Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, note:
- Which program, game, installer, or launcher shows the error
- Whether one application fails or several unrelated programs fail
- The exact message, such as “usp10.dll was not found” or “not designed to run on Windows”
- Whether the problem began after a Windows update, application update, antivirus scan, cleanup, crash, or failed reinstall
- Whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether Windows itself opens normally
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The scope matters. If only one older program fails, repair or reinstall that program first. If several programs fail, or Windows displays the message, repair Windows components before replacing anything manually.
What is usp10.dll?
usp10.dll is Microsoft Uniscribe, the Unicode and complex-script text-processing component used by Windows applications. It supports tasks including script itemization, glyph shaping, bidirectional text, line breaking, and advanced typography. Microsoft documents Usp10.dll as the implementation DLL for the Uniscribe APIs in usp10.h.
It is primarily a Windows component, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX runtime, or .NET runtime file. Some older programs and games can also include a private copy in their own installation directory.
Microsoft has historically distributed Uniscribe with Windows and, on older systems, through Internet Explorer. Current Windows versions maintain the system component through Windows Update and normal Windows servicing.

Where Windows normally stores it
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
%WinDir%System32for the 64-bit system copy%WinDir%SysWOW64for the 32-bit system copy
These names are counterintuitive. System32 contains 64-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit binaries.
Do not copy a file between these folders simply because the error mentions a missing DLL. Windows uses architecture-aware redirection and application-specific loading rules. A 32-bit program needs a compatible 32-bit DLL, and a 64-bit program needs a compatible 64-bit DLL.
Microsoft security bulletins show that Uniscribe has had separate builds for different architectures and Windows releases. File versions and sizes therefore vary by Windows build, language, architecture, servicing branch, and application packaging. A version that is correct for one computer is not automatically correct for another.
What the error messages mean
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because USP10.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because usp10.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading usp10.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “There was a problem starting usp10.dll.”
- “usp10.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are loader or application messages. They do not identify a missing Visual C++ package or prove that a particular Microsoft runtime installer is required.
“Missing” or “not found” can mean that the expected file is absent, inaccessible, damaged, the wrong architecture, or that a dependency of the DLL cannot be loaded. “Not designed to run on Windows” commonly indicates a corrupted, incompatible, or incorrectly replaced file. “The specified module could not be found” can also refer to a dependency rather than the named DLL itself.
Fix 1: Repair the affected application first
Use this fix when only one program or game fails and other applications work normally.
Repair an installed Windows application
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The Repair option normally preserves the application and its user data. If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.
Some desktop applications do not provide these options. In that case:
- Close the application and its launcher.
- Open the program’s official installer or vendor launcher.
- Choose Repair, Modify, Verify, or Reinstall, depending on what it offers.
- Restart Windows after the process completes.
- Test the original shortcut again.
For a game launcher, use its file-verification feature rather than downloading an individual DLL. In Epic Games Launcher, for example, open Library, select the three dots beside the game, choose Manage, and select Verify. Verification replaces damaged or different game files without normally affecting saved data.
If the program started failing immediately after you copied usp10.dll into its folder, remove that unofficial copy and reinstall or verify the application. The application directory is searched before some system locations, so a private DLL can override the Windows copy.
When reinstalling is the definitive fix
Reinstall the application from its official vendor source when:

- The error affects only that application
- Repair and file verification do not restore it
- The application includes its own DLLs
- The program was interrupted during an update
- Antivirus removed a file from the application directory
- The application is old and may require a specific 32-bit build
Do not assume that reinstalling the application will repair a damaged Windows copy used by many other programs. If several applications fail, continue with the Windows repair steps below.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 2: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave protected components damaged or unavailable.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Test the affected program.
If the computer has pending updates that repeatedly fail, do not keep replacing DLLs manually. Windows servicing is the supported way to restore system components and their matching dependencies.
Fix 3: Run DISM, then System File Checker
This is the main repair sequence when multiple programs fail or when usp10.dll is missing from a Windows system location.
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses, and SFC then checks and replaces damaged protected system files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOpen an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Press Enter and wait for it to finish. The process can appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window just because the percentage stops changing temporarily.
When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected application.
How to interpret the result
A successful SFC result usually says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. In either case, restart and test the program.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them:

Repeating SFC without repairing the component store first often leaves the same damaged source in place.
Outbyte PC Repair can make this manual process easier by scanning for system problems and showing what needs attention instead of leaving you to guess which repair step changed the result. Its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required when DISM and SFC solve the problem.
Fix 4: Check antivirus Protection History
If the error appeared immediately after a security scan, Windows Security may have quarantined the file or the application’s private copy.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand a detection related to the affected program or
usp10.dll. - Confirm the original file path and the detection details.
Do not automatically restore the file. Restore or allow it only after confirming:
- The original path belongs to the expected Windows or application directory
- The file came from Microsoft or the application’s official vendor
- The file has a valid digital signature
- The detection is a false positive rather than a malicious file placed beside the program
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can expose the computer. If the file was in a suspicious temporary folder, a user-download directory, or an unexpected application folder, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
If the file belongs to a legitimate application, reinstall or verify that application instead of restoring an untrusted copy.

