hpzjlog.dll Won’t Load: Reconnect the Correct HP Software

By VGSources Team 12 min read

hpzjlog.dll is an old Hewlett-Packard application DLL, not a normal Windows component. When Windows reports that hpzjlog.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest repair is usually to identify and repair the HP printer software that installed it.

The file is associated with the SDILog program and has appeared in historical HP Digital Imaging and printer packages, including software for older LaserJet and DeskJet models. It may be found inside an HP installation path similar to:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

C:Program FilesHPDigital Imaging{GUID}hpzjlog.dll

The exact folder depends on the printer package. Do not assume that every copy with this filename belongs to the same HP product.

What the error messages mean

The wording varies by Windows version and by the HP program that loads the DLL.

“The program can’t start because hpzjlog.dll is missing from your computer”

The application found a reference to the file but could not find a usable copy in its expected installation directory or search path. This commonly follows an incomplete HP installation, cleanup operation, antivirus quarantine, or partial removal.

“hpzjlog.dll was not found”

The calling HP utility or printer component tried to load the DLL and failed. The message does not identify the exact printer package, so check which application was opening when the error appeared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The code execution cannot proceed because hpzjlog.dll was not found”

This is the same basic problem in newer Windows wording. The program cannot continue because one of its required HP components is absent.

“hpzjlog.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”

Windows found a file with the expected name but rejected it. Possible causes include a damaged file, an incompatible old package, a mismatched 32-bit or 64-bit installation, or a file that did not come from the original HP installer.

A missing DLL does not by itself prove malware or hardware failure.

First, identify the HP program that is failing

Before changing Windows files, find the application that requests hpzjlog.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check these locations:

  1. Note the exact moment the error appears.
  2. During printer setup, the installer is the likely caller.
  3. At sign-in, an old HP startup entry or scheduled helper may remain.
  4. When opening a scan or printer utility, that HP application is the likely source.
  5. Open Settings with Windows key + I.
  6. Select Apps and then Installed apps.
  7. Search for entries containing:
  8. HP
  9. Hewlett-Packard
  10. Digital Imaging
  11. Printer Assistant
  12. Scan
  13. DeskJet
  14. LaserJet
  15. Record the printer model shown in the HP entry.
  16. If the error appears during startup, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  17. Select Startup apps and look for an HP item.
  18. Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location if that option is available.
  19. If the message appears only when a printer is connected, disconnect the printer and restart Windows. If the message stops, the printer package is the primary suspect.

You can also search for the file without downloading anything:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. Search for hpzjlog.dll.
  4. Right-click any result and choose Open file location.
  5. Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect General, Details, and Digital Signatures.

A copy inside an HP program directory is more plausible than one in a temporary download folder. A copy in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 should not be assumed to be legitimate because hpzjlog.dll is not a standard Windows DLL.

Fix 1: Repair the HP printer installation

This is the most likely solution when the error appears while setting up, opening, or using an HP printer utility.

If you still use the printer

  1. Disconnect the printer from the computer. For a network printer, remove it temporarily from the network or turn it off.
  2. Open Settings with Windows key + I.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  5. Find the HP printer software, HP Digital Imaging entry, or printer-specific utility.
  6. Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the entry on Windows 10.
  7. Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Open Control Panel.
  10. Select Devices and Printers. If the category view is displayed, select View devices and printers.
  11. Right-click the old HP printer and choose Remove device.
  12. Open the HP Support site in your browser.
  13. Search for the exact printer model, not just “HP printer.”
  14. Select the driver or software package for your Windows version.
  15. Download the complete official package rather than a standalone DLL.
  16. Run the installer as an administrator. Right-click the downloaded installer, select Properties, choose Compatibility if the installer is very old, and use the compatibility options only if the HP instructions require them.
  17. Reconnect or turn on the printer when the installer requests it.
  18. Restart Windows after installation.
  19. Open the HP printer utility or print a test page.

