Why Windows cannot load hporsa05.dll
The most likely causes are:
- An HP printer installation was damaged or only partly removed.
- An old HP component was deleted during disk cleanup.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- A Windows upgrade left an incompatible DeskJet package behind.
- The printer software was moved or deleted without being uninstalled.
- A stale startup entry still points to an old HP installation.
- The DLL exists, but one of its dependencies is missing.
- The HP package does not match the printer or current Windows architecture.
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may find hporsa05.dll but fail to load a dependency required by it. Reinstalling the complete HP package is therefore more reliable than replacing one file.
Fix 1: Rebuild the HP printer installation
This is the best first repair.
1. Record the printer and program
Before removing anything, write down:
- The exact HP printer model
- The full error message
- The application or executable named in the message
- Whether the error appears when printing, at sign-in, or during startup
- Whether the printer is connected by USB, Wi-Fi, or a print server
If you no longer use the printer, note that too. A startup error from a retired printer may need cleanup rather than reinstallation.
2. Disconnect the printer
Turn off the printer and unplug its USB cable. If it is networked, leave it disconnected from the computer during the software removal.

This prevents Windows from immediately rediscovering the device while its old software is being removed.
3. Uninstall HP software
In Windows 11 or Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for entries beginning with HP, Hewlett-Packard, or the printer model.
- Uninstall the HP printer application and related software.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows when it asks you to.
If the HP entry is not listed, open Control Panel:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Remove the HP printer software from Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove unrelated HP utilities unless you know they belong to this printer installation.
4. Remove the printer device
After restarting:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the old HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, select the printer, and choose Remove device.
5. Install the correct HP package
Use HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page. Search by the exact printer model, select the installed Windows version, and download the newest available full-feature or basic driver package.

Install the package with the printer still disconnected unless the installer specifically requests that you connect it. Restart again when installation finishes, then reconnect or power on the printer.
How to confirm this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The original error no longer appears.
- The printer is listed under Printers & scanners.
- Windows can print a test page.
- The HP application opens without reporting
hporsa05.dll. - No old HP startup error appears after the next sign-in.
If the same error returns immediately, note the executable path shown in the message. It may be a leftover startup item rather than the active printer software.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
If the problem began after antivirus software detected or removed a file, check whether Windows Security quarantined an HP component.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any entry associated with the HP installation.
Do not restore an arbitrary DLL simply because its filename is hporsa05.dll. If the file came from an incomplete or unofficial installation, restoring it may leave the damaged package in place.

Fix 3: Remove a stale startup reference
If the HP printer was removed but the message still appears at sign-in, Windows may be trying to start an old HP helper program.
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries containing HP, Hewlett-Packard, or the old printer name.
- Select a clearly related obsolete entry.
- Choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for leftover HP software.

Do not delete registry entries manually based only on the DLL name. A stale reference can belong to a specific HP application, scheduled task, or service, and removing the wrong entry can create another startup problem. If the exact executable is shown in the error, search for that product name rather than searching for the DLL alone.
Fix 4: Install Windows updates and verify drivers
An older HP package may behave differently after a Windows upgrade. First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then check the printer driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected HP device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, return to the HP model-specific package. Do not assume that a generic driver will provide every HP scanning, status, or maintenance feature.

32-bit versus 64-bit Windows
The cataloged hporsa05.dll is reported as a 32-bit file. That does not mean it should be copied into C:WindowsSysWOW64, and it does not mean every 64-bit computer is incompatible.
A 32-bit application can use a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows when the DLL is installed in the application’s expected location. The driver package must supply the correct files and dependencies. Install the package intended for the printer and Windows version instead of choosing a system folder based on its name.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components
Windows component corruption is less likely here because hporsa05.dll belongs to HP software, not a protected Windows component. Run these commands only after rebuilding the HP installation or when other Windows programs also report missing or damaged system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
DISM may report that the restore operation completed successfully. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or could not repair some files. These commands do not reinstall HP printer software, so a clean result does not rule out a damaged HP package. Microsoft’s procedure is documented in its System File Checker guidance.

Do not use regsvr32 as the default fix
A .dll extension does not mean a file should be registered.
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a deleted HP installation, repair a missing dependency, or make an incompatible printer driver work.
If you were specifically instructed by the documented HP package to register a component, use the command and path supplied by that package. Otherwise, do not run:
regsvr32 hporsa05.dll
A message saying that the entry point is missing indicates that the DLL is not intended to be registered that way. It is not a reason to download another copy.
If HP no longer supports the printer
Some old DeskJet models do not have a current package for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Try these steps:
- Remove the damaged HP software as described above.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Allow Windows to search for the printer.
- If it is not found, choose the option to add it manually.
- Select a Windows-provided or matching built-in printer driver when offered.
- Print a test page.
A built-in driver may support printing while omitting HP-specific scanning or maintenance features. If the only available installer is an old CD, use it cautiously and do not assume that it is compatible with the current Windows release.

Random DLL download sites sites may provide a file with the right name but the wrong version, architecture, exports, or contents. A copied file may also fail because the real problem is a missing dependency, damaged driver registration, or an obsolete startup entry.

There is no current official HP download page specifically publishing hporsa05.dll. Obtain it through the complete printer software package from HP, or use a Windows-provided printer driver when HP no longer supports the model.

Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Do not treat the hp prefix as proof that a file is safe. Verify the installer’s source and, where available, its digital signature.
If the error remains
Record these details before contacting support or investigating further:
- Exact error wording
- The executable named in the message
- Full path of
hporsa05.dll, if Windows provides one - HP printer model
- Windows version and system architecture
- Whether the file exists
- Whether the error appears at startup or only during printing
If the file exists but Windows says the module cannot be found, suspect a dependency or incompatible HP package. If the printer has been removed and the error appears only at startup, focus on leftover HP software and startup entries. If reinstalling the correct package does not help, System Restore may reverse a recent driver or software change; open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore, or run rstrui.exe. Is hporsa05.dll part of Windows?
No. Available metadata associates it with legacy HP DeskJet printing software. It should normally arrive with the HP printer package that needs it.
Which HP printer installed it?
The filename alone does not identify an exact printer model. The safest way to determine that is to check the installed HP applications, the printer model, and the executable named in the error.
Will this fix work on Windows 10 and Windows 11?
The uninstall and reinstall process applies to both, but an old HP package may not support a modern Windows release. Use the newest package HP provides and use a built-in Windows driver if the printer is no longer supported.
Should I use a 32-bit or 64-bit copy?
Do not choose a loose DLL by bitness. The reported file is 32-bit, but the correct package must place it with the application and supply its dependencies. A 64-bit version of Windows does not automatically require a 64-bit copy.
Why does the error say the module is missing when the file is present?
