“This application failed to start because hpofax08.dll was not found.” The hpofax08.dll error usually points to a damaged or incomplete legacy HP OfficeJet installation, not a missing Windows system file.
Which fix applies to you
Start with the situation that matches what you see:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The error appears when opening HP software, scanning, printing, or faxing: uninstall and reinstall the complete HP package for the exact printer model.
- The error started after removing the printer or HP software: remove the leftover HP application or startup entry instead of downloading the DLL.
- The error began after antivirus detected a file: inspect Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- The HP installer fails or reports an incompatible operating system: check whether the older OfficeJet package supports Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Several Windows programs are also failing: repair Windows with DISM and System File Checker, then reinstall the HP package.
- The dialog says “specified module could not be found”: the DLL may exist, but another dependency required by it may be missing.
- You only see “Cannot register hpofax08.dll”: do not keep running
regsvr32. This type of printer component may not be designed for manual registration.
What hpofax08.dll is
hpofax08.dll is identified as the HPOJFax Module, a component associated with HP OfficeJet software. It belongs to the application layer used by older HP multifunction printers and fax packages.

- Convenient, easy-to-operate faxing
- Black-and-white copying with up to 400 x 400 dpi resolution
- 9,600 BPS fax modem transmits at about 15 seconds per page
- 512 KB memory stores up to 25 pages
- 50-Sheet paper capacity
Public file metadata identifies it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. That does not identify the exact printer model, official package version, or a safe replacement file. Historical HP software trees placed similar components in printer-package directories such as driverscom_lang, alongside other files needed by the HP installation.
The filename alone cannot tell you which OfficeJet model originally installed it. The correct repair therefore depends on the exact printer model, the Windows version, and whether fax functionality is part of the installed package.
Messages you may see
Reported messages include:
- “This application failed to start because hpofax08.dll was not found.”
- “The file hpofax08.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: hpofax08.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading hpofax08.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because hpofax08.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Failed to load hpofax08.dll.”
- “Cannot register hpofax08.dll.”
The wording matters. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent. Windows can display that message when a dependency loaded by the DLL cannot be found.

Note which program produces the dialog. It may be an HP setup program, HP Digital Imaging or Solution Center software, a fax utility, or an obsolete startup entry that remains after the printer was removed.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete HP OfficeJet package
This is the most likely solution because the DLL normally needs companion files, configuration entries, and HP components around it. Replacing only one file often leaves the same failure in place.
Remove the damaged installation
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if the HP installer previously required that.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps and features.
- Search for entries containing HP OfficeJet, HP Digital Imaging, HP Printer Software, or the printer’s model name.
- Select the entry, choose the three-dot menu, and select Uninstall.
- Follow the HP removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. On Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the old printer and choose Remove if it remains listed.
You can also use the older Control Panel route:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Remove the HP OfficeJet software from Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
Install the correct package
- Open HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Enter the exact OfficeJet model, including any suffix or regional variation.
- Select the installed Windows version and architecture.
- Choose the full feature driver or full solution package when HP provides one.
- Run the downloaded installer as administrator.
- Reconnect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Print a test page and open the HP fax or scanning function if those features are required.
A full-feature package includes the printer driver and management software that basic drivers may omit. For older OfficeJet packages, fax functionality may be installed as a separate part of the package. If you install only a basic print driver, hpofax08.dll may not be included because the fax software is not being installed.
How to tell whether it worked
The repair succeeded if:
- HP software opens without the DLL dialog.
- Windows can print a test page.
- Scanning or fax features open normally when supported.
- The error does not return after restarting Windows.
If the installer says that the printer is unsupported, do not force an unrelated package. Continue to the compatibility section below.

