A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11hpzpaw72.dll is an older HP Print Preview component used by an HP printer-driver package. If Windows says hpzpaw72.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the HP printer software that installed it rather than downloading a loose DLL.
The exact printer model cannot be identified from the filename alone. Evidence associates the file with the older prnhp004.inf printer package, including Windows 7-era Driver Store entries. It is not established as a general Windows system file, Visual C++ component, DirectX file, or .NET component.

The usual causes are an incomplete HP printer installation, a failed driver update, a Windows upgrade, disk cleanup, antivirus quarantine, or an old HP startup reference left behind after the printer was removed.

Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the HP printer package
This is the most reliable repair because it restores the DLL together with the correct driver files, dependencies, architecture, catalog signatures, and Driver Store metadata.
1. Identify the old HP printer
Look for clues in the error window, installed applications, printer history, or the computer’s previous hardware:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Note every HP printer listed.
- Select a likely printer and check its name and model.
Then check installed software:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Look for entries beginning with HP, Hewlett-Packard, or the printer’s model name.
- Write down the exact model before removing anything.
If no printer is listed, continue anyway. An old HP utility, print monitor, scheduled task, or startup entry may still be requesting the file.
2. Disconnect a USB printer
If the printer uses USB, turn it off and disconnect the cable before uninstalling the package. This helps prevent Windows from immediately detecting the device and reinstalling the incomplete driver during removal.
Network and wireless printers can remain powered off while you remove their software.
3. Uninstall HP software
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the HP printer model.
- Select the HP full-feature software or printer driver.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the HP removal prompts.
- Repeat for related HP printer entries if they clearly belong to the same device.
Do not remove unrelated HP utilities unless you know they belong to the affected printer.
4. Remove the old printer queue
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select the old HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
If the queue refuses to disappear:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Stop.
- Remove the printer from Printers & scanners.
- Return to Print Spooler, right-click it, and select Start.
5. Restart and install the correct package
Restart Windows before downloading the replacement package. Then use HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page, search for the exact printer model, select Windows 10 or Windows 11 as appropriate, and download the current full-feature driver or HP-recommended setup package.

During installation:
- Run the installer normally, or right-click it and select Run as administrator if setup cannot write the driver.
- Connect the USB cable only when the installer requests it.
- For a wireless printer, select the correct network and complete the setup wizard.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Open a document and print a test page.
The repair worked if the original application starts without the DLL message and the printer appears with the correct model name. If the same message returns immediately, the old HP package may not be the actual requester.
If you regularly deal with several stale or failed printer drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through hardware entries and guessing which driver is outdated; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation and repair require the full version. Reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
A Windows upgrade or driver-update compatibility problem can leave older printer components incomplete.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check for updates again until Windows reports that none are available.
- Reinstall the HP printer package using the procedure above.
Do not assume that a Windows update alone will restore hpzpaw72.dll. Windows updates and the HP installer repair different parts of the system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when the HP reinstall fails, Windows reports broader file corruption, or an SFC scan mentions the printer package.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. These commands do not replace every third-party printer DLL, so a successful scan does not remove the need to reinstall HP software.
If DISM reports that the source files cannot be found, install pending Windows updates and try again. If SFC reports corruption involving prnhp004.inf or hpzpaw72.dll, treat that as evidence of a damaged printer-driver package and reinstall the HP driver rather than copying a file manually.
When you repeatedly run repair commands without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected system problems in one scan; its free scan identifies issues, while automated repair requires the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the HP application that owns this DLL.

