rgss300.dll is a genuine RPG Maker VX Ace runtime library, and this error usually means the game cannot find its RGSS3 runtime files. It is not a Windows system component, so downloading it into System32 is not the correct repair.

Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches your situation:
- Every RPG Maker VX Ace game fails: Install or repair the official RPG Maker VX Ace Run Time Package.
- Only one game fails: Reinstall that game, fully extract it again, or use the launcher’s file-verification feature.
- The file is visible but still will not load: Check
Game.ini, theSystemfolder, antivirus history, and dependent files. - The message says “specified module could not be found”: The named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing.
- The problem began after a mod or manual file replacement: Restore the original game files.
- Several unrelated programs also fail: Check Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- The game starts but crashes during graphics rendering: Investigate compatibility or graphics drivers. A driver reinstall is not the normal fix for a missing-DLL message.
Fix 1: Install the official VX Ace Runtime Package
Small RPG Maker VX Ace games often depend on shared runtime files instead of including every file in their own folder. The official package is called the RPG Maker VX Ace Run Time Package and includes DLL files used by VX Ace games.
#1 Best Overall
- Open the official RPG Maker Run Time Package page in your browser.
- Download the package named
RPGVXAce_RTP.zip. - Open File Explorer and locate the downloaded ZIP file.
- Right-click it and select Extract All.
- Open the extracted
RTP100folder. - Double-click
Setup.exe. - Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart the affected game.
Test the game after installation. If it starts, the missing shared runtime was the cause.
If Windows blocks the installer, right-click Setup.exe, select Properties, choose Unblock if that option appears, select Apply, and run it again. You can also right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
Do not install a runtime package for RPG Maker XP, VX, MV, or MZ merely because its name looks similar. Those products use different runtime structures.

Fix 2: Repair the individual game
If the VX Ace runtime is installed and other VX Ace games work, the broken game is more likely incomplete, damaged, or modified.
Reinstall from the original source
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the game if it has an uninstall entry.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or install the game again from its legitimate publisher, store, or installer.
- Start the game before adding mods or replacement files.
If the game is a portable download rather than an installed application, delete the incomplete extracted folder and extract a fresh copy. Do not run the game directly from inside the ZIP archive.
Verify files through the launcher
Many store launchers provide a repair command. Open the launcher, select the game, open its Properties, Manage, or similar menu, and choose Verify, Validate, or Repair files. The exact wording varies.
Rank #2
After verification, launch the unmodified game. If it works before a mod is installed, add modifications one at a time and test after each change.
Fix 3: Check Game.ini and the System folder
A VX Ace game normally has a structure similar to this:
Game folder
├── Game.exe
├── Game.ini
└── System
└── RGSS300.dll
The library is normally referenced by Game.ini beside the executable.
- Open the game’s main folder.
- Right-click
Game.ini. - Select Open with, then choose Notepad.
- Look for entries resembling:
[Game]
RTP=RPGVXAce
Library=SystemRGSS300.dll
- Check whether the referenced file exists at the corresponding path.
- Close Notepad without changing the file unless you know the distribution is inconsistent.
Some VX Ace games use RGSS301.dll or another RGSS3 library. RGSS300.dll and RGSS301.dll are not interchangeable just because their names are similar. Never rename one to the other as a workaround.
If Game.ini requests RGSS300.dll but the game contains only another RGSS library, reinstall the game or contact its publisher. The correct fix is to restore the library supplied for that game, not to substitute an unrelated copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a runtime file, particularly in obscure or modified indie-game distributions. Do not assume this happened until you check the security history.
Rank #3
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the game folder or
RGSS300.dll. - Confirm that the game came from a trustworthy publisher or store.
- Scan the complete installer or archive.
- Restore the file only if the source is trusted and the detection is understood.
If the file is repeatedly detected, do not blindly create an exclusion. Obtain a clean copy from the publisher and report the detection to the publisher and antivirus vendor.
A restored file may still fail if other game files were removed. Repair or reinstall the complete game after dealing with the quarantine event.
Fix 5: Diagnose a dependency or architecture problem
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that rgss300.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load a dependency required by it.
