hpi_adjust.dll Missing: Repair Legacy HP Photo Software Safely

hpi_adjust.dll is missing when an older HP application tries to load the HPI_Adj Dynamic Link Library. The error is usually tied to HP Photo Printing, HP Photo and Imaging, or an old HP printer and scanner utility rather than to Windows itself.

Before changing anything, note:

  • Which program displays the error: an HP photo application, printer utility, scanner tool, startup helper, or another program.
  • When it appears: at Windows sign-in, when opening the application, while printing, or after an uninstall, upgrade, backup restore, cleanup, or antivirus quarantine.
  • Whether the application is old: modern HP software may not use this DLL at all.
  • Your Windows architecture: 64-bit Windows can run many 32-bit applications, but the application still needs the correct 32-bit DLL and compatible dependencies.
  • The file’s current location: a copy inside an HP application folder is more plausible than one in C:WindowsSystem32.

Do not begin by downloading hpi_adjust.dll from a random DLL archive or copying it into a Windows system folder. That can introduce malware, use the wrong architecture or version, and leave the damaged HP installation unfixed.

What is hpi_adjust.dll?

hpi_adjust.dll is an obsolete HP application component. Its internal description is reported as HPI_Adj DLL, and it belongs to the HPI_Adj Dynamic Link Library program.

Historical file inventories associate it with HP Photo Printing and HP Photo and Imaging software bundled with older HP PSC, Deskjet, Photosmart, and Scanjet products. HP’s own documentation confirms that older Photo and Imaging software packages were distributed with several of those product families.

The exact HP product cannot be identified from the filename alone. The error may come from:

  • HP Photo Printing
  • HP Photo and Imaging
  • HP Album Printing or a related photo utility
  • An old HP printer or scanner installation
  • A startup helper left behind after part of an HP suite was removed

Historical reports identify the file as a 32-bit Windows component. That does not mean it belongs in System32 or SysWOW64. It normally belongs beside the HP program that loads it, often in an HP application directory such as:

C:Program FilesHPPhotoPrintingTemplates

That path is an example of a historical installation location, not a guaranteed location for every release.

Fix 1: Identify and repair the HP application

This is the most likely solution because the DLL is an application file, not a protected Windows component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find the program named in the error

  1. Reproduce the error.
  2. Read the full dialog carefully.
  3. Note the executable name if Windows displays it.
  4. Open Settings with Windows + I.
  5. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  6. Search for entries containing:
  7. HP
  8. Photo
  9. Imaging
  10. Album
  11. PSC
  12. Photosmart
  13. Scanjet
  14. Sort by installation date if the problem began after recent software changes.

Also check startup items:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for old HP photo, printer, scanner, or imaging helpers.
  4. If the error appears immediately after sign-in, temporarily disable the related HP startup entry.
  5. Restart Windows and see whether the error stops.

Disabling a startup helper does not repair the application, but it can identify which package is calling hpi_adjust.dll.

Repair the installed package

Some older installers expose a repair option:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps and Installed apps.
  3. Select the relevant HP program.
  4. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Restart Windows and launch the HP application again.

If there is no repair option:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
  3. Select the HP Photo Printing or HP Photo and Imaging entry.
  4. Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall.
  5. Use Repair if the installer provides it.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Test the application.

If repair fails, uninstall the complete old HP photo or imaging package, restart, and reinstall it from the original HP installation CD, a verified backup, or the official HP product-support package for the exact printer or scanner model. Reinstalling only the printer driver may not restore the photo software or its DLLs because the driver and photo suite can be separate packages.

What success looks like

The repair worked if:

  • The HP program opens without the missing-DLL dialog.
  • Printing or photo import works normally.
  • The HP application folder contains its other supporting files.
  • The error does not return after restarting Windows.

If the installer itself fails, record its exact message. An installer failure is evidence that the old package may be incompatible with your Windows release, not proof that another copy of the DLL should be downloaded.

Fix 2: Reinstall the complete legacy HP suite

Use this route when the program was partially removed, files were deleted manually, or a Windows upgrade left an old HP installation incomplete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove the damaged package

  1. Disconnect the printer or scanner if the HP installer requests it.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Remove the HP Photo Printing, Photo and Imaging, Album, or model-specific software.
  4. If the package does not appear there, open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  5. Restart Windows after uninstalling.
  6. Do not manually delete random DLLs from Windows folders.

If an old HP uninstall entry is broken, use the original installation media’s setup program and choose its removal or repair option. If that is unavailable, remove only the clearly identified HP application, not unrelated Microsoft runtimes or system components.

