“The program can’t start because hpgwiamd.dll is missing from your computer.” If Windows reports that hpgwiamd.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or failed to register, the problem usually belongs to old Hewlett-Packard scanner software rather than Windows itself.
Which fix applies to you
Use the matching path below before changing anything:
- The error appeared after reinstalling Windows or removing HP software: perform a clean HP scanner software reinstall.
- You see Error 1904 or “failed to register”: check whether the scanner and its legacy installer support your Windows version.
- The scanner appears in Windows, but HP scanning software does not: check the Windows Image Acquisition service and related services.
- The file disappeared after antivirus activity: inspect Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- Several Windows components are also failing: run DISM and System File Checker.
- The problem started after a driver update: roll back or reinstall the scanner driver through Device Manager.
- The installer fails every time on Windows 10 or Windows 11: the scanner may be unsupported, not missing one recoverable DLL.
Do not start by downloading hpgwiamd.dll from a DLL collection site. The replacement must match the scanner model, HP software package, architecture, dependencies, and registration steps.
What hpgwiamd.dll actually is
hpgwiamd.dll is a Hewlett-Packard Windows Image Acquisition, or WIA, minidriver. Microsoft describes WIA minidrivers as vendor-supplied components loaded by the Windows Image Acquisition service to communicate with scanners and other imaging devices. See Microsoft’s WIA architecture documentation.

This is an HP hardware-driver component, not a normal Windows runtime file. It is not a Visual C++ redistributable, DirectX component, or .NET library.
Legacy HP Scanjet software and older HP multifunction printer packages could install it. Documented associations include older Scanjet models such as the 2110, 3500c, 3670, 4470c, and 5590, but the filename alone cannot identify one exact scanner.
The historical component is a 32-bit Win32 file. Older installations placed it in locations such as:
C:WindowsSystem32on 32-bit Windows- An HP program directory
- A 32-bit program directory on 64-bit Windows
C:WindowsSysWOW64in some legacy 64-bit installations
Those locations do not prove that a copy is correct. System32 can contain vendor files installed by older hardware packages, and copying a DLL between System32, SysWOW64, and an application folder can create a second architecture or registration problem.

Error 1904 has been reported with older Scanjet installations, including the 4470c and 5590. On newer Windows releases, that often points to installer incompatibility rather than a file that can be fixed by copying it into a folder.
Fix 1: Cleanly reinstall the complete HP scanner package
This is the most likely solution when the problem began after an incomplete uninstall, Windows reinstall, or failed driver setup.
1. Disconnect the scanner
Turn off the scanner if it has a power switch, then disconnect its USB cable. Leave it disconnected until the installer asks for it.

- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds.
- Search for the scanner model and HP scanning software.
- Select each related HP entry and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
Also remove the device entry:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the old HP scanner or multifunction device.
- Select Remove.
If the HP package has a separate imaging, TWAIN, or scanning utility entry, remove that as well. Do not remove unrelated HP printer software unless it belongs to the same device package.

3. Identify the exact model and Windows edition
Check the label on the scanner or its original documentation. Then open Settings > System > About and note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
Search HP’s official support area for the exact model and select the installed Windows version. HP support pages for many older Scanjet products list only Windows 2000, XP, or Vista. If your current operating system is not listed, HP may not support that scanner on it.
Download the complete driver and software package for the model, not an isolated DLL.

4. Install in the correct order
- Run the HP installer.
- If Windows displays a compatibility warning, do not assume compatibility mode will make the entire package work.
- Connect the scanner only when the installer requests it.
- Complete the setup.
- Restart Windows again.
- Open the HP scanning application or Windows scanning software.
- Perform a test scan.
The fix worked if the HP application opens without the hpgwiamd.dll message and the scanner completes a preview or scan. If the installer again stops at Error 1904, continue to the compatibility section rather than copying the file manually.
Fix 2: Check Windows Image Acquisition and related services
The DLL can exist on disk while scanning still fails because Windows cannot provide the WIA service path.
Check the WIA service
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- Select Start if the service is stopped.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Restart the computer and test the scanner again.
Also check that these supporting services are running or available:
- Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
- DCOM Server Process Launcher
- RPC Endpoint Mapper
- Shell Hardware Detection
Do not change service permissions or registry settings while troubleshooting. If WIA will not start, note the exact Windows error and continue with the system repair steps below.

Device Manager is useful when Windows has detected the scanner but its driver installation is damaged.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers, depending on how Windows categorizes the hardware.
- Locate the HP scanner.
- Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Read the Device status message under the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab.
Try Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers first. If Windows finds no suitable driver, return to the Driver tab and choose Uninstall Device. If Windows offers to remove the driver package, select that option only when you are sure the entry belongs to the affected HP scanner.

