older OBS release may stop working after an update.

If OBS opens without plugins, the application installation is probably intact. The next repair should target the plugin rather than obs.dll.
Fix 6: Update the graphics driver if OBS crashes
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Use this step when OBS starts but crashes during preview, recording, streaming, or scene changes. It is less relevant to a simple missing-file dialog.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Note the graphics adapter name.
- Right-click it and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install any offered driver and restart Windows.
For the most reliable result, obtain the driver from the graphics manufacturer’s official support page. If the problem began immediately after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if that option is available.
- Restart Windows and test OBS.
Manually identifying the correct graphics model and matching driver package can be tedious, especially on laptops with customized drivers. Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use Windows component repair when other Windows programs also report damaged system files or Windows behaves abnormally. These commands do not normally replace an OBS application DLL.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress pauses.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test OBS again.

as a routine repair. Microsoft’s Regsvr32 guidance describes registration for DLLs that expose the required registration functionality. Registering an ordinary OBS library does not rebuild the OBS installation.

The common causes, in practical order, are:
- OBS was incompletely installed or its files became corrupted.
- Windows Security quarantined an OBS component.
- Windows is too old for the installed OBS build.
- A 32-bit and 64-bit component was mixed incorrectly.
- A third-party plugin is incompatible.
- A Microsoft runtime dependency is missing.
- The shortcut points to the wrong installation or working directory.
- Windows components or a graphics driver are damaged.
A file existing on disk does not guarantee that it can load. Windows may reject it because a dependency is missing, an API is unavailable, or the file does not match the application architecture.

Is obs.dll part of Windows?
No. It belongs primarily to OBS Studio and related software that bundles OBS or its libobs core. It normally resides inside the OBS installation directory.

No. Install or repair the complete OBS Studio package. The installer supplies the matching core library, plugins, runtime files, and dependencies.
Can I copy obs.dll into System32?
No. That can create version conflicts and does not repair OBS. Keep the file inside the application’s installation directory.
Does obs.dll work with both 32-bit and 64-bit OBS?
The architecture must match. Do not substitute a 32-bit library for a 64-bit OBS installation or the reverse. The installation path and executable should identify which build is being used.
Why does Windows mention obs.dll when the error names IsWow64Process2?
That is an entry-point compatibility error. The installed OBS build is requesting a Windows API that the current Windows version lacks. Update Windows instead of replacing obs.dll.
