hpzjut01.dll Missing: Trace the Legacy HP Printer Repair

By VGSources Team 12 min read

“The program can’t start because hpzjut01.dll is missing”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

hpzjut01.dll is a legacy Hewlett-Packard printer-software file, not a normal Windows component. It is associated with SDIUtilities, has the reported description “SDIUtilities DLL,” and was included in older HP Deskjet driver and preload packages.

The safest fix is to identify the HP printer package that is trying to load it, remove that damaged or obsolete package, and reinstall the correct software for the printer and Windows version. Do not download a replacement copy into System32.

Which fix applies to you

Use the symptom that best matches your situation:

  • The error names an HP printer program or appears when printing: repair or reinstall the HP printer software.
  • The printer was removed, but the error appears at Windows startup: remove the leftover HP software or startup entry.
  • Your antivirus recently quarantined the file: review quarantine, then reinstall the HP package from HP rather than restoring an isolated DLL.
  • The error began after a Windows update or driver change: check the HP package and consider System Restore if the timing is clear.
  • The file exists, but Windows says “the specified module could not be found”: a dependency may be missing. Reinstall the complete HP package instead of copying the named DLL.
  • The file is in an unusual folder and no HP software is installed: scan it and do not assume it is legitimate.
  • Other Windows files also fail: run DISM and SFC. These repair Windows components, not normally private HP printer files.
  • You no longer use the printer: uninstall the old HP software and remove its startup reference instead of rebuilding it.

What hpzjut01.dll belongs to

Historical HP printer packages used hpzjut01.dll as a private helper library. Public driver inventories associate it with older Deskjet packages, including Deskjet 6122, 6127, and 995c software. It commonly appears with related HP files in an HP program directory, such as a path under:

The exact directory can differ between packages and Windows installations. The important point is that this is an HP application or driver file, not a file Windows normally supplies from:

Older package records also show different file sizes and builds. Do not treat a version or size found in an old catalogue as a universal specification for every HP installation.

A copy in an HP printer-software folder with consistent publisher information is more plausible than a copy placed in a system directory by hand. Location alone is not proof, so check the file properties and the program that loads it.

Fix 1: Reinstall the complete HP printer package

This is the primary repair for a missing, damaged, or incomplete hpzjut01.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Identify the affected HP software

If the error dialog names an executable, write it down. It may identify the HP utility, printer monitor, or setup component that is requesting the DLL.

Then check installed applications:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for HP, Hewlett-Packard, Deskjet, or the printer model.
  5. Open the entry’s menu and select Uninstall when available.

On older Windows interfaces:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for the HP printer software in Programs and Features.
  5. Select it and choose Uninstall.

Do not remove unrelated HP software solely because its name begins with HP. Confirm that it belongs to the affected printer.

2. Remove the printer

After uninstalling the software:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select View devices and printers.
  3. Right-click the old HP printer.
  4. Select Remove device.
  5. Confirm the removal.

If the printer is not listed there:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type control printers.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Remove any matching old printer entry.

Disconnect the USB cable during cleanup if the printer is connected. This prevents Windows from immediately detecting the device and reinstalling part of the old package.

3. Restart Windows

Restart before installing the replacement package. This clears printer-monitor processes and allows Windows to release files that may still be in use.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Download the correct HP software

Use HP’s official support site and search for the exact printer model. Select the driver or software package for the Windows version shown under:

  1. Settings
  2. System
  3. About
  4. Windows specifications

Also check System type to see whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.

Install the package intended for that exact model and operating system. Do not substitute a package for a similar Deskjet model. If HP does not list a compatible package, the old software may not support the current version of Windows.

5. Install and test

Run the HP installer normally. If it requests administrator approval, allow it only when the installer came from HP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After installation:

  1. Reconnect the printer.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  3. Confirm that the printer appears.
  4. Open its properties or management page.
  5. Print a test page.

A successful repair means the HP utility or printer operation starts without the hpzjut01.dll message. The file should be installed alongside the HP package rather than copied manually into a Windows directory.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through old hardware packages and checking which drivers are stale; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix when this specific DLL is missing.

