“ The application failed to start because hpv600al.dll was not found.” The hpv600al.dll error usually means an HP DeskJet printer-driver component is missing, damaged, quarantined, or referenced by an incomplete installation.
Do not download hpv600al.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into System32. The file is identified as a Windows Unidrv Plugin belonging to Hewlett-Packard Company DeskJet software. The reliable fix is to repair or reinstall the exact printer driver, not to replace one DLL in isolation.

Which fix applies to you
Choose the situation that best matches what you see:
- The error appeared while installing or using an HP printer: remove the printer and reinstall the correct HP package or Windows in-box driver.
- The error started after antivirus detection: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- The message says “The specified module could not be found”:
hpv600al.dllmay exist, but another dependency may be missing. - The problem began after Windows Update, driver installation, or cleanup: use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- Several Windows components are failing: install pending updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- The printer was removed but the error continues: remove leftover HP startup entries, scheduled tasks, or obsolete printer-driver packages.
- The error names a different DLL: troubleshoot that file separately. Repairing an HP DeskJet driver may not address it.
What hpv600al.dll is
hpv600al.dll is associated with Hewlett-Packard Company DeskJet software and has the description Windows Unidrv Plugin. It is an old printer-driver component, not a general-purpose Windows runtime.

Unidrv is part of the Windows printer-driver architecture. A printer manufacturer can supply a model-specific plug-in DLL that works with Microsoft’s generic Unidrv system. The plug-in adds printer-specific behavior, settings, or resources to the basic driver.
That explains why the file may appear in a Windows driver repository after installing an HP printer. Windows can store third-party driver files alongside other driver packages, but that does not make hpv600al.dll a file supplied with every Windows installation.
The filename alone does not identify the exact printer. Several DeskJet models and historical driver packages may use related components. You need the model printed on the printer, its original packaging, or its existing Windows printer entry before selecting a replacement driver.

Public metadata associates the file with older HP DeskJet software, but universal version, size, hash, language, and architecture details should not be assumed. Different packages may contain different builds.
Common error messages
You may see wording such as:
- “The application failed to start because hpv600al.dll was not found.”
- “The file hpv600al.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading hpv600al.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load hpv600al.dll.”
- “Cannot find …HPV600AL.DLL.”
- “The file hpv600al.dll could not be loaded.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
If Windows explicitly says the file was not found, the driver package may be incomplete or the file may have been removed. If it says the specified module could not be found, the named DLL might be present while a dependency it needs is absent. If Windows says the file is not designed to run on Windows, treat the file as incompatible, corrupted, or suspicious rather than downloading a replacement.
Possible triggers include:
- Removing or reinstalling an HP printer
- A failed printer installation
- A Windows or printer-driver update
- Antivirus quarantine
- Disk cleanup or manual deletion
- Storage corruption
- Malware
- An obsolete HP startup entry that still points to a removed driver
Fix 1: Identify the HP DeskJet and reinstall its driver
This is the most likely solution.
Find the exact printer model
Check the label on the front or top of the printer. If Windows still lists it:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11, or Devices in Windows 10.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer and note its full model name.
You can also check Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Devices and Printers.
Do not choose a driver merely because it says “DeskJet 600 series.” Confirm the exact model where possible. The filename does not tell you which DeskJet is installed.
Remove the broken printer
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10, use Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners, select the printer, and choose Remove device.
If removal fails:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Try removing the printer again.
Do not delete random files from the Windows driver repository. Windows may need those files for other printers.
Remove an obsolete driver package if necessary
After removing the printer:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Highlight the old HP driver package.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that choice.
- Restart the computer.
Only remove a package you can identify as belonging to the affected HP printer. Other printers may depend on related HP components.

Install the correct driver
Use HP’s official Software and Drivers area, search for the exact printer model, and select the package for your version of Windows. Use the complete installer when one is available.
Before installing:
- Confirm the model number.
- Confirm Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Use the correct processor architecture offered for that package.
- Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable only when the installer requests it.
- For a network printer, connect the computer to the same network as the printer.
Run the installer normally. If it fails to write the driver:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Temporarily close other printer installers or management utilities.
- Run the installation again.
Add the printer only after the installer finishes, unless its instructions say otherwise.
How to tell whether it worked
Print a test page:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Choose Printer properties.
- Select Print Test Page.
On Windows 10, open Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners, select the printer, choose Manage, then Print a test page.

If HP does not offer a compatible package, use Windows’ in-box driver instead.
Fix 2: Install the Windows in-box printer driver
Many older DeskJet models can work with a driver already included in Windows. HP’s compatibility information identifies numerous older DeskJet 600-series models as using a Windows in-OS driver on Windows 10. Availability depends on the exact printer and Windows version.
- Remove the old printer from Printers & scanners.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to search.
- Select the printer if it appears.
- Follow the prompts.
For a USB printer that does not appear:
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait briefly, then choose Add manually.
- Select the option for a local printer or network printer with manual settings.
- Choose the correct port.
- Select the closest exact HP model from the driver list.
- If the model is not listed, use Windows Update in the driver-selection window.
- Finish the wizard and print a test page.
The in-box driver may provide basic printing without the older HP utility software. That is often preferable to forcing an incompatible Vista- or XP-era package onto a newer Windows installation.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old printer component. It can also correctly detect a modified or malicious file, so do not restore it automatically.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any item that mentions the HP printer package or
hpv600al.dll. - Check the file path, detection name, and source.
- Restore it only when the file came from a confirmed, complete HP driver package and the detection is clearly a false positive.
If the file came from an unofficial download, leave it quarantined and remove it. Reinstall the complete driver from HP instead.
Run a full scan if the file exists in an unexpected folder, has an unknown publisher, or reappears after removal:

