hpoui05.dll errors usually appear as “The program can’t start because hpoui05.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “This application failed to start because hpoui05.dll was not found,” “Error loading hpoui05.dll,” or “Failed to load hpoui05.dll.”
This is normally an old HP printer component, not a Windows gaming file or a Microsoft runtime. The reliable fix is to repair or remove the HP printer software that is requesting it, rather than copying a replacement DLL into a Windows folder.

Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what you are seeing:
- The error appears while printing or opening an HP toolbox: reinstall the printer’s HP driver and utility package.
- The error appears at Windows logon, but the printer was removed: uninstall the obsolete HP utility or disable its leftover startup entry.
- The file disappeared after an antivirus scan: check Windows Security’s Protection history before reinstalling anything.
- The message names another executable: repair the application named in the error.
hpoui05.dllmay only be a dependency. - The printer is very old and HP has no current package: try Windows’ built-in printer driver or a compatible generic driver.
- Several Windows features are also failing: use DISM and SFC after addressing the HP software.
- The file exists but will not load: check whether the HP package is damaged, whether a dependency is missing, or whether an old 32-bit driver is incompatible with the current system.
Before changing anything, write down the complete error-dialog title, the executable named in the message, your printer model, and any path shown in Event Viewer or the dialog. That information identifies the software that actually called the DLL.

What hpoui05.dll belongs to
Public file metadata identifies hpoui05.dll as part of the HP Printing System for Windows or HP DeskJet Printing System for Windows, published by Hewlett-Packard. It belongs to the old software family used by DeskJet printers, rather than to Windows itself.
That package could include:
- The HP ColorSmart printer driver
- The HP DeskJet Status Monitor
- HP printer utilities and toolbox components
- Fonts and installation utilities
The strongest available file inventories describe it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL, with commonly reported metadata including version 2000.1109.126.0 and a size of approximately 418 KiB. Treat those details as historical metadata, not as an official current HP specification.
There is no universal rule that this file belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Older 32-bit printer packages commonly placed files under the print-driver area, including a path resembling:
C:WindowsSystem32spoolDRIVERSW32X863
That is only an example of an old deployment pattern. The correct location depends on the installer and Windows version.
Fix 1: Identify and reinstall the HP printer package
This is the most likely solution when the error appears during printing, at logon after an update, or while opening an HP status monitor.
Find the calling program
- Reproduce the error once.
- Read the full title bar of the dialog.
- Note the executable name, if shown. It may be an HP monitor, toolbox, installer, or another program.
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer and note its exact model.
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for entries containing HP, DeskJet, Printing System, Toolbox, Status Monitor, or the printer model.
- If the dialog gives no useful information, open Event Viewer by right-clicking Start and selecting it. Check Windows Logs > Application for an error recorded at the same time.
The executable and printer model matter because hpoui05.dll was used across an old HP software family. The filename alone does not identify one exact printer.
Remove the damaged HP software
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the HP software associated with the printer.
- Select its three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the HP removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If the program is not listed there, open Control Panel from Start, choose Programs > Programs and Features, select the old HP printing package, and choose Uninstall.

Also remove the old printer if you no longer use it:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Restart the computer.
Install the correct package
Use the printer’s official HP Support page and search by the exact model. Select Windows 10 or Windows 11 as appropriate, then download the complete driver or software package that HP offers for that operating system.
- Run the downloaded HP installer.
- Allow it to make changes if Windows requests administrator approval.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer asks.
- Complete setup.
- Restart Windows.
- Print a test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > your printer > Print test page.
If the error no longer appears and the test page prints, the HP package was the problem. If HP lists no compatible package, do not mix files from another DeskJet model. Continue to the old-printer section below.
Fix 2: Remove an obsolete startup utility
Sometimes the printer has already been removed, but its status monitor still launches with Windows and requests hpoui05.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
First uninstall the associated HP software using the steps above. If the error remains:
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for a clearly identified HP printer monitor or toolbox.
- Right-click it and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Do not disable an unknown entry just because its name looks technical. Check its Open file location or Properties first. If it belongs to an HP utility you no longer use, disabling it is reasonable. If the same message returns, check Task Scheduler for an old HP task and remove it only after confirming its purpose.
If the printer still works and only the toolbox or status monitor is broken, removing that obsolete utility may be preferable to reinstalling the entire legacy suite.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
An antivirus scan can remove or quarantine a legitimate old printer component. This is more plausible when the error began immediately after a security scan.