The repair worked if the HP application opens without the DLL message and the printer appears under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11 or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If HP does not provide a package for your version of Windows, do not copy an old DLL into a Windows folder. Use the built-in Windows printer support if it recognizes the device, or consider replacing the unsupported printer.

If you no longer use the printer

Do not restore hpzjlog.dll merely to silence a leftover startup entry.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Remove the old HP printer software and related Digital Imaging utilities.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Open Task Manager > Startup apps.
  5. Disable a clearly identified HP startup entry that remains.
  6. Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and remove the unused printer.
  7. Restart once more.

If the error returns, the reference may be in a scheduled task or another HP utility. Open Task Scheduler, select Task Scheduler Library, and inspect tasks whose publisher or action clearly identifies the old HP software. Do not delete a task merely because its name contains a generic word such as “helper.”

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

If the error began immediately after a security scan, Windows Security may have quarantined the file.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections from the time the HP file disappeared.
  5. Expand a detection and inspect its path.
  6. If the path points to the original HP installation directory, note the detection name and file location.
  7. Do not restore the file automatically.
  8. Reinstall the HP package from the official HP product support page instead.

Microsoft explains Protection history and restoration behavior in its Windows Security Protection History guidance.

Restore a quarantined file only when you can verify that it came from the original HP installer, the file is digitally signed as expected, and the security detection is understood. Microsoft warns that Defender may detect the file again after restoration. If the file is detected as malware, leave it quarantined, remove the HP package, run a full scan, and reinstall only from HP.

Fix 3: Check the file’s location and signature

If hpzjlog.dll still exists, verify it before attempting repairs.

  1. Right-click the file in File Explorer.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab.
  4. Look for Hewlett-Packard or HP-related publisher information.
  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
  6. Select the signature and choose Details.
  7. Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature.
  8. Use the General tab to record the complete path.

A valid signature does not prove that the current application is compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11, but an unsigned copy in a temporary or unrelated folder deserves caution. Do not replace a suspicious file with one obtained from a DLL download site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Update or reinstall the printer driver

A broken driver installation can leave an old HP helper looking for hpzjlog.dll.

Remove the old printer in Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
  3. Select the affected HP printer.
  4. Choose Remove or Remove device.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Return to the same page and choose Add device.
  7. Allow Windows to search for the printer.
  8. If the printer is not found, choose the option to add it manually.
  9. Install the model-specific driver supplied by HP or use the compatible Windows driver offered by the operating system.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Printers, Print queues, and Imaging devices.
  3. Right-click the affected HP device.
  4. Select Uninstall device.
  5. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you intend to remove the old package completely.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Return to Device Manager and select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
  8. Install the correct driver from HP’s product support page.

The result is successful when the printer has no warning icon in Device Manager, the HP utility starts normally, and Windows can print a test page.

Driver hunting is difficult when an old printer has several similarly named packages and Windows may retain stale entries. Outbyte Driver Updater can perform a free scan to show which drivers are stale, while the repair or driver installation is done by the full version; for this HP-specific file, reinstalling the correct printer package remains the definitive fix.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party HP DLL, so use them when several applications are failing, Windows is unstable, or the problem began with broader system corruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Save your work.
  2. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the HP application again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. See the Microsoft System File Checker instructions.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and the HP program again. If it reports no integrity violations but the HP error remains, that is expected: SFC is not an HP package installer. Return to the HP uninstall-and-reinstall procedure.

Repeating DISM and SFC will not fix a missing file from an incomplete printer installation. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan that shows what may be wrong, while the repair is completed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the HP software remains the direct fix for this file.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is relevant when the error began immediately after installing a printer package, driver, cleanup utility, or Windows update.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the HP installation or update.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the programs and drivers that will be removed or restored.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally rolls back system settings, drivers, and installed programs without changing personal files. Microsoft provides additional details in its System Restore guidance.

After the rollback, do not reinstall the same damaged package without checking the printer model and Windows compatibility first.