Fix 5: Check the application architecture
A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows may need a 32-bit private copy of usp10.dll. A 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit replacement.
To identify the likely architecture:
- Check the application vendor’s system requirements.
- Look in the application’s installation directory for separate
x86,x64, orWin32folders. - Check whether the installer offers separate builds.
- Use the vendor’s repair or reinstall process to restore the correct files.
Do not copy a file from %WinDir%System32 into a 32-bit program directory, or from %WinDir%SysWOW64 into a 64-bit program directory. Do not use an old Windows file version as a substitute for a current system component.
If one older program fails while newer applications work, an incompatible application-private DLL is more likely than a missing Windows-wide component. Reinstall the correct application build.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for usp10.dll
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Uniscribe is an API and runtime DLL, not a COM component that users repair by registering it.

Do not run:
regsvr32 usp10.dll
This does not replace a missing file, repair corruption, correct architecture, or restore a damaged component store. It may produce an error that obscures the original problem.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or the application’s repair process instead.

Fix 7: Check Windows Features only when the application requires one
usp10.dll is not normally restored by enabling a random Windows optional feature. Windows Features can help when the failing program explicitly requires an older Windows component, legacy compatibility feature, or a framework that was disabled, but they are not a general DLL repair method.
To review optional features:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the listed features.
- Enable only a feature required by the application’s documented requirements.
- Select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable unrelated legacy components merely because an error names usp10.dll. If the program is old, check its vendor documentation and use its installer or compatibility guidance.
Fix 8: Update drivers only when the failing program identifies a driver package
A graphics, printer, or other driver package can include an application-specific copy of a DLL, but reinstalling a graphics driver is not the normal repair for the Windows usp10.dll.
Use Device Manager only when the error clearly points to a vendor utility, control panel, printer package, or graphics application.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Print queues.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- If the issue began after a driver update, open Properties, select the Driver tab, and review whether Roll Back Driver is available.
For a clean repair, download the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update. Do not use a driver package to replace a Windows system DLL.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking many device entries and matching driver versions; its free scan shows what is outdated, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and a driver update will not fix every usp10.dll error.

Fix 11: Reinstall Windows components without removing your files
On supported Windows 11 installations, Windows Update may offer a repair reinstall:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart and test the application.
Microsoft describes this process as reinstalling the current Windows version while repairing system files and components and preserving apps, files, and settings.
If that option is unavailable or does not solve the problem, use matching Windows installation media and choose the in-place repair option that keeps personal files and apps. Back up your data first and follow Microsoft’s installation instructions carefully.
Safe sources for usp10.dll
For a Windows system copy, use:
- Windows Update
- DISM and SFC
- A supported Windows repair reinstall
- Matching Windows installation media during an in-place repair
For an application-private copy, use:
- The application’s official installer
- The official game launcher’s verification feature
- The application’s Repair or Reinstall option
Avoid generic DLL download sites. A downloaded file can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be from the wrong Windows servicing branch, lack a valid signature, or create a DLL-preloading risk. It may also hide the actual problem, such as application corruption or a failing disk.
Do not overwrite %WinDir%System32 or %WinDir%SysWOW64 manually unless you are performing an advanced recovery with a matching Windows source and understand the architecture involved.
Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET installers are generally not the correct remedy for a missing Windows Uniscribe component. Install them only when the application separately reports a missing dependency from one of those runtimes.

FAQ
Is usp10.dll a Windows file?
Yes. It is Microsoft Uniscribe, a Windows text-processing component. Applications may also include a private copy, so the correct repair depends on whether one application or the whole system is affected.
Should I download usp10.dll?
No. There is no current universal standalone Microsoft DLL download recommended for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Use Windows servicing for the system copy and the application’s official installer for a private copy.
Is usp10.dll part of Office?
It can be used by applications, including Microsoft software, but it is not principally an Office-only file. It is a Microsoft Windows component that provides Uniscribe APIs.

Usually not. usp10.dll is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file. Repair Windows or the individual application based on the scope of the failure.
Should I run regsvr32 usp10.dll?
No. regsvr32 is for registerable DLL components. It is not a repair method for Uniscribe.
Why do System32 and SysWOW64 seem reversed?
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system binaries and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit binaries. The names come from Windows compatibility architecture and should not be used as a guide for manual copying.
What is the quickest safe fix?
If one program fails, repair or verify that program. If several programs fail, install Windows updates, run DISM, then run SFC and restart. These steps address the most likely causes without introducing an untrusted replacement DLL.