Restore the file only if you can verify that it came from the original HP installation and the detection is a false positive. A safer choice is to reinstall the HP package from HP Support, which restores the complete set of files and dependencies.
Do not disable antivirus to make a DLL downloaded from an unknown site work. A matching filename does not prove that a file is genuine.
Fix 4: Account for 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Historical metadata describes hpoui05.dll as a 32-bit Win32 file. A 32-bit application can use a 32-bit DLL, but placing that DLL into a random 64-bit system directory will not convert an old HP driver into a compatible modern package.
Check your system type:
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Look at System type under device specifications.
More importantly, select the correct Windows release and architecture in the HP installer. Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32 or `SysWOW64 based on guesswork. Windows uses those directories according to its architecture conventions, and the correct printer-driver location is controlled by the HP installer and print subsystem.

Fix 5: Repair the printer driver through Windows
Windows may have a damaged printer queue or driver package even when the HP application itself appears installed.

- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device and let Windows detect the printer.
- If automatic detection fails, choose the manual-add option and select a compatible built-in driver.
For a current HP package, install the driver from HP Support after removing the old device. Avoid installing several generations of HP software on top of one another because leftover monitors and queues can continue calling the old DLL.
When manually hunting through several driver versions is wasting time, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the issue, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the specific HP printer package remains the definitive fix when hpoui05.dll belongs to that package.

Fix 6: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
SFC is unlikely to restore hpoui05.dll because this file appears to belong to HP software, not protected Windows system files. Use these commands when multiple Windows components are failing, Windows updates are broken, or corruption affects more than the HP utility.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not disprove an HP installation problem. If the commands repair Windows but the HP error remains, reinstall or remove the HP printer software instead.
If repeated manual repair commands are difficult to interpret, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader system issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version. It is not required for this file, and the HP package is still the correct fix for an HP-only failure.
Do not copy hpoui05.dll from a DLL website
Downloading a file with the right name is not a repair strategy. An archive copy can contain malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or an incomplete set of dependent files. It can also leave the damaged HP driver, startup entry, or printer queue untouched.
Do not paste the file into System32, SysWOW64, or the spool-driver directory unless an official installer places it there. The safe sources are:
- The printer’s official HP Support page
- Windows’ built-in printer driver
- A complete driver package supplied by your organization or printer vendor
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for installing or repairing every DLL.
Do not start with:
regsvr32 hpoui05.dll
There is no reliable evidence that this legacy HP file is a self-registering COM component. If you try to register it, an entry-point error does not mean you need another download. It usually means the command does not apply. Repair the HP package instead.

If the printer is too old for Windows 10 or Windows 11
HP’s available downloads depend on the selected printer model and operating system. If no compatible package exists:
- Remove the failed HP software.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Add the printer using Windows’ built-in driver if one is offered.
- Print a test page.
- If necessary, use a supported generic driver from the printer-add wizard.
A very old printer may retain basic printing but lose HP-only features such as the status monitor, toolbox, custom ink alerts, or advanced color controls.
FAQ
Is hpoui05.dll a Windows system file?
No. Available evidence associates it with the old HP Printing System for Windows and HP DeskJet software. It should not be treated like a standard Windows component.
Does the file belong in System32 or SysWOW64?
Not universally. Its reported 32-bit architecture and old printer-driver deployment patterns do not prove one correct path for every installation.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The named DLL may depend on another missing file, or the installed HP package may be incompatible or damaged. Reinstall the complete package rather than replacing only the visible DLL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will SFC restore hpoui05.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while this file appears to belong to HP software.
Should I reinstall a Visual C++ runtime?
Not as the first step. hpoui05.dll is associated with legacy HP printer software, not identified as a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET component.
What if the printer still works?
The missing component may only be an HP toolbox or status monitor. If you do not need those features, uninstalling the obsolete utility and disabling its leftover startup entry may solve the error without affecting basic printing.
When is System Restore appropriate?
Use it only when the failure began immediately after a known software change and no current HP package is available. It is not the first-line repair for an isolated HP DLL error.
