Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If mpx interface.dll is missing, Windows is usually reporting a damaged or incomplete Microsoft Visio installation. The real file is normally named MPXINT.DLL, and the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the matching Visio or Office installation rather than download an isolated DLL.
What this file actually does
“MPX Interface DLL” is a description associated with the actual filename MPXINT.DLL. Microsoft’s Visio servicing records list Mpxint.dll as a Visio program file, including in Visio 2013 and Visio 2016 update packages.

That makes this a Microsoft Visio application file, not a normal Windows component. It is not a Visual C++ redistributable, DirectX file, or .NET runtime file. Microsoft’s update records show that it is serviced as part of Visio rather than provided as an independent Windows download.

The file may be involved when Visio starts or when another application uses a Visio-related component. The exact error can vary:
#1 Best Overall
- “The file MPXINT.DLL is missing.”
- “MPXINT.DLL was not found.”
- “Cannot find MPXINT.DLL.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- “MPXINT.DLL could not be loaded.”
- “MPXINT.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing. A missing-file message usually means the file cannot be found. A “not designed to run on Windows” or entry-point message more often indicates corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a missing dependency.
Do not copy a downloaded replacement into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. A replacement from an unknown source may be malicious, may belong to a different Visio build, or may have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| The error started after an Office or Visio update | Incomplete or damaged Visio update | Run Office or Visio Online Repair |
| Visio disappeared from Installed apps or will not launch | Damaged installation registration or missing program files | Repair, then reinstall if necessary |
| The file was detected by antivirus | Quarantine or security-software removal | Check quarantine, then repair Visio |
| The error says the file is not designed to run on Windows | Corrupt binary or wrong architecture | Repair the matching installation |
| Copying a DLL did not help | Wrong file, wrong path, or another dependency is missing | Remove the copied file and repair Visio |
| Only one third-party program reports the error | That program may be referencing a Visio component incorrectly | Repair Visio and reinstall the affected program |
| Several Windows applications also fail | Possible Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The message names a different DLL | MPXINT.DLL may not be the real dependency | Troubleshoot the named file instead |
Fix 1: Run Visio Online Repair
Online Repair is the most reliable first step because it replaces missing or damaged Visio files using Microsoft’s installation source.
For Windows 11
- Close Visio and all other Office applications.
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Search for Visio.
- If Visio is installed separately, select the three-dot menu beside Visio.
- Choose Modify.
- If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt, select Yes.
- Select Online Repair.
- Select Repair and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows when the repair finishes.
- Start Visio again.
If Visio is installed as part of an Office product, search for the Office entry instead. Select its three-dot menu, choose Modify, then select Online Repair.
For Windows 10
- Close Visio and Office.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Apps & features.
- Find Microsoft Visio or the Microsoft Office installation containing Visio.
- Select the program and choose Modify.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Select Online Repair, then select Repair.
- Restart Windows after the process completes.
The exact labels can differ slightly between Click-to-Run, MSI-based, perpetual, and subscription installations. If you see Quick Repair and Online Repair, Quick Repair is a reasonable initial attempt, but Online Repair is the more thorough option.
How to tell whether repair worked
The repair succeeded if Visio opens without the MPXINT.DLL message and the affected document or feature works normally. You should not need to register MPXINT.DLL manually.
If the error remains, do not immediately download another copy of the file. Continue with the installation and architecture checks below.

Visio can be installed as a standalone product or as part of an Office deployment. Different releases and installation technologies may use different file locations and servicing methods.
To identify the installed product:
- Open Visio if it will start.
- Select File.
- Select Account.
- Look under Product Information.
- Note the product name, version, update channel, and whether it is a subscription, perpetual, or volume-license installation.
- Select About Visio if you need the detailed build and architecture information.
If Visio will not open:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for Visio and Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Record which entries are installed.
Microsoft’s servicing records identify Mpxint.dll in Visio update packages, including Visio 2013 and Visio 2016. Do not assume that a file from one release is interchangeable with another release. The correct repair source is the Visio edition and installation channel already licensed for that computer.

