If Windows says mdt2db.dll is missing, the safest fix is normally to repair or reinstall the older application that needs it, not to copy a DLL into System32.
| Item | What it means |
|---|---|
| File | mdt2db.dll |
| Description | Microsoft Design Tool – Database Designer |
| Component | Microsoft Design Tools, historically associated with Visual Studio 6-era Data Tools |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Windows system file | No. It is not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 component |
| Architecture | Available evidence identifies it as a Win32, 32-bit library |
| Usual repair | Repair or reinstall the parent application from its original licensed installer |
The exact Visual Studio edition or application that installed the file cannot be determined from the filename alone. Historical installation paths included shared Microsoft development-tool directories such as Common FilesMicrosoft SharedMSDesign, but applications and installers could use different locations.

What the mdt2db.dll error means
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because mdt2db.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because mdt2db.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading mdt2db.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “A required component is missing: mdt2db.dll.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- “mdt2db.dll is not designed to run on Windows.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
A missing-file message can mean that the file was deleted, quarantined, or never installed. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that mdt2db.dll exists but one of its own dependent files is missing. An entry-point error usually indicates an incompatible version. “Not designed to run on Windows” commonly points to a damaged or wrong-architecture binary.

A modern computer can request a 1990s-era DLL because an older business program, database tool, installer, or development project is still installed. Windows loads libraries required by the application that starts; it does not replace an application’s private dependencies with modern equivalents.

Fix 1: Identify the program that needs mdt2db.dll
Do this before repairing Windows. The program named in the error is usually the correct starting point.
Check the error window
Write down the executable or program name shown in the message. It may identify an old database utility, developer tool, installer, or business application.
If the message appears immediately after signing in, the program may be launched by a startup shortcut, scheduled task, or service rather than from the Start menu.
Inspect the shortcut target
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and its folder.
- Open File Explorer and inspect that folder for the program’s installer, documentation, or other Microsoft Design Tools files.
Do not replace a working DLL in that folder yet. First establish which product owns the installation.
Check installed programs
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the application named in the error.
- Also look for older Microsoft development tools, database tools, or a product installed around the same time.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Search for the affected program.
You can also use the classic list:
- Press
Windowskey, type Control Panel, and open it. - Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Locate the likely parent application.
- Check whether Repair, Change, or Uninstall is available.
If only one old program reports the error, that program is more likely damaged than Windows itself.
Use Event Viewer only when the program is unclear
- Press
Windowskey and type Event Viewer. - Open Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Select Filter Current Log in the right-hand pane.
- Filter for recent Error events.
- Look for the application name and the failing module.
Event Viewer may identify the executable, but it may not reveal every missing dependency. Use it to locate the parent program, not as proof that mdt2db.dll itself belongs in a Windows system folder.
Use Process Monitor for a difficult case
Microsoft Sysinternals Process Monitor can show which process searches for a missing library. Use it only if the requesting program cannot be identified through the error, shortcut, or Event Viewer.
Filter events by:
- Process Name
- Operation:
CreateFile - Path ending in
mdt2db.dll - Result:
NAME NOT FOUND
A search failure tells you where the program looked. It does not make that location an appropriate destination for a manually downloaded DLL.
Fix 2: Repair the parent application
This is the highest-probability fix.
Try Windows’ built-in repair option
For a newer desktop application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu or open its advanced options.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If there is no Repair button:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
Old desktop programs often do not support the modern Settings repair interface. If the option is absent, use the original installer or installation media.
Reinstall from the original source
- Find the application’s original licensed installer, installation disc, or vendor-provided setup package.
- Back up the application’s data and configuration first.
- Uninstall only the damaged parent application if the installer requires it.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Run the original setup program as an administrator.
- Install the complete feature set that includes the application’s database or design tools.
- Restart the affected program.
Do not install only a file named mdt2db.dll. The installer must place the matching library, supporting files, registry information, and dependent components together.
If the error began after uninstalling Visual Studio or another old development product, the uninstall may have removed shared Design Tools files. Reinstall the application that still needs them rather than reinstalling an unrelated current runtime.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 3: Understand the Visual Studio 6 and SP6 connection
mdt2db.dll is associated with Microsoft Design Tools and historical Visual Studio 6-era Data Tools. That explains why an old application may request it, but it does not identify the exact product edition.
Microsoft’s Visual Studio 6 SP6 material covers Visual Basic 6.0, Visual C++ 6.0, and Visual SourceSafe 6.0. It is an update for those products, not a general-purpose mdt2db.dll installer. If you do not already own and have the underlying product, installing SP6 alone is unlikely to reconstruct the application that needs this file.
If you have a legitimate Visual Studio 6 installation:
- Confirm which Visual Studio 6 product is installed.
- Back up projects and configuration files.
- Apply the appropriate Microsoft service-pack material according to its documentation.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application.
- If the error remains, use the original product installer to repair the Data Tools or Design Tools feature.
Do not assume that installing modern Visual Studio, Visual C++ Redistributables, .NET, DirectX, or Windows Update will install this historical component. Those packages address different files and are not proven direct fixes for mdt2db.dll.

