msasn1.dll Missing: Restore Windows Before Reinstalling Apps

By VGSources Team 14 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

msasn1.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component, so the safest fix is to repair Windows rather than download a replacement DLL. Run DISM and System File Checker first, then repair the affected application if only one program still refuses to start.

What this file actually does

msasn1.dll is named ASN.1 Runtime APIs and is published by Microsoft as part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. Windows software uses it for runtime and security-support work associated with ASN.1 data, including data used in certificates and related security operations. Microsoft identifies Msasn1.dll as a Windows file in its security documentation. Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-007

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

It is not normally a separately installed application library. It does not belong specifically to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, a particular game, or a device driver. An individual application may depend on it, but Windows normally supplies and services the file.

On a typical 64-bit Windows installation:

  • The native 64-bit copy is normally in C:WindowsSystem32.
  • The 32-bit copy used by 32-bit applications is normally in C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Those directory names are confusing: System32 contains native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit system files. Windows filesystem redirection helps 32-bit programs receive the correct architecture. Microsoft file-system redirector documentation

Exact file versions and sizes vary by Windows release, edition, architecture, servicing level, and installed updates. There is no single version or byte size that should be treated as correct for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer.

What the error pattern usually means

Symptom Most likely explanation Best next step
Several Windows programs fail Damaged, deleted, or mismatched Windows component Install updates, then run DISM and SFC
Only one older program or game fails Damaged application files or an application-specific dependency Repair or verify that application
The problem started after an update Incomplete update or component-store damage Finish updates, restart, then use DISM and SFC
Windows Security shows the file in quarantine Antivirus action or possible false detection Validate the path and Microsoft signature before restoring
“Specified module could not be found” appears The named DLL or another dependency may be missing Check the application and its dependent files
A 32-bit program fails on 64-bit Windows Architecture mismatch or damaged redirected copy Repair Windows and reinstall the application
regsvr32 reports no entry point The DLL is not a COM server Stop trying to register it and use Windows repair
SFC reports no violations but the program still fails The application, another dependency, or its configuration is at fault Identify the exact executable and inspect its logs

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

A pending or incomplete update can leave system components in an inconsistent state. Complete this step before deeper repair commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install every available update.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Launch the program again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates.
  6. Restart Windows and test the affected program.

If the error began immediately after an update and remains after restarting, continue with the repair commands below. Do not uninstall a Windows update solely because a program displayed a DLL message unless the timing is clear and other repair steps have failed.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the primary repair for a missing, corrupted, or mismatched msasn1.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component source that System File Checker uses. Microsoft System File Checker guidance

Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.

Run these commands separately:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for DISM to finish. It may appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window while it is working.

Then run:

sfc /scannow

Allow the scan to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows when it finishes and test the program again.

How to read the result

  • “The restore operation completed successfully” means DISM completed its repair operation. Continue with SFC if you have not already done so.
  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC did not find corruption in the protected system files it checked. If the error remains, investigate the application or another dependency.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means Windows repaired protected files. Restart and test again.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means the repair is incomplete. Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still cannot repair the files, move to the escalation steps later in this guide.

If the manual process leaves you repeatedly hunting through repair logs and rerunning DISM and SFC without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for the Microsoft repair path.

Do not use the command prompt to delete msasn1.dll, take ownership of protected Windows folders, or force a replacement from another computer.

Fix 3: Check whether only one application is affected

If Windows starts normally and only one program displays the error, the application may be damaged even though msasn1.dll belongs to Windows. The program could also be loading an incompatible private copy or reporting a missing dependency under a generic DLL message.

First close the program and restart Windows. Then use the repair option appropriate to the application.

Repair a Windows app in Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the application’s three-dot menu.
  6. Select Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

Repair normally preserves the application’s data. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data and settings.

Repair a traditional desktop program

  1. Open Start and search for Control Panel.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
  6. Follow the installer’s instructions.
  7. Restart Windows if requested.

Microsoft documents these application repair paths in its guidance for repairing apps and programs. Repair apps and programs in Windows

For a game, use the launcher’s official Verify, Repair files, or equivalent command before reinstalling the entire game. If the game alone fails and verification reports damaged files, repairing or reinstalling the game remains the definitive fix for that game.