Fix 2: Remove a leftover startup reference

An old HP printer can be gone while its startup command remains. Windows then tries to launch an HP helper at sign-in and displays the missing-DLL error.

Check Startup apps

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an HP or Hewlett-Packard entry.
  4. Right-click it and select Open file location, if available.
  5. Check whether the path belongs to the old printer installation.
  6. If the printer is no longer used, return to Task Manager.
  7. Right-click the confirmed entry and select Disable.

Disabling the entry prevents it from launching but does not remove the software. Uninstall the associated HP package through Installed apps or Programs and Features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the startup folder

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type shell:startup.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for a shortcut clearly belonging to the old HP printer.
  5. Move that shortcut to the Desktop temporarily.
  6. Restart Windows.

If the error disappears, the shortcut was the trigger. Delete it only after confirming that the printer software is no longer required.

You can also check the common startup folder with:

shell:common startup

Do not delete arbitrary registry values or files merely because their names begin with hpz. Confirm the full path, publisher, and printer association first.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may quarantine a damaged, altered, or incorrectly detected HP file. It may also remove a file after the rest of the old package has already been deleted.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving hpzjut01.dll.
  5. Expand the event and record the original path and detection reason.

Restore the file only if all of these are true:

  • The original path was inside the expected HP printer-software directory.
  • The HP printer package is installed and still needed.
  • The file properties identify Hewlett-Packard or a consistent HP package.
  • A current security scan does not continue to flag the installation.

When those details do not line up, leave the file quarantined. Update security definitions and reinstall the complete printer package from HP. Do not disable antivirus protection just to obtain a DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the same file is detected again immediately after reinstalling, run a full scan and treat the installation as untrusted until the security warning is understood.

Fix 4: Check whether a dependency is actually missing

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that hpzjut01.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load one of its dependent libraries.

To distinguish the cases:

  1. Read the entire error dialog.
  2. Record the executable named in the message.
  3. Search File Explorer for hpzjut01.dll.
  4. Right-click a matching file and select Properties.
  5. Check Details for the description and publisher.
  6. Check General for the complete location.
  7. Compare that location with the HP printer installation.

If the file exists in the expected HP folder, reinstalling the complete HP package is still the safest dependency repair. A manually copied DLL does not restore the other files, registry configuration, printer monitor, or correct architecture.

If the message identifies another DLL, repair the component that owns that other file. Do not assume that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is involved merely because a DLL is missing. There is no reliable evidence that hpzjut01.dll is a Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Match the package architecture

Historical HP packages containing this file are associated with older 32-bit printer software. That does not mean a 32-bit file should be copied into either Windows system directory.

On 64-bit Windows:

  • System32 is primarily used for 64-bit system components.
  • SysWOW64 contains Windows-on-Windows support for 32-bit applications.
  • Neither folder is the correct default home for a private HP printer DLL.

Installing a 32-bit DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 does not convert it into a compatible system component. It can also cause version conflicts with another program.

Instead:

  1. Check Settings > System > About > System type.
  2. Visit HP’s support page for the exact printer.
  3. Select the package explicitly listed for your Windows version.
  4. If no supported package is listed, use Windows’ built-in printer support where available or replace the unsupported printer.

Do not force an XP-era or otherwise unsupported driver onto a current 64-bit Windows installation.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair

regsvr32 registers certain self-registering COM or ActiveX libraries. It is not a general-purpose command for repairing every missing DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no reliable evidence that hpzjut01.dll is a self-registering COM server. Running a command such as this is therefore not a first-line fix:

regsvr32 hpzjut01.dll

If you run it against a non-registerable library, Windows may report that an entry point is missing or that the module could not be loaded. That does not prove the file is corrupt.

Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation specifically requires registration and identifies the correct file and architecture. For this HP printer helper, reinstall the complete HP package instead.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

hpzjut01.dll is a third-party HP file, so Windows repair commands normally will not recreate it. Use these commands when other Windows components are also failing, or when the HP installer itself cannot run because Windows system files appear damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM first

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to complete. Keep the window open if the progress appears to pause.

Run System File Checker

After DISM finishes, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the HP software again.

Possible SFC results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows system files were not the problem.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: review the CBS log or run DISM again after restarting, then repeat SFC.

