It is the legacy “Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 3300C Device Driver Toolkit DLL,” associated with the HP ScanJet 3300C scanner driver and Windows XP imaging support.
If Windows 10 or Windows 11 reports that hpgt33tk.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. First determine whether an old HP ScanJet is connected, whether an old application is expecting an XP-era driver, and whether the complete scanner software needs repair.

What hpgt33tk.dll is
Microsoft’s Windows XP scanner documentation lists the HP ScanJet 3300C among devices with Windows Imaging Acquisition, or WIA, driver support included in or supplied for Windows XP. The file was distributed as part of Microsoft’s Windows XP system software, but its purpose was specifically connected to HP ScanJet imaging support.
HP’s legacy support for the ScanJet 3300C family centers on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. That does not establish compatibility with Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Historical reports place the file in C:WindowsSystem32 and also in the Windows XP DLL cache. Those reports do not prove that every installation used the same path, version, or file layout.
Some third-party indexes report a file size of 48,128 bytes and version 5.1.2600.0, while another reports version 5.1.3505.0. Treat those as historical reports, not universal identification criteria. File metadata and the original installation source are more useful than a matching filename alone.
The names hpgt33.dll, hpgtmcro.dll, wiafbdrv.dll, and usbscan.sys may appear in the same scanner or imaging context. Their exact dependency relationships are not publicly documented, so replacing one file by hand is not a reliable way to repair the driver.

1. Confirm the Windows version
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winver. - Press Enter.
- Record whether the computer is running Windows 10, Windows 11, or an older release.
You can also check the system architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look beside System type.
A 32-bit legacy scanner driver may not work on 64-bit Windows even if a DLL with the correct name is present. Do not assume that putting a 32-bit file in both System32 and SysWOW64 will solve the problem. Those folders have different architecture roles, and copying files between them can make troubleshooting harder.
2. Confirm that the computer uses an HP ScanJet
Ask these questions:
- Is an HP ScanJet 3300C connected to this computer?
- Is another closely related older ScanJet model connected?
- Did the error begin after removing scanner software?
- Does an old scanning, fax, document-management, or image application start when the error appears?
If the answer to all of these is no, the message may come from an old application, a copied system image, or damaged software that is incorrectly expecting a scanner component.
3. Record the complete error
Common messages include:
- “The file hpgt33tk.dll is missing.”
- “hpgt33tk.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because hpgt33tk.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading hpgt33tk.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
These are generic loader messages. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency is missing, not necessarily that hpgt33tk.dll itself is absent.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete ScanJet driver
This is the most appropriate fix when the computer actually has an HP ScanJet 3300C or related legacy scanner.
Do not download only hpgt33tk.dll. The scanner requires a complete driver and imaging stack, including the appropriate WIA or TWAIN components and any software supplied for the device.
Remove the old scanner installation
- Disconnect the scanner from the computer.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Search for HP ScanJet software, HP scanning software, or a package installed for the scanner.
- Select the relevant entry.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
Then check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- If the old scanner remains listed, right-click it and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are intentionally removing the old package.
- Restart the computer again.
Install the correct package
Use the original HP installation media or HP’s official ScanJet 3300C support resources. Select the package intended for the scanner model and its supported Windows version. The available legacy package may be intended for Windows 2000 or Windows XP rather than Windows 10 or Windows 11.
If the installer refuses to run on modern Windows:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Test the Windows XP option.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Choose Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer.
Compatibility mode cannot create a modern 64-bit driver or bypass hardware incompatibility. If the installation completes but the scanner does not appear in Device Manager, the device may not have a usable driver for the current Windows release.
Reconnect the scanner only when the installer requests it, unless the manufacturer’s instructions say otherwise.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck the result
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the imaging-device category.
- Confirm that the scanner appears without a yellow warning icon.
- Open Windows Scan or the scanning program supplied for the device.
- Try a low-resolution preview or test scan.
If the scanner appears but the original program still reports hpgt33tk.dll, the program may be loading an old component from its own installation folder. Repair or reinstall that application as well.
For manual driver work, Microsoft’s driver installation guidance explains how to uninstall a device and let Windows reinstall it, while emphasizing that drivers should match the Windows version and architecture.
When you are sorting through old hardware packages and cannot tell which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and identify available repairs; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation and repair require the full version. It is optional, and the original HP package remains the authoritative choice for this scanner.
Fix 2: Repair protected Windows files
Use this path when the file disappeared after a Windows repair, malware cleanup, disk problem, or damaged system-image restoration.
The commands below apply to supported modern Windows versions. They are not identical to Windows XP repair procedures.

Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Keep the Command Prompt window open.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, do not download hpgt33tk.dll from an archive. Use an appropriate Windows installation source or move to the scanner-driver repair path.
Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
The result will usually indicate one of these outcomes:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files appear intact. Continue with the HP driver and application checks.
- Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart Windows and test the program or scanner again.
- Found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Review the repair details, run DISM again if necessary, and use Windows recovery or installation media if the problem continues.
Microsoft documents the DISM-then-SFC sequence in its System File Checker repair guidance.
For Windows XP, use System File Checker with the original Windows XP installation media when prompted for source files. The XP process and available repair commands differ from current Windows instructions.
If repeatedly running SFC and DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show the issues it detects; the free scan identifies problems, while automated repair requires the full version. It is not required, and it cannot make an unsupported ScanJet driver compatible with Windows 11.
Fix 3: Check Windows Update and Device Manager
Windows may already have a suitable generic imaging driver, even when it cannot use the original HP component.
Recommended Free Tools
Check for driver updates
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Other devices.
- Right-click the scanner or an unknown device with a warning icon.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, select Search for updated drivers on Windows Update if that option appears.
- Restart the computer.
If the scanner is not listed:
- In Device Manager, select Action.
- Select Scan for hardware changes.
- Disconnect and reconnect the scanner.
- Try a different USB port if the device uses USB.
- Check whether the scanner receives power.
Reinstall the detected device
If Device Manager shows an error:
- Right-click the scanner.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager again.
- Select Action, then Scan for hardware changes.
- Install the manufacturer’s compatible package if Windows does not supply a working driver.
A clean reinstall is preferable to copying a single DLL because it restores the driver’s files, services, device registration, and imaging interfaces together.
Fix 4: Check whether a Windows service is disabled
The Windows Image Acquisition service supports scanner and camera workflows on modern Windows.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Check Service status.
- If it is stopped, select Start.
- Set Startup type to Automatic or the setting required by the installed scanner software.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the scanning program.
If WIA will not start, note the exact error and inspect the listed dependencies in the service properties. A WIA failure can produce a scanner error without proving that hpgt33tk.dll is the missing file.
Fix 5: Check Optional Features without adding random components
hpgt33tk.dll is not repaired by enabling an unrelated Windows feature, Visual C++ package, DirectX package, or .NET version. Those packages are generally irrelevant unless the error names them separately.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

