If hpzlaw71.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the problem is usually an incomplete, damaged, or stale HP printer-driver installation rather than a missing Windows runtime. Do not download the DLL by itself; remove the affected HP printer package and install the correct driver for the printer and Windows architecture.
What this file actually does
hpzlaw71.dll is a Hewlett-Packard printer-driver component associated with legacy HP DeskJet and inkjet support. Its name begins with hpz because it belongs to HP’s printer-driver naming family, not because it is part of DirectX, Visual C++, .NET, or a normal Windows application.

The file is associated with the HP driver package identified by prnhp003.inf. On Windows 7-era systems, that package could appear in the Windows Driver Store and printer-driver directories. That does not make hpzlaw71.dll a universal Windows system DLL. Windows 10 or Windows 11 may report an error when an old HP queue, driver package, installer, or migrated system still references it.

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that hpzlaw71.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing, incompatible, quarantined, or inaccessible.

Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the HP printer package
This is the most likely fix. Replacing one DLL does not repair the driver’s INF registration, dependencies, services, queue, or architecture.
1. Disconnect the printer
If the printer is connected by USB, turn it off and disconnect the cable. Leave network printers disconnected from Windows during removal if practical.
2. Uninstall HP printer software
On Windows 11:
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Search for HP, the printer model, HP Printer Assistant, or related printer software.
- Select the entry and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Apps & features.
- Select the HP printer software.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
If the software is not listed:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Remove the HP printer software from Programs and Features.
3. Remove the printer
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer.
- Choose Remove device.
Removing only the printer icon may leave the driver package installed, so continue with the driver cleanup.

4. Remove the old driver package
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the affected HP driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that choice.
- Restart Windows.
If Windows refuses to remove the package because it is in use, restart first and repeat the process before reconnecting the printer.
5. Install the correct driver
Go to HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page, search for the exact printer model, and select the offered Windows version. Use the full-feature package when you need HP scanning and management tools, or the basic driver when you only need printing.
Reconnect the printer only when the installer requests it. If HP no longer provides a package for the old model and your Windows release, use the driver supplied through Windows Update or Windows’ built-in printer-driver selection when HP documents that path. Do not substitute a DLL from another model.

The repair worked if the printer installs without the missing-file message, appears under Printers & scanners, and successfully prints a test page. If the same error returns during installation, continue with the architecture and security checks below.
When updating a legacy printer manually, identifying the exact model, Windows release, and architecture can mean hunting through several old packages. For this file, reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix.
Fix 2: Confirm x86 and x64 compatibility
A 32-bit printer driver belongs on 32-bit Windows, while a 64-bit package belongs on 64-bit Windows. Do not copy an x86 hpzlaw71.dll into a 64-bit driver package or combine files from different releases.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Then download the driver offered for that architecture and exact printer model. If the installer says the package is incompatible, stop using it and locate the matching package instead.
Fix 3: Check whether the file was quarantined
Antivirus software can remove a driver component, leaving the printer package only partly installed.

- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
hpzlaw71.dll, HP printer software, or the printer installer. - Inspect the reported path and detection details.
Do not restore the file merely because its name looks correct. Restore or allow it only when the file is in an expected HP printer-driver location, has a valid Hewlett-Packard signature, and belongs to a printer package you intentionally installed. If the file appeared in an unusual application directory or arrived from an unknown installer, leave it quarantined, run a full scan, and reinstall the printer software from HP.
You can inspect a known copy with PowerShell:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:pathtohpzlaw71.dll"
Replace the path with the actual location. A valid signature supports authenticity, but it does not prove that the file belongs to the correct printer model.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when Windows Update, System File Checker, CBS logs, or a repair operation identifies hpzlaw71.dll, prnhp003.inf, or a related component as damaged. These commands are not a substitute for reinstalling a third-party HP driver.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as its source. DISM may require Windows Update access.

Success means the command completes and reports that corruption was repaired, or SFC reports that it found no integrity violations. If SFC says it could not repair some files, review the result, restart, and repeat the printer-package cleanup rather than copying files into System32.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed is frustrating when the underlying issue is a damaged printer installation. On older Windows 7 installations, the component store may require CheckSUR, System Update Readiness, installation media, or a documented Microsoft recovery procedure. Do not overwrite files in WinSxS manually.
Fix 5: Check the Driver Store and identify the affected printer
A driver can remain in the Driver Store even after the printer icon is removed. To look for the file:

An expected result may show a Windows driver-store or printer-driver path. The location alone does not identify the active printer.

To list installed printer drivers:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select Print server properties if available.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Match HP driver names with the installed printer model.
- Remove obsolete entries only after confirming they are not used by another queue.
You can also open Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the affected HP device or a warning icon.
- Right-click the device and choose Uninstall device.
- Restart, then reinstall the correct HP package.
Do not delete a working shared printer driver simply because it has an HP name.

If you no longer own or use the printer, the error may come from an old HP utility, scheduled task, startup entry, or application that still expects the driver.
Uninstall unused HP software through Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Then check Task Manager > Startup apps for obsolete HP entries and disable only those you recognize. Remove the old printer from Printers & scanners and restart.
If the message appears only when launching one old program, repair or uninstall that program as well. The program that installed the printer component may be the real caller, even when Windows displays only the DLL name.
Why regsvr32 usually will not help
Do not run:
regsvr32 hpzlaw71.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver payload DLL is not automatically a self-registering COM component. Registering it will not recreate the HP INF package, restore missing dependencies, or repair a printer queue. Use the HP installer instead.
Common questions
Is hpzlaw71.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file?
No. It is HP printer-driver code associated most clearly with legacy Windows printer support. A current Windows installation may encounter the file through an old migrated driver or printer package, but it should not be treated as a universal Windows runtime.

Should I copy hpzlaw71.dll into System32?
No. The documented context is the HP printer Driver Store and printer-driver directories, not a guaranteed System32 location. Manual copying can create an architecture mismatch and leave the driver package broken.
Is hpzlaw71.dll malware?
The filename alone does not prove that. Verify the path, digital signature, and connection to an installed HP printer package. A copy in an unexpected directory, without a valid signature, deserves a malware scan rather than restoration.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
Check for a missing dependency, damaged package registration, wrong architecture, or quarantine event. Reinstall the complete printer package instead of replacing the individual file.
What if HP no longer offers my printer driver?
Use Windows Update or the built-in printer driver only when supported for that model and Windows release. Otherwise, the practical choices may be keeping the printer on a compatible older system or replacing unsupported hardware. Do not use a random DLL download as a substitute.
Can System Restore help?
It can help when the failure began immediately after a driver installation or Windows change. Open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore, choose a restore point from before the failure, and review the programs and drivers that will be rolled back. Restore does not replace a correct HP driver installation and may undo other system changes.
