“The program can’t start because nrapi20.dll is missing from your computer.”
nrapi20.dll is a Backburner application file, not a Windows system DLL. It is associated with Maxnet, a legacy Autodesk network-rendering component originally developed by Discreet, a division of Autodesk, Inc.

- The error appeared after uninstalling, updating, or reinstalling 3ds Max or another Autodesk product: repair or reinstall the matching Backburner component.
- Windows Security recently detected or quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- Backburner opens but cannot connect to 3ds Max or a render node: check
nrapi.conf, thePlugPathentry, and version compatibility. - The application is an older 32-bit Autodesk program running on 64-bit Windows: confirm that the 32-bit Backburner files are installed in the application directory.
- The message says “specified module could not be found,” but the DLL is present: a dependency of
nrapi20.dllmay be missing. - Several unrelated Windows programs also fail: run DISM and System File Checker as secondary Windows repairs.
- You are considering
regsvr32: do not use it for this file unless documentation for the exact Autodesk product specifically requires registration. - The error started after a driver or hardware change: update the relevant driver, but treat that as a secondary check because drivers do not normally install
nrapi20.dll.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Backburner and its owning Autodesk product
This is the most likely solution. nrapi20.dll belongs to Backburner, and current Autodesk network-rendering installations place the required files in the Backburner installation directory used by the Autodesk application.
The affected product may be 3ds Max, Backburner itself, or another Autodesk product that uses network rendering. The filename alone cannot identify the exact installer, so first determine which application shows the error.
Identify the application that is failing
- Write down the application name shown in the error window.
- Right-click the application shortcut and select Properties.
- Select the Shortcut tab.
- Check the Target field.
- Note the program folder shown in the path.
- Open File Explorer and inspect the application directory.
- Look for a folder named
Backburner, or files such as: nrapi.confmanager.exeserver.exe- a
Networkdirectory
A historical Backburner installation may be under one of these locations:

Repair the application
If the Autodesk installer provides a repair option:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the Autodesk product or Backburner entry.
- Choose Change, Modify, or Repair, depending on what the installer displays.
- Complete the repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the original application again.
If there is no repair option, use the original Autodesk installer for the same product generation:
- Close 3ds Max, Backburner Manager, Backburner Server, and related Autodesk programs.
- Uninstall the damaged Backburner component from Apps > Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- If you have multiple old Backburner Manager installations, remove obsolete copies before reinstalling. Mixed Manager installations can prevent the render network from working correctly.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the matching Autodesk installer as an administrator.
- Install Backburner and the network-rendering components used by the Autodesk application.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application locally before testing network rendering.
The repair worked if the application starts without the nrapi20.dll message and the Backburner directory contains the expected configuration and executable files. If the same message returns immediately, the installer may not match the Autodesk product, the file may be quarantined again, or a dependency may be missing.
Do not install a newer Backburner release merely because it is available. The submitting workstation, 3ds Max installation, Manager, and render servers must use compatible versions.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update, file change, or false detection. Check the security history before copying anything manually.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry mentioning
nrapi20.dll, Backburner, 3ds Max, or the Autodesk installation folder. - Open the detection details.
- Confirm that the detected path belongs to the expected Autodesk installation.
- If the file is confirmed clean and the detection is a false positive, choose Restore or Allow on device, if those actions are available.
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall Backburner immediately afterward.
Restoring a quarantined file is not a substitute for repairing the application. A partial installation may contain other missing or altered files. Microsoft’s quarantine guidance recommends investigating the detection before restoring it. You can review the official process in Microsoft’s quarantine restoration guidance.
If Windows Security quarantines the file again, stop restoring it repeatedly. Update the security definitions, submit the file for analysis through your organization’s normal security process, and reinstall Backburner from the official Autodesk installer.

Avoid broad antivirus exclusions. If an exclusion is necessary in a controlled environment, limit it to the verified Autodesk installation directory or the specific Backburner executable that requires access.
Fix 3: Confirm the 32-bit and 64-bit arrangement
Reported file metadata identifies nrapi20.dll as a Win32 DLL. Backburner is legacy 32-bit technology, so a 32-bit Autodesk component may need this file even when Windows 10 or Windows 11 is 64-bit.
That arrangement is normal. Do not move the DLL into a Windows system directory to make the architectures match.
Check the installation as follows:
- Right-click the failing program.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Do not enable compatibility settings at random. Record whether the application is an older 32-bit program.
- Open the application’s installation directory.
- Check whether Backburner is installed beside the Autodesk application or under the Autodesk program directory.
- Confirm that the application and Backburner came from compatible installers.
- Repair the matching installation if the Backburner folder is missing or incomplete.
A 64-bit version of Windows does not automatically provide a missing 32-bit application DLL. Conversely, copying a 32-bit DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 does not correctly install Backburner.

