Then open Command Prompt and run:
where hpfvew73.dll
If Windows finds a copy, record its full path. A path under an HP program directory or a Windows DriverStore package is more consistent with legitimate printer software than a copy in Downloads, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory.
To check the file signature, right-click the DLL, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signature, and choose Details. A valid HP signature supports the file’s legitimacy, but an absent signature alone does not prove malware. A DLL found outside any HP installation should be treated cautiously.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact HP printer package

- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer is not listed, continue anyway. A stale driver package can remain after the visible printer has been removed.
Remove an obsolete HP driver package
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
printui.exe /s /t2
- Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the old HP driver package if you are certain it belongs to the removed printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that choice.
- Restart the computer.
Do not remove a driver that belongs to another working HP printer. If Windows refuses to remove the package, leave it in place and proceed with the current HP installer, or remove it after stopping the Print Spooler.
Install the current compatible HP software
Use HP’s official printer support portal and search by the printer’s product name, product number, or serial number. Select the package intended for your Windows version and architecture.
Prefer the full-feature driver and software package when available. HP may also provide a basic driver, firmware, or a built-in Windows driver. A basic or built-in driver may print successfully but may not restore an old HP utility that expects hpfvew73.dll.

Success means the original error no longer appears and the printer completes a test print. If the printer works but an obsolete HP utility still reports the DLL error, uninstall that utility rather than forcing an old component back into Windows.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Microsoft Defender may have quarantined the DLL during cleanup or after an update.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections for

- Run DISM first:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run the HP installer again.
DISM repairs the Windows component source used by SFC. SFC then checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies. These commands do not normally recreate a missing third-party HP DLL, so a clean SFC result does not rule out a damaged HP installation.

Fix 4: Check architecture and legacy-driver compatibility
Public records commonly identify hpfvew73.dll as 32-bit, while another record describes a copy in an AMD64 DriverStore package. Those records conflict, so do not use their version or size as a reason to copy a file manually.
A 32-bit DLL must be loaded by the compatible 32-bit driver or application. It cannot be made compatible by placing it in a 64-bit program directory.

To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Look at System type.
For the affected process:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform if available.
Install the driver selected for the exact printer model and Windows architecture. Do not choose an arbitrary x86 or x64 package based only on the DLL’s reported size.
If the printer is from an older generation, the original HP utility may no longer be fully compatible with current Windows. A modern HP package, a built-in Windows driver, or a basic driver may restore printing without restoring every legacy utility feature.
Fix 5: Rebuild the printer connection
A stale connection can keep Windows calling an old HP package.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove every duplicate entry for the affected printer.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting it.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Remove only entries clearly belonging to the disconnected HP printer.
- Right-click the category and select Scan for hardware changes.
- Run the HP installer again.
If the error appears when printing, restart the spooler before retrying:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
Do not delete files from C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository manually. DriverStore packages are managed by Windows and tied to signed INF files.

What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites may provide malware, the wrong architecture, an altered file, or a version that does not match the HP INF package. Even a genuine copy may fail because the real problem is a missing dependency, damaged printer package, or stale driver registration.
The safe source is the official HP printer driver portal for the exact model. Windows Update or a built-in driver can also be appropriate when the printer is supported, but generic Windows updates are not confirmed to contain this exact DLL.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Copying hpfvew73.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory does not install the printer driver. It can also create mismatched files and obscure the original failure.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A printer rendering or filter component may not provide that entry point. Running:
regsvr32 hpfvew73.dll
can produce an entry-point error and does not install the HP driver. Use the HP installer instead.
Do not install random runtimes
hpfvew73.dll is not established as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. Installing unrelated redistributables is unlikely to repair the primary problem.
If the error remains
Capture these details before escalating:
- The complete error text.
- The executable that displays it.
- The printer model.
- The Windows version and system type.
- The path returned by
