hpdigwia.dll is associated with the older Still Image and Windows Image Acquisition, or WIA, stack used by scanners and digital cameras. Microsoft describes WIA as the Windows imaging architecture for these devices, with older software commonly targeting WIA 1.0 on Windows XP-era systems and later software using WIA 2.0.
The hp prefix does not prove that the file is an HP printer application file. It is also not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or general-purpose redistributable.

Public file records commonly associate this filename with older 32-bit Windows imaging software, especially Windows XP-era installations. That does not mean every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer should contain it. On a modern PC, first identify the application reporting the error and the path from which it is trying to load the file.
Common messages include:

“Specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency is missing. The named DLL may exist while another file required by it does not.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
If only one scanner, camera, photo utility, or legacy imaging program reports the error, repair that program first.

- Write down the full name of the application shown in the error.
- Close the application.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again and test the scanner or camera.
If there is no Repair button, or the repair does not help:
- Return to Installed apps.
- Uninstall the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer or device manufacturer’s official support page.
- Install the correct release for your Windows version and system architecture.
- Restart again before testing the application.
For an older application, run its installer by right-clicking it and choosing Run as administrator. If the application still does not start, right-click its shortcut, select Properties > Compatibility, and test compatibility settings appropriate to the program’s original Windows release.
Reinstalling the program remains the definitive fix when hpdigwia.dll was supplied by that program or its imaging driver package.
Fix 2: Reinstall the scanner or camera driver
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A partial driver removal can leave the application looking for an imaging component that is no longer available.

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Locate the affected device.
- Right-click it and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are intentionally removing the old driver package.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the exact driver supplied for your device and Windows edition.
- Reconnect the device when the installer requests it, or after installation completes.
- Open the imaging application and test scanning or image capture.
If the device is not listed, select Action > Scan for hardware changes in Device Manager. Also check Other devices for an entry with a warning icon.
Manually hunting through old driver packages can mean guessing between several architectures and release branches. Fix 3: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates
A Windows servicing problem or incomplete update can affect protected imaging components.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the affected application again.
Do not assume that a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain the exact XP-era hpdigwia.dll. Updates may repair the Windows imaging subsystem without restoring that filename. The application may instead require an updated driver or a newer version of its own software.
Fix 4: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
Use this fix when multiple programs report missing system files, the error began after cleanup or repair work, or the affected file should belong to Windows rather than only to an application.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files and replaces missing or corrupted copies.
Repeating these commands without knowing whether the component store or protected files changed can make troubleshooting tedious. If DISM reports that repair files cannot be found
Use a matching Windows repair source only if you have legitimate installation media or a known-good Windows source.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual source path. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. Using an unrelated source can create additional servicing errors.
Run SFC again after DISM completes:
sfc /scannow
If both tools report that they cannot repair Windows, preserve your files and investigate Windows recovery or an in-place repair rather than copying an arbitrary DLL.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may have quarantined a file after a program update or incomplete installation.

- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand an entry related to the affected application or file.
- Check the original file path and detection details.
Do not restore a file merely because its name is hpdigwia.dll. Restore it only when the original path, digital signature, and surrounding installation establish that it is authentic. If Defender detects it again after restoration, do not repeatedly allow it. Repair Windows or reinstall the application from its official installer instead.
A file in an application directory is not automatically the same component as a Windows copy in %SystemRoot%System32. The path matters.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use System Restore when the error started immediately after a driver installation, update, cleanup tool, or system change.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select an appropriate restore point.
- Choose Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Complete the restore and restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can roll back drivers, applications, and system settings. If the error remains, reinstall the application and its device driver rather than restoring the same point repeatedly.

Do not register or manually copy this DLL
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It works with DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A Windows imaging DLL may not support that interface.
Running this command:
regsvr32 hpdigwia.dll
can produce an error such as DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That usually means registration is inappropriate. It does not mean you need a different download.
Do not copy a 32-bit XP-era file into System32 or SysWOW64 on a modern 64-bit installation. That can create a version mismatch, architecture mismatch, unresolved dependency, or security risk. A 32-bit application may need a 32-bit imaging component, but the correct repair is to install its compatible application and driver package.
Advanced checks when the error remains
If the normal fixes fail, collect the information that identifies the real repair target.
Confirm the calling program
Read the complete error dialog and note the executable name. Check the application’s own log folder or Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Record the faulting application, faulting module, and file path.
If the same application fails every time but other programs work, focus on that application and its driver.
Check the file path and architecture
Search for hpdigwia.dll only to identify where copies exist. Do not replace every copy you find. An application-directory copy may belong to an old installation, while a Windows-directory copy may be protected by servicing.

A legacy 32-bit program may also be unable to load a 64-bit dependency. Conversely, placing a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit program’s directory will not solve the problem.

Check optional Windows components carefully
Open Start > Turn Windows features on or off and review only features required by the affected application. Do not enable random legacy components as a substitute for reinstalling the program. The presence of an imaging error does not by itself prove that a particular optional Windows feature is missing.

Windows XP and modern Windows qualification
The strongest public evidence for this filename concerns Windows XP-era imaging software and older WIA 1.0 applications. If you are running Windows XP in a supported isolated environment or maintaining an old virtual machine, use matching installation media and the original application installer. Do not borrow the file from a different Windows release.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, do not assume that this exact filename should be present. The error may come from an old application that expects a legacy component, an incomplete scanner installation, or a missing dependency. Repair the calling program and driver first.