The parent product must still be present and correctly installed.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine an old DLL, especially when it belongs to an obsolete ActiveX or COM-related application.
In Windows Security:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries.
- Look for an event involving
mdt2db.dllor the application that uses it. - Check the original path, detection details, and source.
- Do not restore the file unless you have verified that the application and installer are legitimate.
If the file was quarantined from a trusted, licensed application:
- Update Windows Security definitions.
- Scan the installer and the application directory.
- Verify the original installation source and digital signature where available.
- Restore the item only if you are confident it is genuine.
- Repair or reinstall the parent application afterward.
If the file came from an unknown archive or was placed in an unexpected directory, leave it quarantined. Run a full scan and remove untrusted copies. Do not disable antivirus to force a downloaded DLL to load.
Fix 5: Check architecture and dependency errors
Evidence identifies mdt2db.dll as a 32-bit Win32 library. A 32-bit application normally needs the 32-bit version of its dependency, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
This creates several common failure modes:
- A 64-bit copy is supplied to a 32-bit application.
- A different build has the same filename but incompatible exports.
- The file is present but another dependency is absent.
- The application searches its own directory or a historical shared directory, not
System32. - A copied file has been blocked, damaged, or replaced by security software.
On 64-bit Windows, do not decide between System32 and SysWOW64 by filename alone. Those directories serve different Windows compatibility roles, and manually placing an application DLL in either one can make troubleshooting harder. Reinstall the matching 32-bit parent application and let its installer choose the correct location.
If the message says “entry point could not be located,” stop copying files. That wording strongly suggests that the program found a DLL but received a build with the wrong exported functions. Restore the original application installation instead.
Fix 6: Repair Windows only when Windows itself is damaged
mdt2db.dll is normally an application-owned library. DISM and System File Checker will not usually recreate it. Use them when Windows has broader symptoms, such as several unrelated system errors, damaged protected files, failed servicing operations, or widespread application failures.

Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, review the result and return to repairing the parent application. Do not interpret an SFC result as confirmation that mdt2db.dll belongs to Windows.
Running repeated repair commands without knowing what changed can make diagnosis unnecessarily difficult. If you want a guided scan while investigating broader Windows corruption, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it identifies; its free scan shows the findings, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the application that owns mdt2db.dll remains the definitive fix for an application-specific failure.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when evidence points to a driver
A graphics, storage, or chipset driver is not the normal cause of a missing Microsoft Design Tools DLL. Do not update drivers as a substitute for reinstalling the parent application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Driver troubleshooting is relevant when the same failure is accompanied by device errors, crashes, display problems, or entries in Device Manager.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and check the device status.
- Open the Driver tab to view the provider and version.
- Use Update Driver only when a compatible driver is available from the device or computer manufacturer.
If a recent driver caused the broader problem:
- Open the device’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If driver maintenance is genuinely part of a wider repair, Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through hardware pages and guessing which drivers are stale; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not a replacement for reinstalling the legacy application that requires mdt2db.dll.
Fix 8: Check Windows Features only for a known application requirement
Windows Features does not normally provide mdt2db.dll, so enabling random legacy options is unlikely to help.
If the application’s documentation specifically requires an optional Windows component:
- Press
Windowskey. - Type Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open it.
- Select only the feature named by the application’s documentation.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the application.
Do not enable old components simply because the program is old. A feature setting cannot replace the application’s own Design Tools files.
What not to do
Do not download mdt2db.dll from a random DLL website
An archive may contain:
- Malware or a tampered file
- The wrong version
- A 64-bit file for a 32-bit program
- A file from a different Microsoft Design Tools build
- A library with missing dependencies
- A file that does not match the application’s expected exports
No current official Microsoft page identified here offers mdt2db.dll as a standalone download. Use the original licensed application installer, Microsoft installation media, or the vendor’s legitimate recovery package instead.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
This can hide the real owner of the file, create a version conflict, and expose unrelated programs to an incompatible library. Application DLLs are usually loaded from the application directory or an installer-managed shared location.
Do not start with regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a generic command for installing or repairing a missing dependency.