If the installer completes but the program still fails, check whether that Autodesk release supports the Windows version you are using. Running an old product in a supported older environment may be necessary for a production render workflow.
Fix 4: Check whether a dependency is missing
Windows may display “The specified module could not be found” even when nrapi20.dll exists. In some cases, the missing item is a dependency required by the named DLL.
Check the file directly:
- Open the Backburner directory.
- Confirm whether
nrapi20.dllis present. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Compare its location and product information with the rest of the Backburner files.
- Do not replace it with a file from another installation unless both installations are the same Autodesk product generation and architecture.
- Run the official Autodesk repair rather than adding individual runtime files at random.
If the DLL is present but the program still reports it as missing, reinstall the complete Backburner component. A complete repair is safer than guessing which runtime or secondary DLL is absent.
Do not assume that reinstalling a Visual C++ package will restore nrapi20.dll. No authoritative Microsoft redistributable package is established as the source of this product-specific file.
Fix 5: Check nrapi.conf and Backburner network-rendering files
If the application launches but network rendering fails, the problem may be configuration rather than a missing DLL.
Look for nrapi.conf in the Backburner directory and inspect it carefully:
- Close 3ds Max and all Backburner services.
- Open the Backburner installation folder.
- Make a backup copy of
nrapi.conf. - Open the original file in Notepad as an administrator if Windows prevents saving.
- Check the
PlugPathentry. - Confirm that it points to the correct Autodesk and Backburner plug-in location.
- Remove references to uninstalled product versions.
- Save the file.
- Restart Backburner Manager and Server.
- Test a local render before submitting a network job.
An incorrect PlugPath can produce an error such as:

Error creating 3ds Max plugin instance for Backburner.
The correct path depends on the installed Autodesk version, so do not copy a path from another computer unless its product version, installation location, and architecture match.
Also verify that the Backburner installation contains the expected Network directory and the Manager and Server executables. If these files are missing, reinstalling the complete component is more reliable than rebuilding the folder manually.
Check the following when only render nodes fail:
- The Manager and Server versions match the submitting application.
- The render node points to the intended Manager.
- Firewall rules allow the Backburner executables.
- Antivirus has not removed
manager.exe,server.exe, or their service variants. - The node is not using a mixed installation left behind by an older Autodesk version.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the symptoms point to hardware
A display, network, or storage driver can cause a separate Autodesk startup or rendering problem, but it is not normally the owner of nrapi20.dll. Check drivers only if the failure began after a hardware change, Windows upgrade, graphics crash, or network adapter problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Network adapters, and any category related to the reported hardware.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider and driver date.
- Use Update driver or install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Backburner again.
Do not remove a working graphics or network driver solely because nrapi20.dll is missing. Repair Backburner first when the error names this file directly.
Manually checking each device, matching hardware IDs, and determining which driver changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling Backburner remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only as a secondary check
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate an application DLL that belonged to Backburner.
Use them when other Windows programs are also failing, Windows updates are damaged, or system files show broader corruption.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the Autodesk application.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Backburner. If it reports that it could not fix some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If the nrapi20.dll message remains while unrelated Windows programs work normally, return to the Backburner installer rather than repeating system repairs.
For readers who want help identifying which Windows components are damaged instead of repeatedly rerunning commands, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing detected issues; repairs are performed by the full version. It is not a replacement for reinstalling Backburner when the missing file belongs to Autodesk software.
Microsoft documents DISM and SFC usage in its Windows component repair guidance.

regsvr32 nrapi20.dll
regsvr32 calls a DLL registration entry point, such as DllRegisterServer. It is intended for self-registering components, including certain COM libraries and controls. There is no established Autodesk instruction requiring this Backburner DLL to be registered.
If you already ran it and received an error such as “The module was loaded but the entry point was not found,” that does not prove the file is damaged. It may simply mean the DLL is not a self-registering component.
Do not download or copy an isolated DLL
Random DLL downloads are risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different product release, use the wrong architecture, or omit dependencies. Even a clean file can leave the Backburner installation mismatched and cause another startup or rendering failure.
Do not copy nrapi20.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Manual copying is appropriate only in a controlled recovery situation, such as copying a verified file from an identical intact Autodesk installation into the same application directory. Follow that action with a proper repair or reinstall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe safe sources are the original Autodesk installer, the Autodesk product’s supported distribution channel, and a verified installation image maintained by your organization.
Prevention after the repair
Once Backburner works again:
- Keep the installer for the exact Autodesk product version.
- Record the Backburner installation path.
- Keep Manager, Server, 3ds Max, and render nodes on compatible versions.
- Check antivirus Protection history after Autodesk updates.
- Use narrow exclusions only when they are justified.
- Back up
nrapi.confbefore changing network-rendering settings. - Avoid deleting old Autodesk folders manually.
- Test a local render before sending work to the network.
- Keep legacy Autodesk software on a Windows release supported by that product when possible.
- Document the Manager and Server configuration for each render node.
FAQ
Is nrapi20.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a Backburner application DLL associated with Autodesk network rendering. It should not normally be installed in a Windows system directory.
Which Autodesk product installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the precise product. It is associated with Backburner, which may have been installed with 3ds Max or another Autodesk product that uses network rendering.
Is nrapi20.dll 32-bit?
Reported file metadata identifies it as Win32, and Backburner is legacy 32-bit technology. A 32-bit Backburner component can be required on 64-bit Windows.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does Windows say the DLL is missing when it is visible?
The message can refer to a dependency required by nrapi20.dll, not necessarily the named file itself. Repair the complete Backburner installation instead of copying another DLL.
Should I run SFC or DISM?
Only as secondary checks, especially if unrelated Windows programs also fail. These commands are not expected to recreate a missing Backburner file.
Should I register the file with regsvr32?
No, not unless Autodesk documentation for the exact product explicitly requires it. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command.
What if reinstalling Backburner does not help?
Check antivirus quarantine, product and render-node version matching, nrapi.conf, installer logs, Windows Event Viewer, disk health, permissions, and whether the legacy Autodesk release is supported on your Windows version.
