Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, record:
- Which program shows the error: a Lexmark printer utility, scanner program, status monitor, or another application.
- When it appears: at Windows sign-in, when opening the utility, or when printing or scanning.
- What changed: a Lexmark update, failed installation, antivirus alert, cleanup, or Windows upgrade.
- Your Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type.
- The complete message: common examples include “lxa3comc.dll is missing,” “was not found,” “Error loading lxa3comc.dll,” or “The specified module could not be found.”
lxa3comc.dll is not a normal Windows component. Public file metadata describes it as part of Lexmark Communication System, but the exact Lexmark printer model, driver release, installation folder, and file version are not confirmed by a current official Lexmark manifest.
The safest repair is therefore to restore the Lexmark printer or scanner package that originally installed the file. Do not begin by downloading a DLL into System32.
What lxa3comc.dll is
The filename is associated with a Lexmark application or driver component rather than Windows itself. It is commonly classified as a Win32 or 32-bit component, although you should match the complete Lexmark package to the application and Windows installation instead of relying on the filename alone.
The error does not necessarily mean that the DLL itself was deleted. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that lxa3comc.dll is present but one of its dependencies is missing or damaged.

The problem often begins after:
- Removing or updating Lexmark software
- A failed printer-driver installation
- Antivirus quarantine
- Disk cleanup or manual deletion
- Migrating from an older Windows installation
- Installing a package with the wrong architecture
- Opening an old Lexmark utility that is no longer compatible with the current Windows release
Fix 1: Repair the Lexmark application
This is the fastest safe fix when the error appears while opening a Lexmark utility.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the Lexmark printer, scanner, status monitor, or communication utility.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and open the Lexmark program again.
The Repair option may not appear for traditional desktop installers. If it does not, continue with a reinstall rather than copying the DLL manually.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the Lexmark program.
- Choose Advanced options if displayed.
- Select Repair.
- Restart and test the printer or scanner utility.
If the error disappears, the program was able to restore or correctly locate its supporting files. If the error remains, uninstall the damaged package and install a fresh copy.
Fix 2: Reinstall the complete Lexmark package
A full package reinstall is usually more reliable than replacing one missing file because it restores the DLL, its dependencies, services, shortcuts, and registry settings together.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Remove the Lexmark printer software, scanner software, status monitor, and related utilities.
- If the package is not listed, open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Uninstall the Lexmark entries shown there.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Lexmark’s official Drivers & Downloads page.
- Search for the exact printer or multifunction-device model.
- Select the package for your Windows edition and architecture.
- Download the complete driver or software installer, not an isolated DLL.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts and connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows again.
Test by opening the Lexmark utility and printing a test page. For a multifunction device, test scanning as well.
If the installer offers separate 32-bit and 64-bit packages, select the one matching the operating system and the supported application. A 32-bit application can still require a 32-bit dependency on 64-bit Windows. Do not copy the file into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64; those folders serve different purposes, and random copying can make troubleshooting harder.

Fix 3: Update or reinstall the printer driver
Use this step when the error appears during printing, scanning, or communication with the device rather than when opening the utility.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Imaging devices.
- Find the Lexmark device.
- Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
Windows may not find the complete Lexmark package through Device Manager. If the update does not resolve the error, select Uninstall Device, restart Windows, and install the current model-specific package from Lexmark.

When manually hunting through model pages, architecture choices and older driver generations can be easy to mix up. Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a legitimate Lexmark component after an update or failed installation.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the Lexmark program or
lxa3comc.dll. - Expand the entry and record the original file path.
- Check whether the file was identified as malware, an unwanted application, or a blocked item.
Do not restore the file solely because its name looks familiar. Confirm that the original path belongs to the Lexmark installation and check the file’s publisher or digital signature when available. If the detection is uncertain, contact Lexmark or your security-software vendor before allowing it.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other files are failing
A missing Lexmark DLL does not by itself prove that Windows is corrupted. Use Windows repair commands when you also see unrelated missing system files, broken Windows features, update failures, or repeated application errors.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. These commands repair protected Windows components; they do not reinstall a missing Lexmark-owned DLL. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the two commands again before returning to the Lexmark package repair.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can waste time during a driver problem. Fix 6: Check compatibility and recent changes
If the error appears only when opening an old printer utility, the utility may be obsolete even though the printer still works with a newer driver.
Try these steps:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove the obsolete Lexmark utility.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current package for the exact printer model.
- If no current utility supports your Windows release, use the basic printer driver or Windows-supported printing option where available.
If the problem began immediately after a driver or software update, System Restore may help:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Next > Finish.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs without changing personal documents. It does not replace a proper Lexmark reinstall when the installation itself is damaged.
Do not register or download the DLL blindly
regsvr32 is normally used for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A runtime or driver-support DLL may not provide that function. Running:

regsvr32 lxa3comc.dll
will commonly produce an error stating that the entry point was not found, and it will not restore a damaged Lexmark installation.
Avoid generic DLL download pages as well. A manually downloaded file may contain malware, be the wrong version, use the wrong architecture, lack required dependencies, or simply fail to match the program that requested it. Putting it in System32 can also mask the real installation problem and create new conflicts.
Use the official Lexmark driver and software installer for the exact printer model. Use Microsoft’s repair tools only for Windows component problems, not as a substitute for reinstalling the Lexmark package.

Collect this information before contacting Lexmark support:
- Exact printer or multifunction-device model
- Name of the program showing the error
- Complete error text
- Full path where
lxa3comc.dllis expected or found - Windows edition and build
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the file is listed in Windows Security Protection history
- What happened after uninstalling and reinstalling the official package
If the file exists but Windows says it is “not designed to run on Windows,” suspect corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a missing dependency. If many unrelated DLL errors appear, prioritize Windows Security scans and DISM/SFC. If only one old Lexmark utility fails, replace or remove that utility rather than changing Windows system folders.

Is lxa3comc.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence indicates that it ships with Windows. Treat it as a Lexmark application or driver component installed by the program that needs it.