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not reliably restore a third-party HP DLL when the HP driver package itself is absent. Use them when other Windows features or drivers are also failing.
Install pending updates
Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check again until Windows reports that no further updates are ready.
Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the updates and restart.
After restarting, test the printer. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for the operation to reach 100 percent. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Wait for SFC to reach 100 percent before closing the window. Restart Windows and test the printer again.
Recommended Free Tools
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test printing. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, that does not prove the HP driver is complete. The DLL may simply not be a protected Windows component.
If DISM or SFC reports an error, copy the exact result and search Microsoft Support for that message rather than repeatedly running the same command.
When manually checking Windows components and repeating repair commands becomes difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problems it detects and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair features require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the exact HP driver remains the definitive fix for a missing HP-specific component.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall related drivers
A printer can fail because of an outdated USB, chipset, network, or print-spooler dependency even when the HP package is present.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
For a printer device, choose Update driver, then Search automatically for drivers. If that does not help, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and reinstall the official printer package.
Do not uninstall random USB controllers or system devices. If the printer connects over Wi-Fi, also check Network adapters for warnings.
When identifying outdated drivers across several categories would mean hunting through many versions manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers it detects as outdated; its free scan identifies candidates, while driver installation features require the full version. It is not required, and the exact HP model package should remain the source for the printer driver.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help if the error began immediately after a driver update, failed installation, disk-cleanup operation, or other system change.

If the printer has been removed but Windows still displays the error, an old HP utility or startup entry may be trying to load the missing file.
Check the application named in the error dialog. If it identifies an HP utility, uninstall that utility:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps in Windows 11.
- In Windows 10, open Settings → Apps → Apps & features.
- Search for HP printer software.
- Select the old utility.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Also inspect startup applications:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Open Startup apps.
- Disable an old HP entry only if you recognize it and no longer use the associated printer software.
For scheduled tasks:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for clearly identified HP tasks.
- Disable an obsolete task rather than deleting it immediately.
- Restart and check whether the message returns.
If the error appears only during printing, create a fresh Windows printer entry and, if possible, test from a new Windows user profile. This helps separate a damaged user profile from a damaged printer installation.
Fix 8: Consider storage corruption or malware
A missing driver file can be a symptom of broader disk or security problems.
Run a full Windows Security scan. If applications are also reporting corrupted files, Windows freezes, or files disappear unexpectedly, back up important personal data and investigate the storage device.
Do not restore a suspicious hpv600al.dll simply because its filename looks correct. Check its location, publisher, and origin. A file in an HP driver package is more credible than an identically named file downloaded separately.
Recommended Free Tools
If corruption continues after replacing the printer driver, use the drive manufacturer’s supported diagnostic tools or have the storage device checked by a qualified technician.
Why common DLL fixes do not apply
Visual C++ Redistributables
Visual C++ packages repair Microsoft runtime libraries used by compiled applications. They do not normally supply an HP DeskJet Unidrv plug-in. Installing them is unlikely to restore hpv600al.dll.
DirectX
DirectX supports graphics, audio, and game-related functions. It is unrelated to this printer-driver component.

.NET
.NET supports managed applications and services. It is not the normal installation mechanism for a Unidrv printer plug-in.
regsvr32
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 hpv600al.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Unidrv plug-ins are installed and referenced through printer-driver INF packages. There is no verified reason to manually register this file, and the command may produce an error without repairing the driver.
Copying the file to System32
Copying a DLL into System32 can install the wrong architecture, version, or publisher. It may also leave Windows with a file that is not registered in the printer-driver package. Even if the error changes, printing can remain broken.
Prevention
- Keep the exact printer model recorded before removing its driver.
- Use HP’s official driver source or Windows’ in-box driver.
- Remove old printer packages through Windows instead of deleting DLLs manually.
- Review Windows Security Protection history before restoring quarantined files.
- Avoid mixing drivers made for different DeskJet models or older Windows releases.
- Do not use DLL download websites as a substitute for a complete driver installer.
- Create a restore point before major driver changes.
- Keep Windows updated, especially when multiple printer or device components begin failing.
FAQ
Is hpv600al.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Hewlett-Packard Company DeskJet software. Windows may store it in its driver repository after an HP installation, but it is not a universal file included with every Windows installation.
Which HP printer uses hpv600al.dll?
The filename alone does not identify one exact model. It is associated with HP DeskJet driver software, so identify the printer’s full model name before downloading or installing a replacement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan I download hpv600al.dll separately?
You should not. A standalone download can contain the wrong version, architecture, or malicious code and will not repair the missing printer INF registration or related dependencies.
Will SFC restore the file?
Not necessarily. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while hpv600al.dll is an HP printer-driver component. Reinstalling the complete HP or Windows in-box printer driver is the appropriate first repair.
Can 32-bit printer components work on 64-bit Windows?
Yes, Windows can use 32-bit printer components on a 64-bit installation when the driver package supports that configuration. Choose the exact package for the printer and Windows version instead of matching the DLL to the Windows label alone.
What if the error remains after reinstalling the printer?
Check Protection history, remove obsolete HP driver packages, test the Windows in-box driver, and review Event Viewer or the application named in the error. If the printer has already been removed, inspect leftover HP startup entries and scheduled tasks.