What success looks like

The application should start without the msasn1.dll message. If the same message returns immediately after a clean application reinstall, the problem is more likely in Windows, the application’s architecture, or another dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check the file path, architecture, and signature

Do not treat the existence of a file named msasn1.dll as proof that it is genuine. Location, architecture, and digital signature all matter.

Check the normal locations

In File Explorer, inspect these paths:

C:WindowsSystem32msasn1.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64msasn1.dll

The second path normally applies to 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows. On 32-bit Windows, SysWOW64 is not normally used.

Do not manually copy the file between these folders. If one copy is missing, use Windows servicing and repair tools to restore it.

Check the digital signature

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
  4. Select the Microsoft signature.
  5. Select Details.
  6. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.

A file with the right name in an application folder, temporary folder, download directory, or unrelated third-party location should not automatically be trusted. If the signature is absent, invalid, or the location is suspicious, run a Microsoft Defender scan rather than replacing the file manually.

Consider 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

An older 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64, but it needs the 32-bit system components supplied through the redirected environment. A 64-bit application needs the native 64-bit component.

If the application installer offers separate x86 and x64 builds, install the build that matches the application and your Windows environment. Do not install an arbitrary DLL architecture to make the message disappear.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can quarantine a file after a detection or suspected tampering. The correct response is verification, not blind restoration.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Find the event involving msasn1.dll.
  6. Expand the event and review the detected path and threat name.
  7. Confirm whether the file was in a normal Windows directory.
  8. Validate its Microsoft digital signature if the file is available.
  9. Restore or allow the item only when you have confirmed it is a genuine Microsoft file and the detection is a false positive.

Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the device. Windows Security Protection History guidance

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the file was outside C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64, do not restore it merely because its filename matches. Update Windows Security, run a full scan, and investigate the application that introduced the file.

Fix 6: Repair the current Windows installation

If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, and the problem began after a Windows update or broader system change, use Windows’ repair-reinstall options.

Windows 11 repair reinstall through Windows Update

On supported Windows 11 installations:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
  7. Restart and test the affected program.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability can vary by Windows configuration. Microsoft repair-reinstall guidance

If that option is not available, use Microsoft’s official Windows recovery options and installation media appropriate for the installed version. Back up important files before any major recovery operation. Windows recovery options

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore is useful when the error appeared after software installation, a driver change, an update, cleanup software, or malware removal. It can revert system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files.

Start System Restore

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Next > Finish.
  5. Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.

You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. Microsoft System Restore guidance

System Restore is not a substitute for malware removal or a file backup. If the issue returns, identify the software or update that caused it instead of repeatedly restoring the same point.

Fix 8: Investigate drivers only when the timing points to one

msasn1.dll is not a driver file. Updating a graphics, storage, network, or chipset driver is not a direct repair for this Windows DLL. It becomes relevant when the failure began after a driver installation or when the affected program depends on a device component that was recently changed.

Do not remove a device or install a random driver package just because an application mentions msasn1.dll.

When checking many device models manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues instead of making you guess which of dozens of drivers is stale; the free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is performed by the full version.

If a particular game or application is the only failure, updating drivers is not a replacement for repairing or reinstalling that application.

Why Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET usually are not the answer

Because many programs report generic DLL errors, users often reinstall Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET immediately. Those packages are not the normal source of msasn1.dll; this file is part of Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install or repair one of those runtimes only when the program separately reports a missing component belonging to that runtime, or when the application’s official support instructions specifically require it. Reinstalling them will not restore a damaged Windows copy of msasn1.dll.

Similarly, Windows Features is not a general repair tool for this file. You can use Windows Features when an application specifically requires an optional Windows component:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Turn Windows features on or off.
  3. Open it.
  4. Enable only the feature required by the application.
  5. Select OK.
  6. Restart if Windows requests it.

Do not enable unrelated features to solve a generic msasn1.dll message.

Why regsvr32 does not fix msasn1.dll

regsvr32 is used to register certain COM and ActiveX DLLs. It is not a universal DLL repair command. A runtime DLL that does not expose DllRegisterServer cannot be repaired by registering it, and Microsoft documents that regsvr32 reports an error when that entry point is missing. Microsoft Regsvr32 troubleshooting

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not run commands such as:

regsvr32 msasn1.dll

Registering msasn1.dll is not an appropriate repair method. Use DISM and SFC for the Windows component, or repair the application that is failing.