To review optional Windows components:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures.exe
- Press Enter.
- Review the Windows Features list.
- Do not enable features merely because a DLL-indexing page recommends them.
- Select Cancel unless you know that a specific application requires a particular feature.
For a legacy scanner, the relevant repair is normally the scanner driver, WIA configuration, or Windows file repair rather than a newly enabled feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 6: Investigate antivirus quarantine carefully
A malware cleanup or antivirus action can remove a legitimate old driver file, but a file with the right name is not automatically safe.
- Open your antivirus application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or Detection history.
- Search for
hpgt33tk.dll. - Read the detection name and original file path.
- Check whether the path was a normal Windows or driver location rather than a user-writable folder such as Downloads or a temporary directory.
- Check the file’s digital signature if the quarantine interface provides it.
- Restore the file only if the detection is confirmed to be a false positive and the original location and signature are legitimate.
- Repair or reinstall the complete scanner package afterward.
- Run another scan.
Do not restore a file simply because its filename matches the error. If the file was found in an application’s temporary folder, an email attachment directory, or another unexpected location, leave it quarantined and reinstall the legitimate software.
Fix 7: Decide whether Windows 10 or 11 can support the scanner
If you own a ScanJet 3300C and Windows 10 or Windows 11 cannot install a compatible driver, the missing DLL may be a symptom of unsupported legacy hardware rather than a missing file that can be repaired.
Check the following:
- Whether the scanner appears in Device Manager.
- Whether the HP installer supports your Windows release.
- Whether Windows supplies a usable WIA driver.
- Whether the scanner works in a supported older Windows environment.
- Whether the application is 32-bit and depends on an XP-era driver.
Do not install an XP DLL directly into modern system directories. Do not bypass driver requirements by copying files from an old computer. If the device has no compatible driver, use a supported older Windows environment for the scanner or replace the hardware.

What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random archive
Unverified DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong historical build, or the wrong architecture. Even a genuine file may not fix the missing dependency, driver registration, USB component, or application installation that caused the error.
There is no verified official standalone Microsoft or HP download for hpgt33tk.dll. Use the complete HP driver package, original Windows media, Windows Update, or Windows repair tools instead.
Do not copy it into both system folders
System32 does not simply mean “64-bit folder,” and SysWOW64 is not a universal backup location. Manual copying can cause version conflicts, incorrect loader behavior, and security problems.
Do not run regsvr32 as a universal repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that this toolkit DLL is a self-registering COM component.
Therefore, do not use:
regsvr32 hpgt33tk.dll
A registration error would not restore the scanner driver, its dependencies, or WIA support.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Installing multiple Visual C++ redistributables, DirectX packages, or .NET versions is not a reasonable response to this filename alone. Use those packages only when the failing program explicitly identifies one as missing.
If the error remains
Use this order:
- Identify the Windows version and architecture.
- Confirm the HP scanner model.
- Remove the old scanner package.
- Restart and remove the stale device entry in Device Manager.
- Install the complete compatible HP or Windows driver package.
- Start or repair Windows Image Acquisition.
- Run DISM followed by SFC on supported modern Windows.
- Check antivirus quarantine and the original file path.
- Repair the application that displays the message.
- If the scanner is unsupported, use an older supported environment or replace it.
A persistent error from an old application with no connected ScanJet usually means that application still expects a legacy scanner component. Uninstalling or reinstalling that application is more appropriate than adding hpgt33tk.dll manually.

Is hpgt33tk.dll a virus?
The filename identifies a historical HP ScanJet-related Windows component, but a filename alone cannot prove that a particular copy is legitimate. Check its original path, digital signature, antivirus record, and associated driver installation.
Is it part of Windows?
It was historically included or supplied with Windows XP scanner and WIA support. It should not be treated as a standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 runtime.
Do I need this file for games?
There is no verified evidence that hpgt33tk.dll is game middleware. Its documented context is HP ScanJet imaging support. If a game reports it, inspect the game installation and any unrelated legacy software installed on the computer.
Will installing it fix Windows 11?
Not reliably. Windows 11 may be unable to use the old 32-bit scanner driver even when the DLL is present. Check hardware and driver compatibility first.
Should I place it in System32?
No. Do not manually copy an unverified file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. Reinstall the complete driver package.
Why does the message say the module could not be found when the file exists?
The loader may be unable to find a dependency, may be loading an incompatible 32-bit component, or may be encountering an invalid driver installation. The message does not prove that the named file is the only problem.
Should I register the DLL?
No. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command, and this file has not been verified as a self-registering DLL. Use driver reinstall and Windows file repair instead.
What is the safest source?
Use the original HP ScanJet installation package, compatible Windows installation media, Windows Update, Device Manager, and Microsoft’s built-in repair tools. Avoid standalone DLL download sites archives.
