The 60-second answer
hpf3rw73.dll is an HP printer-driver component named HP PCL 3 Render, published by Hewlett-Packard Corporation. It is not a Microsoft Windows component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET library, or general-purpose system DLL.

What hpf3rw73.dll does
The name hpf3rw73.dll identifies a printer-rendering library. Its embedded description is HP PCL 3 Render.
PCL3 is an HP print-driver technology that converts document data into commands a compatible printer can process. When an application, print spooler, or HP utility tries to print, the driver may load this rendering component. If the file is missing, damaged, blocked, or unable to load one of its dependencies, Windows reports a DLL error.

Why the error appears
The cause is usually a damaged or incomplete HP printer installation. Typical triggers include:
- A printer-driver update stopped partway through.
- A cleanup tool removed part of the old HP package.
- Windows retained a printer queue that points to an obsolete driver.
- The driver does not match the process or operating-system architecture.
- Windows Security quarantined the file.
- A dependency required by the DLL is missing.
- A recent Windows or driver change damaged the driver store.
- The printer package is too old for the current Windows version.
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may have found hpf3rw73.dll but failed to load a dependency required by it.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete HP printer driver
This is the primary fix. Reinstalling only the DLL leaves the driver’s .inf installation instructions, catalog, dependencies, permissions, and architecture handling unresolved.
Step 1: Identify the affected HP printer
Check the error context first:
- Look at the name of the application showing the error.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Review installed HP printers.
- Check Control Panel > View devices and printers for older queues.
- If several HP printers are installed, note each model before removing anything.
If the error appears during printing, the affected queue is usually the one selected in the application. If it appears when Windows starts, inspect recently installed HP utilities and printer software.
Step 2: Confirm your Windows architecture
To check the operating-system type:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Look at System type under device specifications.
A 64-bit version of Windows does not mean every driver file is interchangeable. The relevant architecture is the process and driver package requiring the file. Do not substitute an x64 DLL for an x86 driver or the reverse.
An older 32-bit application may use a 32-bit component, while a printer driver package may have its own architecture requirements. Select the driver offered for the exact printer model and Windows version rather than choosing a file by size or filename.
Step 3: Download the model-specific package
Go to HP’s official Support site and search for the exact printer model. Select your Windows version and download the recommended printer-driver package.
Prefer the complete driver or model-specific package when it is available. A generic Microsoft printer driver may restore basic printing, but it can omit HP-specific features, print-quality controls, scanning integration, or model-specific options.

Do not search for hpf3rw73.dll as a standalone download. The correct official source is the complete HP driver package for the printer.
Step 4: Remove the broken printer only if necessary
If the existing queue is clearly damaged:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
If removing the queue does not remove the old driver, use the classic print-server interface:
- Press
Windows key + R. - Enter
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the old HP driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select the option to remove the driver and driver package when Windows offers it.
- Restart Windows.
Only remove a driver when you have identified the affected printer and have the replacement package ready. Removing a shared driver can affect other queues using the same package.
Step 5: Install the package
Run the HP installer and follow its prompts. If the download is an extracted driver package rather than a normal setup program, install it through the printer wizard:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select View devices and printers.
- Select Add a printer.
- Choose The printer that I want isn’t listed.
- Select Add a printer using an IP address or hostname if that matches your setup.
- Continue until Windows offers the driver selection.
- Select Install a new driver.
- Choose Have Disk.
- Browse to the extracted HP driver folder.
- Select the package’s
.inffile. - Complete the installation.
Use the .inf file supplied with the HP package. Do not point the wizard directly at a loose DLL.
How to tell whether this worked
Restart Windows and test from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. Print a test page or print a small document from the application that showed the error.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe repair succeeded if:
- The application opens without the DLL message.
- The print job leaves the queue normally.
- The printer produces the expected output.
- The HP utility opens without reporting a missing component.
If the error returns immediately, continue with the architecture and dependency checks below instead of copying another DLL.
If manually hunting through HP driver releases and identifying which installed drivers are stale is taking longer than expected, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the issue, while repair or driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the exact HP package for the affected printer remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 2: Check for a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
A mismatched driver can produce a missing, invalid, or unloadable DLL message even when a file with the right name exists.
Check all of these:
- The Windows architecture shown in Settings > System > About
- The exact HP printer model
- The operating system selected on HP’s driver page
- Whether the printer is using an old driver retained from another Windows installation
- Whether the failing application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the installed driver appears under the correct printer queue
Do not rename files or replace an x86 file with an x64 file. Do not assume that a larger file is newer or more suitable.

You can inspect the installed printer driver without modifying it:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select View devices and printers.
- Right-click the HP printer.
- Select Printer properties.
- Open the Advanced tab.
- Note the driver name.
- Compare it with the package intended for your printer model.
If the driver name is generic, missing, or associated with a different HP model, remove the incorrect queue and reinstall the model-specific package.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may have removed or blocked a printer-driver file. A quarantine event does not prove that hpf3rw73.dll is malware, but it does require verification before restoring anything.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the detection associated with
hpf3rw73.dll. - Open the event details.
- Review the file path, detection name, publisher information, and associated HP package.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the HP printer-driver installation.
- If the file is confirmed as an authentic HP component, use the available restore or allow action only if appropriate for your security policy.
- Reinstall the complete HP package afterward if the driver is incomplete.
- Run another scan.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. Do not restore a file merely because its filename matches the missing DLL. If the publisher, path, or package origin cannot be confirmed, leave it quarantined and obtain a clean driver package from HP.