Restart Windows, keep the scanner disconnected, and reinstall the complete HP package for the model. Reconnect the scanner only when prompted.
A generic driver may allow basic scanning, but it does not guarantee that the original HP application, TWAIN interface, shortcut buttons, or WIA minidriver will work.

Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software may remove a legacy component if it is considered suspicious or if the HP installation is incomplete. Do not restore a file simply because its name matches the error.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning hpgwiamd.dll, the HP installer, or the scanner application.
- Expand the entry and review its path and detection details.
Restore the item only if the path clearly belongs to a trusted, intact HP installation and you are confident it is a false detection. Microsoft explains the process in its Protection history guidance.
If the file was removed from an incomplete or obsolete installation, reinstall the complete HP package instead. Run a full Windows Security scan before restoring any quarantined component.

DISM and SFC are secondary repairs for damaged Windows components. They generally will not recreate an HP-owned DLL removed by an HP uninstaller, but they can repair Windows components and infrastructure that WIA relies on.
Run DISM first
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Keep the window open even if progress appears to pause.
A successful result reports that the restore operation completed. If DISM reports that it could not repair the component store, record the message and continue only if Windows allows the next command.
Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found files it could not repair. Restart Windows after it completes, then test WIA and the scanner.
If these commands report healthy Windows files but hpgwiamd.dll is still missing, return to the HP package reinstall. SFC is not a substitute for a matching third-party driver.

A message such as:
Error 1904. Module ...hpgwiamd.dll failed to register.
does not prove that the DLL itself is corrupt. The installer may be unable to register a 32-bit component because the package, dependencies, registration mechanism, or operating system no longer match.
Check the exact scanner support page and compare its listed operating systems with yours. If the model was designed for Windows XP or Vista and no Windows 10 or Windows 11 package is listed, repeated installation attempts may not produce a stable result.
Possible practical outcomes include:
- Use the scanner with a supported older Windows installation.
- Use a compatible scanning application only if it supports that hardware and interface.
- Replace the scanner with a model supported by the current operating system.
Do not disable Windows security features or force an unknown installer simply to make Error 1904 disappear.
Why regsvr32 is usually not the answer
Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a utility for registering DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry point. Its syntax is documented in the Microsoft regsvr32 reference.
For this file, manual registration is not a definitive repair. The HP installer was supposed to place the component, dependencies, registry information, and architecture-specific registration together. A command such as:
regsvr32 hpgwiamd.dll
may fail because the current directory is wrong, the DLL is 32-bit, a dependency is missing, registration exports are unavailable, or the component is not compatible with the operating system.
Use regsvr32 only when an HP support procedure for the exact scanner model explicitly requires it and gives the correct file path. Do not copy the DLL into both System32 and SysWOW64.

Do not download hpgwiamd.dll separately
Random DLL downloads create several risks:
- The file may contain malware or be tampered with.
- Its architecture may not match Windows or the HP application.
- Its version may belong to another scanner package.
- Required dependencies and registry entries may still be missing.
- Copying it into a system folder can make later cleanup harder.
- The error may actually be caused by an unsupported scanner.
The safe sources are the exact HP product support page, the original trusted HP installation media, and Windows Update when it offers a compatible driver. Microsoft repair commands are appropriate for Windows components, not as a source for an HP-owned file.
Optional last resort: System Restore
If scanning worked before a recent driver update or HP software removal, System Restore may help when a suitable restore point exists.

- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore reverts system files, drivers, and settings. It does not guarantee recovery of one third-party DLL, and it will not make an unsupported scanner compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains the process.
Prevention
- Keep the scanner model and supported Windows versions recorded before reinstalling Windows.
- Save the complete HP installer from a trusted source rather than saving a loose DLL.
- Disconnect the scanner during uninstall and reconnect it only when the installer requests it.
- Do not mix files from different Scanjet packages.
- Avoid registry cleaners and blind DLL registration commands.
- Check Windows Security Protection history before restoring quarantined files.
- If the scanner is no longer supported, replace it or keep it connected to a supported older Windows environment.
FAQ
Is hpgwiamd.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a Hewlett-Packard WIA minidriver used by older scanner and multifunction-device software. An HP installer may place it in a Windows directory, but that does not make it a Microsoft component.
Does Microsoft Visual C++ fix hpgwiamd.dll?
There is no evidence that this filename requires a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributable. Install the correct HP scanner package first.
Can I copy hpgwiamd.dll into System32?
No. A copied file may have the wrong architecture, version, dependencies, or registration. Reinstall the complete package for the exact scanner.