What each common message means

“The program can’t start because MSASN1.dll is missing from your computer”

Windows could not load the required component when the program started. The file may be damaged, quarantined, missing from the expected system location, or unavailable because another dependency failed first.

Start with updates, DISM, and SFC.

“The code execution cannot proceed because msasn1.dll was not found”

The application requested the DLL and Windows could not find a usable copy. This can indicate a missing system file, a path problem, or an architecture mismatch.

Do not respond by downloading a replacement from a DLL website.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Error loading msasn1.dll. The specified module could not be found”

This wording does not always mean that msasn1.dll itself is absent. A dependency required by the DLL or the application may be missing. If the file exists in the normal Windows directory and has a valid Microsoft signature, repair the application and inspect its logs.

“There was a problem starting msasn1.dll”

This is a generic startup failure. It can occur when the file is corrupt, incompatible, blocked, or being loaded by a program that has another broken dependency.

“msasn1.dll is corrupted”

This points more directly toward Windows component damage, although an antivirus action or disk problem may also be involved. Run DISM followed by SFC, then check disk health and Windows Security if the repair does not hold.

A program-specific message such as VMStillMnt: VM332_STI.EXE

A named executable identifies the program that was trying to load the component, not necessarily the owner of the DLL. A Microsoft Q&A report shows this type of MSASN1.dll is missing message alongside a specific executable. Microsoft Q&A example

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair that application after repairing Windows. Do not assume the executable name proves that msasn1.dll belongs to it.

If the error still remains

Use these questions to narrow the cause:

  1. Do multiple Windows programs fail, or only one application?
  2. Did the problem begin immediately after Windows Update, an uninstall, disk cleanup, malware removal, or antivirus quarantine?
  3. Is the failing program 32-bit while Windows is 64-bit?
  4. Is msasn1.dll present in the expected Windows directory?
  5. Does the file have a valid Microsoft digital signature?
  6. Does the program’s own repair or verification process report damaged files?
  7. Does SFC report that it repaired files, found no violations, or could not repair some files?
  8. Does Event Viewer or the application log name another missing dependency?

If SFC reports no violations but the application still fails, identify the exact failing executable and inspect Event Viewer:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Open Windows Logs > Application.
  4. Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
  5. Record the application name, faulting module, and exception details.
  6. Give those details to the application’s official support channel or use the application’s official repair process.

If the disk may be damaged, back up important files and check the drive using Windows’ supported disk tools. If malware is suspected, disconnect from sensitive accounts, update Microsoft Defender, and run a full scan.

Do not download msasn1.dll separately

There is no verified Microsoft standalone msasn1.dll redistributable package. Random DLL download sites can provide the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, an unsigned replacement, or malware, and a copied file often leaves the underlying component-store or application problem unresolved.

FAQ

Is msasn1.dll safe?

A genuine copy supplied by Microsoft in a normal Windows system directory is a legitimate Windows component. Confirm the path and digital signature instead of trusting the filename alone.

Is msasn1.dll part of Windows?

Yes. It is the ASN.1 Runtime APIs component of the Microsoft Windows Operating System.

Should I copy msasn1.dll into System32?

No. Do not copy DLLs between System32, SysWOW64, and application folders. Windows repair tools should restore the correct architecture and protected system file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reinstall Visual C++ Redistributable?

Not for this DLL alone. Reinstall that runtime only when the application separately identifies a Visual C++ dependency or its official instructions require it.

Does DirectX repair msasn1.dll?

No. DirectX is not the normal package for this Windows system component.

Does .NET repair msasn1.dll?

No. .NET is not the normal source of this file. Repair Windows first and investigate the failing application.

Can I use regsvr32 msasn1.dll?

No. regsvr32 is for registerable COM and ActiveX libraries. It is not a repair method for msasn1.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does “module not found” appear when the file exists?

The application may be unable to load another dependency, may be using the wrong architecture, or may have an invalid application installation. The message does not always identify the missing file accurately.

What is the safest first fix?

Install pending Windows updates, restart, then run DISM followed by sfc /scannow from an administrator Command Prompt. Repair or reinstall the affected application afterward if only that program fails.