  • PICTURE-PERFECT PHOTO FEATURES – The HP Sprocket Studio Plus gives you several different and unique ways to take a photo. Don’t miss out on the chance to make a collage, do a photobooth, create a photo ID, and so much more.

Reinstall from a trusted source

Use, in this order:

  1. The original HP CD supplied with the printer or scanner.
  2. A verified backup made from that same installation.
  3. The official HP support page for the exact product model.
  4. A supported replacement HP application if the old suite is no longer offered.

Run the installer by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator. Follow the installer’s device-connection instructions rather than connecting the hardware at an arbitrary point.

If the installer offers compatibility options, let it install its own files into the application directory. Do not redirect the DLL to System32 or SysWOW64.

Fix 3: Check whether modern Windows still supports the HP software

A restored DLL does not make an obsolete application compatible with current Windows.

For an older HP PSC, Deskjet, Photosmart, or Scanjet:

  1. Identify the exact model from the device label or Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Open the official HP product-support page for that model.
  3. Select your Windows version.
  4. Check whether HP offers a full software package, only a basic driver, or an in-OS driver.
  5. Read the installation notes before downloading anything.
  6. Install the current supported driver or application package.
  7. Test printing or scanning without reinstalling the old photo suite unless you specifically need it.

For example, HP’s support information for the PSC 1215 identifies an in-OS Windows 10 driver rather than promising that the old Photo and Imaging suite remains compatible. A printer can therefore work in Windows while its historical photo application still fails.

Use compatibility settings only for a specific legacy program

If the installer or application is known to work on an older Windows release:

  1. Right-click the installer or application executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose an older Windows version suggested by the original software documentation.
  6. Select Run this program as an administrator only if necessary.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Run the installer or application again.

Compatibility mode is not a guarantee. If the suite depends on obsolete drivers, unsupported installers, or hardware components that modern Windows no longer accepts, stop trying to force the DLL into place. Use the supported in-box printer driver, a newer imaging application, or an older compatible Windows environment.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and recent cleanup

Security software or cleanup tools can remove an old DLL, especially when the file is unusual and no longer commonly distributed. That does not prove the file is safe or that a specific false-positive campaign exists.

Check protection history

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry involving the HP application folder or hpi_adjust.dll.
  5. Confirm that the detection belongs to the HP installation you recognize.
  6. Do not restore the file if it came from an unknown directory, a suspicious installer, or an unofficial archive.
  7. If the original HP location and installation media are trustworthy, use the available restore or allow action.
  8. Repair or reinstall the complete HP package afterward.

Do not disable antivirus protection merely to run an unknown DLL. If the security product continues to detect the file, leave it quarantined and obtain a fresh package from HP or use a supported replacement application.

Check recent cleanup or backup activity

If the error began after a disk cleanup, failed Windows upgrade, backup restore, or manual deletion:

  • Restore the complete HP application from a known-good backup.
  • Use the original installation media where possible.
  • Do not restore only an isolated DLL from an unidentified backup.
  • Check whether the backup preserved the application’s folder structure and related files.

System Restore can help if the removal was recent and a suitable restore point exists:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs.
  7. Review the changes.
  8. Select Finish if the restore point is appropriate.

System Restore is not a substitute for reinstalling the HP package. It may also remove applications or drivers installed after the selected restore point.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only if other programs are also failing

Because hpi_adjust.dll belongs to an HP application, Windows component repair is not the primary fix. Run these commands when you also see corruption in Windows features, multiple unrelated applications, or system components.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the HP application again.

Microsoft describes DISM and System File Checker as tools for repairing protected Windows components. They are unlikely to recreate an HP DLL removed from an HP application directory.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real problem is an incomplete third-party installation. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its repair action is handled by the full version, but reinstalling the HP program remains the definitive fix when that program owns the missing file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Update the printer or scanner driver through supported channels

A driver reinstall can restore device functionality, but it may not restore hpi_adjust.dll. The old photo suite and the hardware driver are separate components.

Use Windows Update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Open Advanced options.
  5. Select Optional updates, if available.
  6. Expand Driver updates.
  7. Install a driver that clearly matches the HP device.
  8. Restart Windows.

Use Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Right-click the relevant HP device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows after the installation.

If the device is listed with a warning icon:

  1. Right-click the device.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Read the status shown under the General tab.
  4. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
  5. Use Uninstall Device only when you have a supported replacement driver ready.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Install the driver from Windows Update or the official HP product page.