Fix 3: Resolve a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
A 32-bit Visio installation and a 64-bit Visio installation are not interchangeable. Installing an x86 DLL into an x64 installation, or the reverse, can produce a missing-entry-point or invalid-image error even when a file with the right name exists.
To check the Office architecture from Visio:
- Open Visio.
- Select File.
- Select Account.
- Select About Visio.
- Look for 32-bit or 64-bit in the dialog.
If Visio will not open, check the architecture of the Office installation from another Office application, if available. You can also inspect the installed product entry and the organization’s deployment documentation.
If you need to change architecture:
- Confirm which architecture your organization or Microsoft account requires.
- Back up locally stored work and close Office applications.
- Uninstall the existing Visio or Office installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to the licensed Microsoft portal or use the installation package supplied by your organization.
- Install the intended 32-bit or 64-bit edition.
- Restart Windows and test Visio.
Microsoft advises uninstalling one Office architecture before installing the other. Do not solve an architecture problem by copying files between program folders.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall Visio from the official source
If Online Repair completes but the error returns, the installation may be incomplete, mixed with another Office channel, or damaged beyond what repair can replace.
Reinstall standalone Visio
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Visio.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account or organization portal that supplied Visio.
- Download and install the same licensed edition.
- Choose the intended architecture if the installer offers that choice.
- Restart Windows and test Visio.
Reinstall Visio associated with Office
If Visio is deployed through Microsoft 365 or an organization-managed Office package, do not install a random standalone edition over it. Contact the administrator or use the organization’s approved Office deployment process.
If the installation cannot be removed normally, Microsoft’s Office installation troubleshooting guidance and official uninstall tools can help remove the damaged Office installation before reinstalling it.
What success looks like
After reinstalling, the Visio entry should appear normally in Installed apps, Visio should launch without MPXINT.DLL, and the error should not return after restarting Windows.
If a non-Visio program still reports the error, repair or reinstall that program too. It may be referencing a Visio component from an invalid path or may have its own damaged installation.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a program file after an update or during a false-positive detection. This is less common than ordinary installation corruption, but it is worth checking before reinstalling.
Rank #3
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
MPXINT.DLLor the Visio installation directory. - Review the detection details and file location.
- If the file is clearly part of the genuine Microsoft Visio installation and the detection is a false positive, follow your security product’s restore or allow procedure.
- Run Visio repair after restoring the file.
Do not disable antivirus merely to install an arbitrary DLL. If the file repeatedly disappears, appears outside a legitimate Visio directory, or is replaced by suspicious files, run a full security scan and investigate the installation instead of repeatedly restoring the file.