SFC /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:windows
DISM /image:D: /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Replace D: if Windows is assigned another drive letter in recovery mode. Restart after the commands finish.
The modern /RestoreHealth workflow does not apply to every Windows 7 installation. On Windows 7, use the repair method appropriate to that release instead of assuming the Windows 10 or Windows 11 command will work.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a legitimate older printer component, or a damaged file may have triggered a detection.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
hpzpaw72.dll, the HP printer package, or the affected installer. - Check the detection details and file location.
Restore the file only when it is clearly part of a verified HP installation and the security product identifies it as a false positive. A safer approach is to reinstall the package from HP and scan the computer afterward.
If the file appears in an unexpected application folder, a temporary directory, or a random download location, do not restore it automatically. Run a full security scan and remove the obsolete application that is requesting it.
Fix 5: Check for a stale HP reference
If no HP printer remains installed but the error appears at every logon, an orphaned startup entry or scheduled task may still be calling the old file.
Inspect Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps on Windows 11, or the Startup tab on Windows 10.
- Look for an old HP utility or print monitor.
- Disable it temporarily.
- Restart Windows.
Inspect scheduled tasks
- Press Windows + S.
- Search for Task Scheduler.
- Open it.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for tasks clearly associated with the removed HP printer.
- Check the Actions tab before disabling a task.
- Disable only an obsolete HP task that points to a missing program or DLL.
Do not delete unfamiliar tasks based only on their names. If the message disappears after disabling an HP entry, uninstall the related HP software properly rather than leaving a broken startup reference in place.

Fix 6: Check Device Manager for a damaged printer driver
Device Manager can reveal a failed or duplicate printer installation.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues and Printers.
- Look for the HP model, an unknown device, or a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected entry and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove the driver package, select that option only when you are certain it belongs to the old HP printer.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct HP package again.
Do not use Device Manager to select a random DLL or force an unrelated driver. It can remove a device entry, but the printer manufacturer’s installer is still responsible for restoring the complete package.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this file
A printer-driver DLL is not automatically a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. The regsvr32 command works when a DLL provides a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
Therefore, this is not a first-line repair:
regsvr32 hpzpaw72.dll
If it fails, that does not prove the file is defective. The DLL may not support registration, may have missing dependencies, or may be the wrong architecture for the command being used. Use the HP installer instead.
What not to do
Do not download hpzpaw72.dll from a DLL website
A manually downloaded file can contain malware, belong to the wrong package, use the wrong architecture, or have a different version from the rest of the printer driver. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or the Driver Store can create a mismatched installation and usually leaves the original broken reference untouched.
Use the exact HP printer model’s official driver page. If HP no longer provides the old driver, use Windows’ built-in compatible printer driver or an HP-supported current package.
Do not treat it as a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET problem
There is no established connection between this filename and those runtimes. Repairing them will not normally restore an HP print-preview component unless the error separately names a missing runtime file.
Best Value
- Original HP Ink is engineered to work with HP printers to provide consistent quality, reliability and value

- Cartridge yield (approx.): 2,000 pages black, 700 pages per color
- Up to 2x more prints with Original HP Ink vs. non-Original HP Ink
- 82% of HP ink cartridges are manufactured with recycled plastic
Do not use registry cleaners
Registry cleaners can remove useful printer associations while failing to restore the driver files. Remove the HP application and printer queue through Windows, then reinstall the complete package.
If the error remains after reinstalling
The error’s requesting program matters. Note the application name shown in the dialog, then:
- Open Event Viewer by searching for it from Start.
- Check Windows Logs > Application around the time of the failure.
- Look for the executable or service that attempted to load
hpzpaw72.dll. - Repair or uninstall that specific program if it is not HP software.
- Check the file path in the event details.
If the requester is an old HP utility, remove the utility and its startup entry. If the requester is an unrelated application, reinstalling HP software repeatedly will not solve that application’s broken reference.
A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a file copied from another package. Reinstall the complete driver and verify the installer source. Do not overwrite the DLL with a different web download.
FAQ
Is hpzpaw72.dll a Windows system file?
It may have been staged with older Windows printer-driver packages, but it should not be treated as a generic protected Windows DLL or a core component of current Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Recommended Free Tools
Which HP printer installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the exact model. The strongest package clue is prnhp004.inf, so review old printer names and HP software entries before removing and reinstalling the matching package.
Is it malware?
There is no specific evidence that this file is malware. Any DLL found in an unexpected location deserves a security scan, while a copy restored by a verified HP installer is more trustworthy than one downloaded separately.
Is the error related to a game?
Generic DLL listings may mention games, but there is no credible evidence connecting this file to a game. The HP printer-driver explanation is much better supported.
Should I use System Restore?
Use it only for a clearly dated failure that remains after removing and reinstalling the printer package and running Windows repairs. It is not the first-line fix.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need both 32-bit and 64-bit copies?
Public records conflict about the file’s architecture. Let the exact HP installer choose the correct files for Windows and the printer package rather than mixing copies manually.
