hpf4400t.dll is an HP printer-driver and user-interface component, not a general Windows DLL or a Visual C++ runtime. Public driver-package records place it in the prnhp005.inf HP printer package, including files for HP Photosmart C4400-family printers.

The safest repair is to remove the damaged HP printer installation, restart Windows, and install the full driver package for your exact HP printer model from HP’s official support site. Do not download the DLL by itself or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32.
If you no longer use the printer and the message appears during startup, remove the orphaned HP software and startup entry instead of replacing the file.

What hpf4400t.dll belongs to
The file is associated with an HP printer-driver architecture sometimes described in file metadata as “VAYU UI.” A documented package path places the 32-bit file under a driver store location similar to:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository
prnhp005.inf_x86_neutral_...I386hpf4400t.dll
The I386 directory and public metadata identify this as a 32-bit component. Reported metadata lists Hewlett-Packard as the publisher, “VAYU UI Application” as the description, version 0.3.3790.1830, and a size of approximately 1.59 MB. Treat those values as observed legacy metadata, not as a guarantee about every copy or a current HP installer.
The strongest known package association is prnhp005.inf, which includes HP Photosmart C4400-related driver files. That does not mean every HP printer uses this DLL. Other HP models may use different packages and similarly named files.
To identify the affected printer:
- Check the model label on the printer.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- On older Windows interfaces, open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Note the exact model name before downloading a driver.
Why the error appears
The message normally means that software is trying to load an HP printer component that is absent, damaged, incompatible, or separated from the rest of its driver package.
Likely causes include:
- An incomplete HP printer installation.
- A partial uninstall that left a startup entry or driver reference behind.
- A Windows upgrade or update that affected an older printer package.
- Disk cleanup or driver-store corruption.
- Antivirus quarantine of a legitimate HP driver file.
- A 32-bit and 64-bit driver mismatch.
- A missing dependency of
hpf4400t.dll, even when the named file exists. - A very old printer whose original package is no longer supplied for the current Windows release.
The phrase “specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is missing. Windows may be unable to find a library that hpf4400t.dll needs.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the exact HP driver
This is the primary repair for a missing or damaged hpf4400t.dll.
Remove the HP software
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if it is connected.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the HP printer software, HP Photosmart software, or a similarly named HP package.
- Select it, choose Uninstall, and complete the removal.
- If the software is not listed, open Control Panel > Programs and Features and look there instead.
Remove the printer
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Choose Remove or Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
- If it remains listed in Control Panel, open Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click it, and choose Remove device.
Restart Windows before reinstalling. This clears active driver processes and gives Windows a chance to rebuild its device state.

Install the replacement package
- Open HP’s official support site.
- Search for the exact printer model, not just “Photosmart” or “HP printer.”
- Open the printer’s driver and software page.
- Select the installed Windows version and available architecture.
- Download the full-feature driver or software package when HP provides one.
- Run the installer and follow its connection instructions.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it, unless its instructions say otherwise.
- Print a test page and, if applicable, test scanning.
A successful repair usually removes the startup error, restores the printer queue, and allows printing without manually placing a DLL in a Windows folder. HP may no longer provide a current Windows 11 package for an old printer. In that case, use the Windows printer installation path described below.
Fix 2: Use Windows Update or the built-in printer driver
If HP does not offer a compatible package, Windows may have a usable driver with reduced functionality.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to search.
- If the printer is not found, choose the option to add it manually.
- Select the connection type and follow the on-screen choices.
- Allow Windows Update to search for a driver when that option is offered.
Microsoft recommends obtaining printer drivers through Windows Update or the printer manufacturer. A built-in driver may restore printing but omit HP-specific scanning, maintenance, or status features.
If you have a genuine HP driver package containing an INF file, an administrator can add it to the driver store:

Replace the path with the real location of the matching package. Do not use this command with an isolated DLL or an INF downloaded from an untrusted source.

Fix 3: Check architecture and compatibility
A public package record places hpf4400t.dll in a 32-bit I386 directory. To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
A 32-bit DLL cannot satisfy a 64-bit application that specifically requires a 64-bit module. However, 32-bit printer software can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows compatibility layers, so seeing a 32-bit HP component is not automatically a problem.

The important match is between the printer model, Windows release, and driver package. Do not substitute a similarly named HP file from another printer family.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a printer component. This is not proof that the file is safe or malicious.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning the HP package or
hpf4400t.dll. - If the file was detected, leave it quarantined until you verify the source.
The safest response is to download a fresh driver package from HP and reinstall it. Restore a quarantined file only when it is inside a legitimate, verified HP package and Windows Security identifies it as a false positive. If Windows reports that the file is infected, do not manually restore it merely to remove the error.
Fix 5: Inspect stale driver entries
A partial uninstall may leave an HP package in the driver store.

Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers
Review the output for HP packages and record the matching Published Name, which normally resembles oem42.inf. Do not delete a package based only on the presence of “HP” in its description. Confirm that it belongs to the affected printer and that the printer is no longer needed by another user or application.
Driver removal is an advanced step. If you have confirmed the package identity, Microsoft’s PnPUtil documentation provides the supported removal syntax. Reinstall the correct HP package afterward.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows component corruption
Use this step when other Windows features or protected system files are also failing. It is not a replacement for reinstalling a third-party HP driver.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands complete. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the printer again. If both commands report no integrity violations and the error remains, return to the HP driver reinstall rather than repeating the scans indefinitely.

Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL download sites sites may provide the wrong build, wrong architecture, an incomplete dependency set, or a modified file. Even a clean copy may not match the HP package installed on your computer and will not repair missing printer services, INF registration, or associated files.
Use HP’s official model-specific support page or Windows Update instead.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Copying hpf4400t.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder can create version conflicts and hide the real driver problem. The correct location is determined by the HP package and Windows driver store.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair
regsvr32 is intended for registering COM and ActiveX DLLs that expose DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver UI module is not automatically a self-registering COM component.
Running this command is therefore usually inappropriate:
regsvr32 hpf4400t.dll
Use it only if HP’s specific documentation says that the exact file supports registration. A failed registration does not repair a missing printer package.

If the error appears after removing the printer
If you no longer own or use the HP printer:
- Uninstall the HP software from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- Remove the printer from Printers & scanners and Devices and Printers.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps for an orphaned HP entry.
- Disable the entry only when you recognize it as belonging to the removed printer.
- Restart Windows.
Do not reinstall an obsolete driver simply to silence a startup reference unless you still need the printer.

Is hpf4400t.dll a Windows system file?
No. Available package evidence places it in an HP printer-driver package rather than as a general Windows component.
Which printers use it?
The documented prnhp005.inf package includes HP Photosmart C4400-related files. Other models may use the package, but there is no basis for claiming that every HP printer uses hpf4400t.dll.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not as the primary fix. This file is identified with an HP printer driver, not as a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Rebuild the HP installation first.
