If Windows reports that hpohrl05.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the problem usually belongs to old HP printer software rather than Windows itself. The message may appear as “The program can’t start because hpohrl05.dll is missing from your computer,” “Error loading hpohrl05.dll,” or “The specified module could not be found.”
The 60-second answer
hpohrl05.dll is an obscure legacy file associated by third-party file records with HP Printing System for Windows and HP DeskJet Printing System for Windows. It is not reliably identified as a Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, game file, or modern universal printer driver.
The safest repair is to identify the HP printer software that requested the file, then repair or reinstall the complete package for that exact printer model. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random DLL website or copy it into System32. That can introduce malware, use the wrong architecture, and leave the damaged HP installation untouched.
If the printer is no longer used, remove the obsolete HP software or stale startup entry instead of restoring the file.

Why the error appears
The file is probably being requested by an old HP component during startup, printer setup, or a background software check. Common triggers include:
- An incomplete HP printer-software uninstall
- An HP driver update that removed or replaced part of the package
- Upgrading Windows while retaining old DeskJet software
- Antivirus quarantine
- Disk cleanup or manual deletion of an HP folder
- Restoring an old system image
- Removing the printer while leaving its support software installed
- A missing dependency of the HP DLL
- A stale startup shortcut, scheduled task, or service
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that hpohrl05.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load another file that it depends on.
Third-party records commonly describe an approximately 8-KB file and report a version such as 2000.1109.126.0. Other records disagree about whether the file is 32-bit or x64. Treat those details as identification clues, not as a specification for a replacement download.
First, identify what is launching it
Before reinstalling anything, find the process or startup entry requesting the file.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and the text around the error. Note whether the message appears when you:
- Sign in to Windows
- Open a printer utility
- Print from a particular application
- Connect the printer
- Start an HP control panel or status monitor
If the error names an HP utility or a printer model, record it. That is more useful than the DLL filename alone.
Check startup applications
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries containing HP, Hewlett-Packard, DeskJet, Imaging, or Printer.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location, if available.
- If it points to a missing HP folder, right-click it and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If the error disappears and the printer is no longer used, uninstall the associated HP software. Disabling a stale entry prevents the message but does not remove the underlying package.
Check installed applications and printers
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for HP-related entries. Also open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and note the exact printer model.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the exact HP package
Use this path when the printer still matters.
Remove the damaged installation
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable. If it is a network printer, leave it disconnected from Windows during the software cleanup.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for HP printer software, HP imaging software, or a package named for the printer.
- Select the entry, choose the three-dot menu, and select Uninstall.
- Follow the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
For older packages that do not appear cleanly in Settings, open Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program and remove the relevant HP entries there.
Then remove the printer:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows again.
Install the correct package
- Go to HP’s official support site manually.
- Search for the exact printer model, including its series number.
- Select the Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition that is actually installed.
- Download the complete driver and software package, not an isolated DLL.
- Run the installer as administrator by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Print a test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > your printer > Print a test page.
HP may not provide the original software for every legacy printer and operating-system combination. If the model has no compatible package, Windows may still print through a built-in class driver, but the old HP status utility or scanner features may remain unavailable.
For the least troublesome result, match both the printer model and Windows architecture. A 32-bit legacy component should not be copied into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64; those directories serve different roles on 64-bit Windows. Let the official installer place files where they belong.

Reinstalling the exact HP package remains the definitive fix when hpohrl05.dll belongs to that package.
How to tell whether it worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The startup or application error no longer appears.
- The HP utility opens normally.
- Windows detects the printer without repeatedly installing it.
- A test page prints.
- The error does not return after another restart.
If the same error returns immediately, you probably installed the wrong model’s software, retained a stale startup reference, or have a missing dependency rather than simply a missing DLL.
Fix 2: Remove obsolete HP software instead
Use this route when the printer is gone, replaced, or no longer needed.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall HP printer utilities and software associated with the old device.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove the old printer.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps and disable any remaining HP entry that points to the removed installation.
- Restart Windows.
If a service or scheduled task continues to call the file, open the Services app or Task Scheduler and inspect only entries clearly tied to the old HP package. Do not delete a service merely because its name contains a generic printer term. If you cannot identify the owner, leave it disabled temporarily and check whether the error stops before removing anything.

When the error occurs only during boot and the printer is no longer present, removing the obsolete reference is safer than downloading a replacement DLL.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined the file.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
hpohrl05.dllor the HP installer. - Expand the entry and review its path, detection, and action.
Only restore or allow the file if you can verify that it came from the original HP installer or a trusted backup and the detection is confirmed to be false. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can expose the computer if it was genuinely malicious.

hpohrl05.dll appears to be third-party, so System File Checker will not normally recreate it. Run Windows repair commands when you also see damaged Windows features, update failures, unexplained system-file errors, or other built-in components malfunctioning.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft’s guidance covers DISM and System File Checker.
A message saying that Windows repaired corrupt files indicates progress, but it does not prove that the HP DLL was restored. Test the original printer application afterward. If only the HP error remains, return to the model-specific package repair.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of repeating DISM and SFC less guess-based by showing detected system problems in its free scan; repairs are performed by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the HP software that owns hpohrl05.dll.
Fix 5: Use System Restore for a recent change
If the error began immediately after a driver update, software removal, or Windows change, System Restore may return the HP installation to an earlier working state.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Choose a different restore point, if offered.
- Pick a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review what will be removed or reverted.
- Start the restore and let Windows restart.
System Restore can undo later application and system changes, so back up important work first. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
Running this against a private HP printer-support library can produce errors such as “The module was loaded but the entry point was not found.” It will not recreate a deleted file, install a missing dependency, or repair an incomplete HP package.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use regsvr32 only when the vendor’s documentation specifically instructs you to register that exact file. Otherwise, repair the complete HP installation.

Avoid manual DLL downloads
Do not search for hpohrl05.dll on a DLL download sites site and copy the result into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An unrelated application folder
That approach risks malware, a mismatched build, the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, and DLL hijacking. It can also hide the real problem: a stale startup item, incomplete uninstall, missing dependency, or incompatible legacy package.
The safe sources are the original HP installer, a verified backup of the old HP installation, or a trusted Windows restore point. Even then, restoring a standalone file is a fallback, not the preferred repair.

Is hpohrl05.dll part of Windows?
There is no reliable evidence that it ships with Windows. Available identification records associate it with legacy HP printing software.
Which HP printer installed it?
An exact printer model cannot be confirmed from the filename alone. Several old HP packages may have used related components. Identify the installed printer and the HP software name before choosing a replacement package.
Is it a 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Third-party records disagree. Do not assume the architecture from a web listing. Verify the actual file from a trusted HP package or inspect its properties.
Does reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
There is no verified evidence connecting hpohrl05.dll to those runtimes. Repair the HP printer package first. Investigate dependencies only if the correct HP installer is present and Windows still reports that a module cannot be found.
Can I keep printing without the HP software?
Possibly. Windows may use a built-in printer driver, but advanced HP utilities, scanning features, or status monitoring may not work. Test printing after removing the old package.
What if the HP installer does not support Windows 10 or 11?
Use Windows’ built-in printer setup if it supports the device. If the old utility is no longer compatible and the printer is obsolete, remove the legacy software and its startup references rather than forcing a DLL into Windows folders.