regsvr32 mdt2db.dll
will not normally restore a missing file, repair its dependent libraries, or make an incompatible build work. It may fail with an entry-point error, or it may register a component that was never meant to be registered manually. Use it only when the application’s official documentation specifically requires registration and identifies the correct file and architecture.
Do not install unrelated runtimes as a guess
Modern Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, .NET, Windows Update, and Windows Features may be useful for other failures, but none is established as the direct fix for this particular legacy DLL. Install them only when dependency analysis or the application’s documentation identifies a genuine requirement.
Do not restore an unverified quarantined copy
A missing file can be safer than an untrusted replacement. Verify the source, original path, application, and security status before restoring anything.
If the application is obsolete
Some Visual Studio 6-era applications cannot run reliably on current Windows releases, even after their files are restored. If the original installer no longer works:
Recommended Free Tools
- Preserve the application’s data and license information.
- Check whether the vendor provides a supported replacement.
- Test the program in an isolated, properly maintained legacy environment if your organization has a legitimate need.
- Restrict network access for obsolete software where practical.
- Replace the application when an actively maintained alternative is available.
Older Microsoft development components also have documented security history, so restoring them should not be treated as a reason to expose an unsupported system directly to the internet.
Verification checklist
The repair is on the right track when:
- The error identifies the same parent application you repaired.
- The application starts without requesting another missing file.
- The repaired program loads its projects or data normally.
- The file is located in the application’s expected installation path.
- Windows Security shows no unresolved detection.
- You did not need to copy a DLL into a Windows system directory.
If a new dependency error appears, record its exact filename and return to the parent application’s installer. A chain of missing-library messages usually means the installation is incomplete, not that every named DLL should be downloaded separately.
FAQ
Is mdt2db.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file?
No. It is a historical Microsoft Design Tools library and should not normally be present as a standard Windows component in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is mdt2db.dll part of Visual Basic 6?
It is associated with the Visual Studio 6-era Microsoft Design Tools and Data Tools family, but the filename alone cannot establish the exact product edition that installed it. Visual Basic 6 SP6 updates an existing product; it is not a standalone DLL installer.
Can Visual C++ Redistributable fix this error?
Not normally. Install a Visual C++ package only if dependency analysis identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime. It is not a proven direct repair for mdt2db.dll.
Why does the message say the module is missing when the file is visible?
Windows may be reporting a missing dependency of mdt2db.dll, or the visible file may be the wrong architecture or build. Reinstall the matching parent application rather than replacing the visible file.
Should I register mdt2db.dll with regsvr32?
Usually no. Registration is not a generic repair step and may produce an entry-point error. Use it only when the original application documentation explicitly requires it.
What if the error began after uninstalling Visual Studio?
The uninstall may have removed a shared Design Tools component still needed by another program. Repair or reinstall the program that now fails, using its original installer.
What if the program is no longer supported?
Recover its data, look for a maintained replacement, or run it only in an appropriately isolated legacy environment. Do not compensate for unsupported software by downloading unverified DLLs.