When manually hunting through model-specific driver packages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; the scan shows the findings, while installation through the full version is optional, and it will not replace the legacy HP photo suite that owns this DLL.

Do not copy hpi_adjust.dll into System32 or SysWOW64

System32 and SysWOW64 are not general-purpose DLL drop locations.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 primarily serves 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit compatibility components. The names are confusing, but copying an application DLL into either directory can create path conflicts and does not provide the application’s other required files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use manual copying only in this narrow situation:

  • You have the exact original file from the same HP product’s trusted installation media or verified backup.
  • The file’s original application directory is known.
  • The calling application specifically expects it there.
  • You restore the complete package or at least its matching surrounding files.

If the application asks for a DLL from its own folder, restore it to that application folder. Do not copy it into both Windows system directories.

Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair

regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that hpi_adjust.dll is an ActiveX or COM component requiring registration.

Therefore, do not run this as a routine fix:

regsvr32 hpi_adjust.dll

If an official HP installer specifically instructs you to register a file, use the installer’s documented path and architecture. Otherwise, errors such as entry point not found or module failed to load usually point to a mismatched DLL, missing dependency, wrong architecture, or an incompatible application.

What different error messages mean

“The program can’t start because hpi_adjust.dll is missing”

The file is absent from the location where the application expects it. Repair or reinstall the complete HP application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The specified module could not be found”

The named DLL may exist, but Windows may be unable to load one of its dependencies. Reinstall the HP package rather than adding unrelated runtime files manually.

“Entry point not found”

The DLL and the application may be from different releases. Replace the mismatched installation with one complete, matching HP package.

“Not designed to run on Windows”

The file may be damaged, the wrong architecture, incompatible with the application, or unsafe. Do not bypass the message with a random download. Remove and reinstall the trusted HP package.

“Cannot register hpi_adjust.dll”

This does not establish that registration is required. Treat it as a sign that regsvr32 may be the wrong tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET repairs relevant?

There is no verified evidence that Visual C++ Redistributable packages, DirectX, or .NET are the primary fix for this particular HP DLL.

Install or repair one of those runtimes only if the HP application’s official installer separately reports that dependency. Do not install random runtime packages just because a DLL error appears.

When to stop repairing the DLL

Stop troubleshooting hpi_adjust.dll as an isolated file when:

  • The HP suite cannot install on your Windows version.
  • HP provides only an in-box driver for the device.
  • The application fails even after a complete reinstall.
  • The printer works through Windows but the old photo software does not.
  • The installer requires obsolete components that modern Windows rejects.
  • Antivirus continues to identify the restored file.
  • The original media and file provenance cannot be verified.

At that point, remove the obsolete application and keep the supported printer or scanner driver. For a program you still need, run the old HP suite in a compatible older Windows environment rather than modifying system folders on your current installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FAQ

Is hpi_adjust.dll a Windows file?

No evidence supports that conclusion. It is associated with legacy HP Photo Printing and HP Photo and Imaging software, not with the normal Windows component store.

Which HP product installed it?

The filename alone cannot identify one exact model. Historical associations include older PSC, Deskjet, Photosmart, and Scanjet software packages. Check the program named in the error and your installed HP applications.

Is it part of HP Album Printing?

It may belong to the same older HP photo and imaging ecosystem. Treat the exact product relationship as installation-specific and repair the complete HP package rather than replacing the DLL alone.

Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Historical reports identify it as a 32-bit component. Verify the actual copy you possess, because files from different releases should not be assumed identical. A 64-bit Windows computer can run a 32-bit HP application, but it still needs matching application files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Restore it to the original HP application directory through a complete repair or reinstall. Arbitrary system-folder copying can create conflicts and does not repair missing dependencies.

Will SFC restore it?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while hpi_adjust.dll is an HP application DLL.

Can I download the DLL separately?

Do not use random DLL download websites. No official standalone HP download for this DLL has been verified. Use original HP media, a trusted backup, or the official HP product-support package.

Why did the error start after reinstalling the printer driver?

The printer driver and the old HP photo suite may be separate packages. A driver reinstall can restore printing without restoring the photo application files that include hpi_adjust.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error appears at startup but not when I open the printer program?

A leftover HP startup helper may be calling the DLL. Check Task Manager > Startup apps and the installed HP programs, then repair or remove the obsolete package responsible.

What is the safest final fix?

Identify the calling HP application, repair or reinstall that complete package from trusted HP media or support resources, and use the supported Windows driver or a replacement application if the old suite no longer runs.