Why Visual C++ usually does not apply

Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables are used when an application reports files such as:

MSVCP*.dll
VCRUNTIME*.dll
MSVCR*.dll

hpzjlog.dll is identified with Hewlett-Packard software rather than as a Microsoft runtime component. Installing a Visual C++ package may be appropriate for a separate error, but it normally will not restore this HP DLL or repair a damaged printer installation.

Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong command

regsvr32 registers self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.

Do not run this as a routine fix:

regsvr32 hpzjlog.dll

There is no established evidence that hpzjlog.dll is a COM server requiring registration. If the DLL is not self-registering, regsvr32 can produce errors such as an entry-point or registration failure without repairing the HP application. Microsoft documents this limitation in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.

What not to do

Do not download hpzjlog.dll from a random DLL site

A standalone download can have the wrong version, wrong architecture, invalid signature, or malware. It may also hide the real problem, such as an incomplete HP installation or a leftover startup entry.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64

The correct location is determined by the HP installer and the calling application. Forcing a 32-bit legacy file into a Windows system directory can create new loading and compatibility problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume 64-bit Windows requires a 64-bit DLL

Many older HP packages were 32-bit, even when installed on a 64-bit version of Windows. The correct choice is the complete package for the printer and operating system, not a DLL whose architecture is guessed from the Windows installation.

Do not install every runtime listed on a repair page

Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET repairs are not interchangeable. Install a runtime only when the error identifies that runtime or the official application documentation requires it.

Do not use Windows Features to add this file

Turning optional Windows features on or off will not normally install an HP printer DLL. Windows Features is relevant to Windows components, not to a missing file from an HP application package.

If HP no longer supports the printer

Some older printers have no current package for Windows 10 or Windows 11. In that case:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Search HP Support for the exact model.
  2. Confirm whether a driver is offered for the installed Windows version.
  3. If no compatible package exists, try Windows’ built-in printer support.
  4. Avoid forcing an old installer to place files in system directories.
  5. Remove obsolete HP utilities if the printer is no longer reliable.
  6. Replace the device if it cannot operate safely with the current system.

HP diagnostic utilities also change over time. If an older HP diagnostic tool is retired, use the current HP app or the support options offered for the specific printer rather than searching for a replacement DLL.

Frequently asked questions

Is hpzjlog.dll a Windows system file?

No evidence supports that. It is associated with Hewlett-Packard software and historical HP printer or Digital Imaging packages.

Which HP printer installed it?

It may occur in more than one package, including older LaserJet and DeskJet software. Check the installed HP entries, the file path, and the printer that triggers the error instead of assigning it to one model automatically.

Is hpzjlog.dll safe?

A copy installed by a correctly identified, digitally signed HP package is more trustworthy. Verify its location and signature. A copy in a temporary download directory, an unrelated application folder, or a Windows system directory requires additional investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reinstall Visual C++?

Usually no. This file is HP-specific rather than a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Reinstall Visual C++ only when the error names a Microsoft runtime file or another application requires it.

Should I run regsvr32?

Usually no. regsvr32 is for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs, and there is no established evidence that this file requires registration.

What if the error appears after removing my HP printer?

An HP startup item, scheduled task, or helper may remain after the main software was removed. Uninstall the remaining HP software, remove the old printer entry, and disable or remove only clearly identified leftover HP components.

What if Windows Security detects the file?

Leave it quarantined until you verify its source. Check Protection history, note the original path, scan the system, and reinstall the complete package from HP rather than restoring an isolated DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I use SFC and DISM?

Use them when several Windows components or applications are failing, or Windows shows broader corruption. They are secondary checks and generally will not recreate a missing third-party HP file.

What details are useful if the problem continues?

Record the full error text, the HP printer model, your Windows version, the complete path of any existing hpzjlog.dll, the digital-signature result, and what changed immediately before the error appeared. Those details distinguish a damaged HP installation from a leftover startup reference, quarantine event, architecture mismatch, or broader Windows problem.