Fix 4: Install Windows updates and repair Windows components
Windows Update can repair operating-system components involved in driver installation, printing, and device detection. It will not necessarily restore a third-party HP driver DLL, so use this step alongside, not instead of, reinstalling the HP package.
Install pending updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Check for updates again after the restart.
Windows 10 reached the end of free support on October 14, 2025, so the available update and driver experience depends on the Windows release and support status of the machine. Legacy HP packages should be evaluated against the specific Windows version and printer model.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window while it is processing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRun System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when the scan finishes.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC when repairing corrupted Windows components. These commands can repair Windows component-store problems, but SFC is not a guaranteed repair for a third-party HP printer-driver file.
If you want an easier way to identify damaged Windows components while working through repeated manual scans, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the correct HP driver remains necessary when the missing file belongs to that package.
What the result means
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them: restart and test printing.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but could not repair some: repeat the HP driver installation and investigate Windows servicing problems.
- No integrity violations were found: the missing file is more likely an HP driver, architecture, quarantine, or dependency issue.
- DISM fails: record the displayed error, complete Windows Update, restart, and run DISM again before relying on SFC.
Fix 5: Check the printer in Device Manager
Device Manager can reveal whether Windows sees a driver problem, although it may not name hpf3rw73.dll directly.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues.
- Expand Printers if that category is present.
- Look for the affected HP model or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Review the General tab for a device status message.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver if a suitable package is already available.
- If updating does not help, uninstall the device only after downloading the correct HP package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the HP package again.
Do not use Device Manager to replace a printer DLL with an arbitrary file. Its role here is to identify the device and driver state, then allow a clean package installation.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
If printing worked until a specific HP update, cleanup operation, or Windows change, System Restore may return the driver environment to an earlier state.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that may be changed.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the process.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove recently installed drivers or applications. Afterward, install the correct HP package rather than allowing the same damaged installer to recreate the problem.
Why regsvr32 hpf3rw73.dll usually does not help
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL repair command.
A printer-rendering component normally belongs to a driver package and is installed through its .inf file, catalog, dependencies, and printer-driver configuration. Running:
regsvr32 hpf3rw73.dll
may produce “The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found,” or another error. It does not make the printer driver valid.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically documents registration for that exact DLL. HP printer-driver repair should use the complete HP package instead.

Why downloading the DLL separately is unsafe
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong HP build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file intended for a different printer package
- A file with missing dependencies
- A DLL that does not match the installed
.infand catalog
Copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder can also create version conflicts and leaves the printer installation incomplete.
Use the official HP Support page for the exact printer model. If Windows itself is damaged, use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or System Restore through Microsoft’s supported recovery procedures.
If the error returns after reinstalling
A recurring error usually means the underlying cause was not removed. Check the following in order:
- Confirm that the same HP printer model is selected in the application.
- Remove duplicate or obsolete HP printer queues.
- Check whether the driver package matches Windows and the required architecture.
- Review Windows Security Protection history again.
- Check whether the error names a missing dependency rather than a missing
hpf3rw73.dll. - Install pending Windows updates.
- Run DISM followed by SFC.
- Check Device Manager for a warning icon or failed driver.
- Test with a temporary Microsoft inbox or class driver if basic printing is more important than HP-specific features.
- If the Microsoft driver works, the HP package or its model-specific features remain the likely source of the failure.
- If the printer is old, check HP’s current support information for that model and Windows version.
- Use System Restore if the problem began immediately after a known driver change.
A Microsoft inbox driver may restore basic printing but can remove advanced HP options, print-quality controls, or model-specific functions.
FAQ
Is hpf3rw73.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an HP printer-driver component described as HP PCL 3 Render. It is associated with Hewlett-Packard printer software, not with Windows itself.
Should I copy hpf3rw73.dll into System32?
No. Install the complete HP driver package for the printer model. Copying a loose DLL can create an architecture mismatch and does not install the driver’s configuration, catalog, dependencies, or permissions.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is the known version 0.3.7071.0 the only correct version?
No. That is one catalogued 32-bit build, approximately 1.45 MB. Public records also list separate x64 builds and other package details. Select the version supplied for the exact printer and Windows installation.
Do I need to register hpf3rw73.dll?
Usually not. regsvr32 is appropriate only for DLLs that support the registration entry point documented by the software vendor. Reinstalling the HP printer driver is the correct repair path.
Can SFC restore this file?
SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It may not restore a third-party HP driver component. Run DISM and SFC when Windows component corruption is suspected, but reinstall the HP package when the HP driver is missing.
What if Windows Security quarantined it?
Review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Verify the path, publisher, and HP package origin before considering restoration. If authenticity cannot be confirmed, do not restore the file. Reinstall the driver from HP instead.

How do I find which printer installed it?
Review installed printers under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, inspect older queues in Control Panel > View devices and printers, and check recently installed HP utilities. The filename alone does not establish an exact printer model.
Can I keep using a Microsoft printer driver?
Possibly. Windows may provide an inbox or class driver for basic printing, but HP-specific features and model-specific options may be unavailable. Use it as a diagnostic or compatibility choice, not as a replacement for the correct HP package when full functionality is required.
