Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program shows the error? Is it HP PrecisionScan, a TWAIN application, an old image editor, or a program you no longer use?
- When does it appear? At startup, when opening scanning software, or after an update, cleanup, antivirus detection, or uninstall?
- Do you still own an HP ScanJet 4200C, 4200Cse, or 4200Cxi?
- Which Windows version is installed? Press Windows + R, type
winver, and press Enter. - Is Windows 32-bit or 64-bit? Open Settings > System > About and check System type.
hpgt42tk.dll is associated with the legacy Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 4200C device-driver toolkit. It is not a normal Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file, so reinstalling those packages usually does not solve this error.
The safest solution is to repair or reinstall the complete HP ScanJet 4200C PrecisionScan software package for the correct operating system. Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL or copying it into System32.

Some file indexes describe it as part of Microsoft Windows and associate it with the Microsoft Windows Operating System. Historical Windows records also show the filename under a Windows system directory. However, the practical repair path is still the HP scanner driver and software package, not a modern Windows runtime installation.

The file is a legacy 32-bit component. Its presence or absence does not prove that a current version of Windows supports the scanner. A 32-bit application can sometimes run on 64-bit Windows, but old scanner drivers, TWAIN components, and WIA integrations may not work correctly on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Fix 1: Repair the HP scanner software
If the error began after a failed update, partial uninstall, cleanup utility, or damaged installation, repair the installed HP software first.

- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Search for entries containing:
- HP ScanJet
- HP PrecisionScan
- PrecisionScan LT
- Hewlett-Packard scanner software
- Select the three-dot menu beside the relevant entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
If Windows does not show a Repair button, open the program’s menu and choose Modify or Repair, if the installer provides that option.
Restart Windows and launch the scanning application again.
How to tell whether repair worked
Repair succeeded if:
- the application opens without the
hpgt42tk.dllmessage; - the scanner appears in the program’s device list;
- a preview or test scan starts normally.
If the error remains, continue with a clean removal and reinstall.
Fix 2: Remove and reinstall the complete HP package
Do not replace only hpgt42tk.dll. The scanner package includes related driver, TWAIN, WIA, configuration, and support files. Installing one DLL can leave the rest of the installation mismatched.

Uninstall the existing software

On older Windows versions:

If the program is not listed, check whether an HP scanner folder remains under C:Program Files or C:Program Files (x86). Do not manually delete shared Windows folders. Remove only clearly identified leftover HP software after confirming that no other HP device depends on it.

Open HP’s official support page for the HP Scanjet 4200c Scanner series and select the operating system that matches the computer. HP’s current support choices for this retired scanner are focused on legacy systems such as Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Download the complete driver and software package from HP when a matching package is available. Historical package names may appear in search results, but an old third-party listing is not a substitute for verifying the download through HP.
After downloading:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- If the installer will not start, enable Run this program in compatibility mode for and choose the oldest Windows version appropriate for the package.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Choose Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer.
- Connect the scanner only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows.
If the package installs but the scanner is still not detected, the remaining problem is probably hardware, USB, TWAIN/WIA, or operating-system compatibility rather than a missing DLL.

Fix 3: Check the driver in Device Manager
Because hpgt42tk.dll belongs to an old hardware-driver package, inspect Device Manager for a failed or orphaned scanner entry.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for an HP ScanJet entry or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
If Windows lists the scanner:
- Right-click it.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete HP package.
If the device is listed as Unknown device, unplug the scanner, restart, and connect it directly to another USB port. Avoid an unpowered USB hub during testing.
If Device Manager shows no scanner at all, reinstalling hpgt42tk.dll will not solve the detection problem. Check the cable, power supply, USB connection, and compatibility of the old scanner with the current version of Windows.
When several old drivers are installed, manually identifying the correct package can be difficult, especially after repeated upgrades and removals. Fix 4: Use compatibility settings for the old scanner program
Compatibility mode can help an old 32-bit application launch, but it cannot create a modern driver for unsupported hardware.
- Find the shortcut for HP PrecisionScan or the program showing the error.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try the Windows version closest to the software’s intended release.
- Select Run this program as an administrator if the application requires it.
- Choose Apply > OK.
- Launch the program again.
If the application opens but cannot find the scanner, the executable is compatible enough to start, but the underlying driver is not working. Reinstalling the application repeatedly will not overcome an unsupported scanner driver.
Fix 5: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine an old driver file. Do not restore it automatically just because the filename appears in an error message.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item associated with the HP scanner installation.
- Restore the file only if:
- it came from a verified HP installer;
- the detection is clearly a false positive;
- the associated software is still required.
If the file came from an unknown DLL website, do not restore it. Remove it and obtain the complete driver package from HP instead.

After restoring a verified file, reinstall or repair the full HP software package so its related files are consistent.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use Windows repair commands when the error appears alongside broader signs of system corruption, such as several protected Windows files failing, update problems, or unexplained Windows component errors.
These commands are not a replacement for reinstalling HP scanner software. They may not restore a file that belongs to an old third-party driver package.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files were not corrupted.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: inspect the CBS log, use a matching repair source where supported, or perform a Windows repair installation.
For Windows XP, current DISM instructions do not apply. SFC may require the original Windows installation media or matching source files.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
If hpgt42tk.dll worked until a driver update, Windows update, cleanup operation, or failed migration, System Restore may reverse that change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point, if available.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the list.
- Select Next > Finish.
System Restore can revert system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before continuing.
After restoration, test the scanner software. If the error returns after reinstalling an old driver, compatibility rather than corruption is likely the underlying issue.
Do not copy hpgt42tk.dll into System32
Downloading a lone DLL from a random DLL repository is unsafe and usually incomplete. The file may have:
- the wrong build;
- the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture;
- missing dependencies;
- incorrect permissions;
- altered or malicious contents.
Do not copy one downloaded file into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit directory and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Putting an old DLL in both locations is not a standard repair.

A copied file may also hide the real cause: a damaged HP installation, a removed startup component, an incompatible scanner driver, or an orphaned shortcut.

Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs that provide the required registration entry points. A driver toolkit or ordinary dependency DLL may not support registration.

and receive a message saying that the module could not be loaded or that a registration entry point is missing, that does not prove the file needs registration. It generally means regsvr32 is the wrong repair method.
Use the HP installer to place and configure the file. Do not unregister and re-register it repeatedly.
Are Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fixes?
Not normally. hpgt42tk.dll is identified with the old HP ScanJet 4200C driver toolkit, not with a current Microsoft runtime.
Installing Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET may be appropriate when a separate error explicitly names one of those components. It is not a logical fix for a missing HP scanner DLL.

- Review the listed components.
- Change a feature only when the HP installation instructions or the affected application specifically requires it.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable legacy components merely because the filename is missing.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility
The HP ScanJet 4200C is retired hardware, and HP’s current support information exposes legacy Windows 2000 and Windows XP choices. A package designed for those systems may install under compatibility settings but still fail to operate on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

A successful launch after restoring hpgt42tk.dll does not prove that scanning, TWAIN, WIA, USB communication, or image transfer will work.
If you no longer use the HP scanner
If the error appears only because an old startup entry or shortcut remains:
- Uninstall the HP scanner software from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Disable an entry that clearly belongs to the removed HP scanner software.
- Check the Start menu and desktop for obsolete shortcuts.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete an entry merely because it contains “HP.” Confirm that it belongs to the retired ScanJet software and not to an HP printer or another device.