A failed or incomplete update can leave Visio files in an inconsistent state.
Update Office or Visio
If Visio opens:
- Select File.
- Select Account.
- Select Update Options.
- Select Update Now.
- Allow the update to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Visio.
If the update controls are missing, the installation may be managed by an organization. Use the organization’s update process or contact its administrator.
Update Windows
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when requested.
- Check again until Windows reports that no additional updates are ready.
- Run Visio Online Repair again if the error remains.
Windows Update will not normally provide MPXINT.DLL as a standalone system file. The purpose of this step is to correct broader servicing problems and keep the Office installation compatible.
Fix 7: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
MPXINT.DLL belongs to Visio, so System File Checker is not the primary repair method for this particular file. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while Visio repair restores Visio program files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use DISM and SFC when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or you are seeing several unrelated application errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Run Visio Online Repair again if necessary.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test Windows and Visio. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, repeat the Visio repair or reinstall rather than assuming SFC restored MPXINT.DLL.
When manually comparing Windows component versions and repeating DISM or SFC becomes difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling Visio remains the definitive fix for a Visio-owned file.
Fix 8: Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLL and OCX files that expose a self-registration entry point, commonly COM components. It is not a general command for restoring application files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor example, this command is not a proper default fix:
Rank #4
regsvr32 MPXINT.DLL
It may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point was not found. That does not prove Windows is missing another registration step. It usually means the file is not designed to be registered in that way.
Use registration commands only when the software vendor specifically documents that the particular DLL is a self-registering component and provides the correct path and command. Microsoft’s Visio servicing information does not identify MPXINT.DLL as a file that users should register manually.
Fix 9: Check drivers only when another error points to a driver
A graphics or printer driver can cause Visio rendering, printing, or startup problems, but it does not normally restore a missing Visio program file. If the message names a display, printer, scanner, or other device driver in addition to MPXINT.DLL, update that driver separately.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Printers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Install any offered update.
- Restart Windows and test Visio.
For a clean reinstall:
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm only if you have the correct replacement driver available.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver from the device manufacturer or your organization’s approved source.
When several devices need checking, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows what is wrong, while driver installation through the full version removes the need to hunt through many hardware pages. It is optional, and driver work will not replace a missing Visio file when Visio itself is damaged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 10: Use System Restore or malware checks only in specific cases
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a known software change and ordinary Visio repair or reinstallation is unavailable.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore may remove recently installed applications or updates. It is not a substitute for repairing Visio and should not be the first response to a normal missing-file error.
Investigate malware when MPXINT.DLL repeatedly disappears, the file is found in an unusual directory, security software reports suspicious behavior, or other signs of compromise are present. Run a full scan with Windows Security and follow your organization’s incident-response process if the computer is managed.
Why downloading mpx interface.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites pages cannot reliably determine which Visio edition, update level, installation channel, or architecture your computer requires. A file may have the correct name but still be the wrong binary, corrupted, unsigned, or missing a dependency.
Manual copying also leaves the damaged Visio installation untouched. The next update may remove the copied file, replace it with another version, or fail again because the installation registration is still broken.
Use Microsoft’s official Visio installation source, Office repair, Windows Update, and your organization’s licensed deployment portal. Do not place an isolated DLL in System32, SysWOW64, the Windows directory, or a random application folder.

Frequently asked questions
Is the filename mpx interface.dll or MPXINT.DLL?
“MPX Interface DLL” is the descriptive name. The actual Microsoft-documented filename is Mpxint.dll, commonly displayed as MPXINT.DLL. Windows error messages may show the filename while search results show the description.
Which Visio editions contain MPXINT.DLL?
Microsoft update records list the file in Visio 2013 and Visio 2016 packages. Microsoft also distributes other Visio editions, but you should not assume that every edition contains the file or that files can be exchanged between releases. Repair the exact Visio installation on the computer.
Is MPXINT.DLL a Windows system file?
There is no evidence that it is a standard Windows System32 or SysWOW64 component. It is associated with Microsoft Visio and should normally be restored through Visio or Office repair.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET restore it?
No. Those are separate runtimes. Install them only if the error also names a dependency that specifically requires one of them.
Should I run regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 does not repair an ordinary missing Visio implementation library and may return an entry-point error.
What if the file exists but Visio still will not start?
The file may be corrupt, unsigned, the wrong architecture, or missing another dependency. Run Online Repair, verify the 32-bit or 64-bit installation, and inspect the exact error for another named DLL.
What if the error appears in a game or another application?
Identify that application first. It may have bundled or incorrectly referenced a Visio component. Repair Visio, then repair or reinstall the application that produces the message.
When should I use SFC and DISM?
Use them for broader Windows corruption, Windows Update problems, or several unrelated system failures. They are secondary for MPXINT.DLL; Visio repair is the direct fix.
What if repair does not restore the file?
Uninstall the damaged Visio or Office installation, restart Windows, and reinstall the same licensed edition and architecture from Microsoft or your organization’s official portal. If the message names a different DLL afterward, troubleshoot that dependency separately.