These commands repair Windows components. They should not be expected to supply a missing HP-private DLL.

If manually checking component health and repeating repair commands is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues and show what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected HP printer software remains the definitive fix for this file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a known change

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver update, Windows change, cleanup operation, or software installation and a restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs.
  5. Review the software and drivers that may be changed.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.

System Restore does not replace a proper HP package permanently. If the rollback removes a recent change but the old printer software remains damaged, uninstall and reinstall the printer package afterward.

Fix 9: Scan an unexpected copy for malware

A legitimate historical copy should normally be connected to an HP printer installation. Be cautious when:

  • The file is in a temporary, download, user-profile, or random application folder.
  • The publisher information is absent or inconsistent.
  • The file appeared after downloading an unofficial installer.
  • Security software reports suspicious behavior.

Run a scan before moving or replacing the file:

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Show more options if necessary.
  3. Select Scan with Microsoft Defender.

You can also open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options and select Full scan. Leave a suspicious copy quarantined while investigating. Do not overwrite it with another download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What not to do

Do not download hpzjut01.dll from a random DLL download site. A matching filename can still have the wrong version, architecture, dependencies, signature, or installation path. It may also introduce malware and leave the damaged HP installation unresolved.

Do not copy the file into:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Do not rename another DLL to hpzjut01.dll. Do not run registry cleaners to remove the message. Do not delete every file or registry entry beginning with hpz without confirming that it belongs to the obsolete printer.

The safe source is the official HP support page for the exact printer model and Windows version. If HP no longer offers a compatible package, use the built-in Windows printer driver where available or move to a supported printer.

Prevention after the repair

Once printing works:

  1. Remove duplicate entries for the old printer under Printers & scanners.
  2. Keep only the HP package required by the printer you still use.
  3. Create a restore point before installing another legacy driver.
  4. Keep Windows Security enabled.
  5. Save the exact printer model and compatible Windows version.
  6. Avoid generic driver packages that do not identify the printer model.
  7. Do not manually replace private DLLs after future cleanups.

FAQ

Is hpzjut01.dll safe?

It is a legitimate legacy HP printer-software DLL when it comes from an expected HP installation and matches the surrounding package. A file with the same name in an unrelated location is not automatically safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is hpzjut01.dll part of Windows?

No reliable evidence shows that Windows itself ships this file as a protected system component. It is associated with HP printer software and should not normally be installed in System32 or SysWOW64.

Which HP printer installed it?

Historical inventories associate it with older Deskjet driver and preload packages, including Deskjet 6122, 6127, and 995c software. The exact package can be identified from the file’s full path, the triggering executable, and the installed printer model.

Why does the error appear after uninstalling a printer?

The main HP software may be removed while a startup shortcut, printer monitor, scheduled action, or partial driver remains. Windows then launches the leftover component and reports that its private DLL is missing.

Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET help?

Not as a first-line repair. hpzjut01.dll is identified with HP’s SDIUtilities software, and no reliable evidence connects it to those Microsoft runtime families. Repair them only when the error separately identifies a runtime component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I register the file with regsvr32?

Usually no. regsvr32 is for self-registering libraries, and there is no reliable evidence that this HP helper requires registration. Reinstall the complete HP package instead.

What if the file is quarantined?

Check its original path and publisher information. Restore it only when the path clearly belongs to the HP printer installation and the security product no longer flags it. Otherwise leave it quarantined and reinstall from HP.

What if HP has no driver for my printer?

Do not force an old driver onto current 64-bit Windows. Try the built-in Windows printer driver if the model supports it. If it does not, a supported replacement printer may be the practical solution.

How do I know whether the file or a dependency is missing?

If hpzjut01.dll exists in the expected HP folder but Windows says “the specified module could not be found,” one of its dependencies may be unavailable. Record the executable, full path, Windows version, printer model, and file properties before troubleshooting further.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I use SFC, DISM, or System Restore?

Use DISM and SFC when other Windows files or installers are failing. Use System Restore when the problem clearly began after a recent update or driver change and an appropriate restore point is available. For an isolated missing HP DLL, repair or reinstall the HP printer package first.