First, reinstall the complete game and the official VX Ace runtime. This restores the correct group of files and is safer than trying to identify individual dependencies manually.
Visual C++ Redistributable
Visual C++ Redistributable is not the default fix for every RGSS300 error. Install it only when the game’s documentation, publisher, or a dependency diagnostic identifies it as required. Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable documentation and match the package architecture to the game executable.
Do not infer the architecture from the DLL filename alone. A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit applications, and the application determines which architecture it needs. Windows on ARM may also run compatible x86 or x64 software through emulation, but an old game can still have compatibility limitations.
Windows compatibility settings
For an older game:
- Right-click the game executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try an appropriate older Windows mode.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the game again.
Compatibility mode will not recreate a missing runtime file. Use it only after restoring the game and RTP files.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC and DISM repair Windows component corruption. They do not normally restore a third-party RPG Maker DLL, so use them after repairing the game and runtime.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, retest after restarting. If it reports that it could not repair everything, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Persistent Windows-wide failures justify checking Windows Update and Microsoft’s repair guidance.
Repeating SFC without recording what changed makes it difficult to tell whether the game repair worked. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; reinstalling the affected game or runtime remains the definitive fix when the problem is limited to that game.
Fix 7: Reinstall drivers only for rendering crashes
A graphics-driver reinstall is not a first-line response to “rgss300.dll missing.” Consider it only when the game launches and then crashes, displays corrupted graphics, or fails during rendering.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To reinstall a driver:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer.
- Restart again and test the game.
Do not remove unrelated devices while troubleshooting this DLL. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the relevant package, while installing updates requires the full version; a driver change will not replace a missing VX Ace runtime file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 does not fix this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 rgss300.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. rgss300.dll is a private game/runtime library, not a component that normally needs registration.
You may see an error stating that the module loaded but DllRegisterServer was not found. That result does not repair the game and does not prove that the DLL is corrupt.
Best Value
Do not download the DLL separately
Avoid generic DLL download sites. An isolated file may be malicious, the wrong architecture, a different RGSS build, or missing companion files. It may also cause a second error after masking the original packaging problem.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use these sources instead:
- The official RPG Maker VX Ace Run Time Package for shared VX Ace runtime files.
- The game’s legitimate installer or publisher.
- A store launcher’s file-verification or repair function.
- Microsoft’s official pages for Windows components and Visual C++ packages.
Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The game normally expects its runtime in the game’s System folder or through the installed RTP. Global replacement can create version conflicts.
Prevention and final checks
Keep the original installer or a verified game archive. Extract portable games completely before launching them, and avoid deleting the System folder when cleaning unused files.
Use this final test:
- If every VX Ace game now launches, the RTP installation was the likely cause.
- If other VX Ace games work but one still fails, repair that game’s files or remove its incompatible mod.
- If
Game.ininames a library that the distribution does not contain, obtain a corrected build from the publisher. - If the file exists but the loader still reports a missing module, investigate dependencies rather than renaming DLLs.
- If unrelated applications also fail, continue with Windows repair and hardware troubleshooting.
- If the game is encrypted, do not unpack or alter it to obtain the DLL. Request an intact build from the publisher.
FAQ
Is rgss300.dll part of Windows?
No. It belongs to the RPG Maker VX Ace RGSS3 runtime and is normally supplied by the game or the official VX Ace RTP.
Is rgss300.dll the same as rgss301.dll?
No. They are different RGSS3 library names and builds. Use the exact file referenced by the game’s Game.ini.
Will Windows 11 or 64-bit Windows require a different DLL?
Not automatically. The game executable determines the required architecture. Reinstall the correct game and runtime rather than selecting a DLL based on the Windows edition.
What if the game fails on Windows on ARM?
Restore the complete game and RTP first. If it still fails, check the publisher’s compatibility guidance. Older software may have limitations under emulation.
Should I use System Restore?
Only for a recent, system-wide regression affecting multiple programs. It is not the normal solution for one missing game file.
Why did the error change after I restored the DLL?
The loader may have passed the first missing layer and reached another missing dependency or configuration problem. Reinstall the complete runtime and inspect the new message rather than replacing more files randomly.