Fix 2: Check the package architecture
Do not assume that a 64-bit version of Windows requires every installed DLL to be 64-bit. Older HP software can contain 32-bit components and run through the appropriate compatibility layers.
Public metadata identifies hpofax08.dll as a 32-bit Win32 module. It does not verify a safe x64 build. An unrelated 64-bit DLL with the same filename is not a valid repair.
When selecting the HP package:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System > About.
- Check System type.
- Return to the HP driver page.
- Select the exact Windows release and matching architecture offered for the printer.
- Install the full package rather than mixing an old fax component with a newer basic printer driver.
If the package offers separate x86 and x64 installers, use the installer that matches the package guidance and your Windows installation. Do not combine individual files from separate packages.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine an old printer component, particularly after a scan or a major Windows update. Treat a quarantined copy carefully because restoring an arbitrary file can reintroduce a real threat.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand events related to
hpofax08.dll, HP software, or the printer installation. - Check the detected file path and the detection name.
- If the path is not inside the expected HP installation, do not restore the file.
- If the file came from the official HP installer and the detection is clearly a false positive, follow your organization’s security policy before allowing it.
- Otherwise, remove the old HP installation and reinstall it from HP’s official support page.
If Windows Security detects the file again immediately after installation, do not repeatedly restore it. Record the detection details and use the current supported HP package instead.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components, then reinstall HP software
DISM and SFC repair Windows component corruption. They do not normally recreate a third-party HP DLL, so use them to rule out operating-system damage rather than expecting them to supply hpofax08.dll.
Run Windows Update first
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Run DISM
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows, then reinstall the correct HP OfficeJet package if the DLL error remains.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the HP application again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Do not keep repeating the commands indefinitely without checking the HP installation itself.
When manually comparing Windows component versions, locating the actual damaged dependency can become tedious, especially if several repairs have already changed the system. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problem and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling the HP OfficeJet program remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall the printer driver
A driver change can leave an old HP utility pointing to files that are no longer installed. The safest route is to remove the old HP software and install the current driver offered for the exact model.
Remove the printer device
- Press Windows + I.
- Open Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
For Windows 10, use Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Imaging devices.
- Right-click an obsolete HP entry and select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the model-specific HP package.
Do not uninstall unrelated display, chipset, storage, or network devices while searching for the printer. hpofax08.dll is associated with HP OfficeJet software, not a general Windows hardware driver.
Finding the right legacy driver manually can mean checking model revisions, architecture, and compatibility one package at a time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers and show the available repair path; the full version performs driver installation, while the exact HP package is still required for this application-specific fax component.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
Use System Restore if the error began immediately after uninstalling HP software, changing drivers, installing an update, or restoring a backup.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if that option appears.
- Choose a restore point from before the error started.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can roll back installed programs, drivers, registry settings, and system files. It does not normally remove personal documents or photos. After the restore, test the HP application and reinstall the printer package if necessary.

Fix 7: Remove a stale startup entry
If you removed the printer months ago but the error appears only when Windows starts, the problem may be a leftover HP application rather than an actively used printer.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an HP entry associated with the old OfficeJet software.
- Right-click it and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Then remove the associated HP software from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features. Do not delete random DLL files or registry entries simply because their names contain hpofax08.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the registration entry points used by OLE and ActiveX components. It is not a universal command for repairing every DLL.
If an HP document for the exact printer package specifically instructs you to register a component, use the command from that document and match the command prompt architecture to the component. Otherwise, do not run:
regsvr32 hpofax08.dll
A failure such as “entry point DllRegisterServer was not found” means the DLL is not self-registering in the way regsvr32 expects. It does not prove that the file is bad.

The same applies to “specified module could not be found.” The missing item may be a dependency loaded by the HP component, so registering the named file would not solve the underlying problem.
If the old OfficeJet package will not install
Some older OfficeJet software was designed for earlier Windows releases and may not support Windows 10 or Windows 11. In that situation:
- Confirm the exact printer model.
- Check HP’s current support page for a Windows 10 or Windows 11 package.
- Install the current supported driver if one exists.
- If HP provides no full package, try the Windows built-in printer driver for basic printing.
- Add the printer through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device.
- Do not expect the legacy fax utility or
hpofax08.dllto be included in a modern basic driver.
A current printer driver can restore printing while leaving older fax or scanning utilities unavailable. If the old application is essential and no supported package exists, the limitation is compatibility rather than a missing Windows DLL.
Avoid standalone DLL downloads
Do not download hpofax08.dll from a random DLL repository and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. A same-named file can have the wrong architecture, exports, dependencies, or origin, and replacing one file does not recreate the HP package that uses it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe safe source is the official HP support page for the exact OfficeJet model. Install the complete package so Windows receives the related files, services, configuration, and printer driver together.

Information to collect if the error remains
If reinstalling the correct package does not work, record:
- The exact HP OfficeJet model.
- Windows edition, version, and system type.
- The complete error text.
- The executable named in the dialog.
- Whether the error appears during startup, printing, scanning, or faxing.
- The full path Windows reports for
hpofax08.dll. - Whether Windows Security quarantined the file.
- Whether the error started after an update, uninstall, backup restore, or driver change.
That information distinguishes a missing HP component from a dependency failure, a stale startup entry, an unsupported printer package, or a security event.
FAQ
Is hpofax08.dll part of Windows?
No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows system file. It is associated with HP OfficeJet software.
Which printer model uses it?
The filename alone does not identify an exact OfficeJet model. Use the printer model shown on the device or in Windows and obtain the matching HP package.
Is hpofax08.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public metadata identifies it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. Do not use an unverified x64 copy as a replacement.
Can I fix it by copying the file into System32?
No. That can create an architecture or dependency mismatch and leaves the HP installation incomplete.
Will SFC restore hpofax08.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not third-party HP application files. Reinstall the correct HP package after checking Windows integrity.

A dependency loaded by hpofax08.dll may be missing. Reinstalling the complete HP package is safer than replacing the named file alone.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Usually no. Use regsvr32 only when HP documentation for that specific component explicitly requires registration.
What if I no longer own the printer?
Uninstall the leftover HP software and disable its obsolete startup entry. A startup warning from abandoned software does not mean Windows needs the DLL.
