The exact message may say “The program can’t start because hpzlew71.dll is missing from your computer,” “Error loading hpzlew71.dll,” or “Failed to load hpzlew71.dll.” hpzlew71.dll is an obscure HP printer-driver component, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, or core Windows DLL.
The safest repair is to identify the HP printer or leftover printer package that is calling the file, remove the damaged entry, and reinstall the complete driver through Windows Update or HP’s support software. Do not download the DLL by itself and copy it into System32.

Which fix applies to you
Use the situation that matches what you see:
- The error appears while adding, printing to, or repairing an HP printer: remove the printer and reinstall its driver.
- The printer was removed long ago, but the message appears at login or startup: remove the stale printer package, queue, startup entry, or scheduled task.
- Windows Security or another antivirus quarantined the file: inspect quarantine, then reinstall the complete HP package rather than restoring an isolated DLL.
- The file exists in
DriverStoreFileRepository, but Windows still reports an error: the package may be incomplete, mismatched, or missing a dependency. Remove and reinstall the matching driver. - The error remains after every HP printer is gone: find the executable making the request. It may be an old HP utility, a scheduled task, a print queue, or a malicious file using the name.
- SFC reports corruption: repair Windows components first, but remember that SFC does not reliably replace a third-party HP driver DLL.
What hpzlew71.dll belongs to
Public file metadata describes hpzlew71.dll as HP DeskJet and associates it with legacy HP DeskJet, Photosmart, and Officejet printer packages. It is listed among files in an HP package containing prnhp003.inf, and Windows may store that package beneath the DriverStore.

The exact model that installed the DLL cannot always be identified from the filename alone. Older HP Photosmart and Officejet packages are possible, but the reliable way to identify the caller is to check your installed printers, driver packages, event logs, and the file’s digital signature.
The error can also be misleading. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by hpzlew71.dll is missing, not necessarily that the named file itself has disappeared.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the affected HP printer
This is the correct first repair when the error is connected with printing or printer installation.

Remove the printer
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the HP printer connected with the error.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
If several old HP printers are listed, remove only the one you recognize first. If the error began after replacing an HP printer, remove the obsolete entry as well.
Add it again through Windows
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches.
- Choose the printer when it appears.
- Allow Windows to obtain and install the driver.
- Open the printer’s page and select Print a test page.
If the test page prints and the DLL message does not return, the damaged printer association was the problem.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update first for printer drivers. If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, download the complete package for the exact model from HP’s official printer support portal. Search by the printer model, product number, or serial number, and select the package for your version and architecture of Windows.

Do not install a driver for a similar model merely because its name looks close. A legacy 32-bit driver component must remain with the compatible package; replacing it with a file from another model or release can produce a different loading error.

Check the connection before changing drivers:
- Confirm the printer is powered on.
- For USB printers, disconnect and reconnect the cable directly to the computer.
- For network printers, confirm that the computer and printer use the same network.
- Return to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device again.
- If the printer still does not appear, choose the option to add it manually and follow Windows’ prompts for its port.
After installation, print a test page. If printing works but the original message returns at login, continue with the stale-package checks below.

Fix 2: Remove an obsolete HP driver package
Removing a printer does not always remove its driver package. A leftover package can be called during spooler startup or by an old HP utility.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Scroll down and select Print server properties if that option is available.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Look for an HP driver that clearly belongs to the removed printer.
- Confirm that no remaining printer uses it.
- Select the obsolete driver and choose Remove.
- If Windows asks whether to remove the driver and driver package, proceed only when you are certain it is no longer needed.
- Restart Windows.
The exact controls vary by Windows edition and by driver type. Do not remove every HP entry as a shortcut. Another working printer may depend on one of those packages.
If the classic interface is not available, open Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Print Class if present.
- Right-click the obsolete printer and select Uninstall device.
- Do not select an option to delete driver software unless you have identified the package and confirmed that no other queue uses it.
- Restart and reinstall the required printer.
Fix 3: Check Windows Update and the HP package
Windows may have installed only part of an old printer package, especially after a repair, upgrade, or printer migration.

- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
- Return to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Remove and add the HP printer again.
If Windows Update supplies no usable driver, use HP’s official driver page and select the exact printer model. Prefer the full driver package rather than a DLL copied from another computer.
Some older models use Windows in-box printer drivers instead of a current HP package. If HP no longer offers software for your Windows release, try adding the printer through Windows and select the compatible in-box driver. Confirm success with a test page.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined a legitimate driver component.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
hpzlew71.dllor the HP printer package. - Review its path, publisher, and detection details.
Restore the file only when it is clearly part of a genuine HP package and the printer cannot work without it. A safer approach is usually to reinstall the complete driver from Windows Update or HP, then run a new scan.
A filename alone does not prove authenticity. Be suspicious if the file is in a random user folder, an unrelated application directory, or a location with no connection to printing. Check its Properties → Digital Signatures tab. An unexpected signer, no valid signature, or an unrelated program loading the file warrants a Microsoft Defender scan and a second-opinion security scan.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows itself appears damaged, updates fail, or several protected components are reporting errors. They are secondary for hpzlew71.dll, because the file belongs to an HP driver package rather than Windows.

- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC checks protected Windows files. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the printer again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the printer-package repair rather than assuming SFC can supply the correct HP build.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run:
regsvr32 hpzlew71.dll
merely because Windows names a DLL. Microsoft’s regsvr32 command is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Printer-driver components are normally installed and managed by the driver package, print subsystem, and spooler.
If regsvr32 reports that the module could not be found, the error may concern a dependency. If it reports that the entry point is missing, the command simply does not apply. Reinstall the complete printer package instead.

Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is also not the normal solution. There is no reliable evidence that this HP printer DLL belongs to any of those runtimes.

When the message appears at every login:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an old HP utility only if you recognize it and no longer use the associated printer.
- Open Settings → System → Notifications and check whether the message identifies an application.
- Inspect Task Scheduler by searching for it from Start.
- Review Task Scheduler Library for clearly obsolete HP tasks.
- Check Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners for remaining queues.
- Restart the Print Spooler from the Services app only after closing printing applications.
If the DLL error persists after all HP printers and packages are removed, identify the exact executable named in the dialog or Event Viewer. That caller may be an orphaned HP utility, a scheduled task, or malware impersonating the filename.
What not to do
- Do not download
hpzlew71.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy it into
C:WindowsSystem32or an application folder. - Do not mix a file from another HP printer, Windows release, or architecture.
- Do not delete arbitrary DriverStore folders manually.
- Do not assume that a file’s presence under a Windows directory makes it a Microsoft file.
- Do not keep running SFC when the evidence points to a damaged third-party driver package.
A standalone DLL can have the wrong version, wrong architecture, missing dependencies, or malicious modifications. Even a genuine copy may leave the printer package internally inconsistent.

Prevention
Keep only the HP printer queues and utilities you still use. When replacing a printer, remove its old queue and package before installing the replacement. Use Windows Update or HP’s exact-model support page, and avoid driver collections that do not identify the printer model and operating system.
