The 60-second answer
exiv2.dll is a third-party library used by Exiv2, an open-source toolkit for reading and writing image metadata such as EXIF, IPTC, and XMP. It is normally installed inside the photo, image, RAW-processing, preview, or Python application that needs it.

It is not a Windows system DLL. Do not download it from a random DLL site, copy it into System32, or try to register it with regsvr32.
The safest repair is:
- Identify the application that displayed the error.
- Run that application’s repair, verification, or file-repair option.
- Reinstall the application from its official source if repair is unavailable.
- Check antivirus quarantine.
- Install or repair the correct Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable if the application needs it.
- Confirm that the application and its DLL use the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
What exiv2.dll does
Exiv2 is a C++ library and command-line toolkit for handling image metadata. A program can use it to read camera information, dates, GPS tags, copyright data, and other metadata from image files, or to write changes back to those files.
Windows builds of Exiv2 can use different filenames. One application may contain exiv2.dll; another may use libexiv2.dll; a private build may use a different name altogether. Similar filenames do not mean that the files are interchangeable.
The file is usually beside the application executable or in one of the application’s private library folders. It is not normally supplied by Windows in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
The application that installed the file is the authoritative source. A current Exiv2 developer package is not automatically a valid replacement for an older or privately built library required by another program.
First identify the affected application
The filename alone does not identify the owner. Start with the program that was open when the message appeared.
Check the error dialog and shortcut
Look at the dialog title and the application icon. Then:
- Close the error.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable’s folder.
If the shortcut no longer works:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Look for the program’s executable.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
You can also search the application’s installation folder for both exiv2.dll and libexiv2.dll. Finding neither does not prove the file was deleted. The program may use a renamed private build, or Windows may be failing to load a dependency of the DLL.
Ask what changed
The likely cause is easier to identify if you remember whether the error began after:
- An application update or failed reinstall
- Antivirus quarantine
- Disk cleanup
- Moving the program folder
- Restoring files from a backup
- Copying only part of a portable application
- Installing a different 32-bit or 64-bit build
Record the exact error, executable path, application version, Windows architecture, and the full DLL path before changing files.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely fix because the application should install the matching Exiv2 library and its neighboring dependencies together.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the application’s repair option
Check the program’s launcher or settings first. Look for Repair, Verify files, Scan and repair, or Restore installation.
For a normally installed Windows application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If the program has a separate launcher, use its repair or verification feature instead. A launcher can restore files that Windows’ generic repair option cannot.
A successful repair usually means the original application opens and the image or metadata operation works again. If the same message remains, continue rather than copying a DLL from another program.
Reinstall from the official source
Before uninstalling, back up project files, catalogs, presets, license information, and user settings.

- Uninstall the affected application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s official vendor or project source.
- Install the same architecture as before unless the vendor specifically instructs you to change it.
- Start the application and repeat the action that caused the error.
For a portable program, restore the complete original folder or extract a complete official package. Do not copy only exiv2.dll; the program may require other libraries from the same package.
If reinstalling restores libexiv2.dll rather than exiv2.dll, use the file supplied by that application. Do not rename it or mix it with a library from another installation.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a DLL, especially after an application update changes its contents.
Check Microsoft Defender Protection History
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry associated with the affected application or its installation folder.
Restore a quarantined file only if all of these are true:

- The file is part of that application’s original installation.
- You have confirmed that the detection is a false positive.
Do not disable antivirus protection just to make the program start. If Defender removes the file again, reinstall the application and contact the application vendor or Microsoft through the appropriate security-reporting process.
If the file is restored but the error continues, repair or reinstall the application. The restored file may be incomplete, incompatible, or missing a dependency.
Fix 3: Install or repair Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
A Windows loader message can name exiv2.dll even when the real problem is a dependency that Exiv2 needs. A documented Python error uses wording similar to:
FileNotFoundError: Could not find module '...libsite-packagespyexiv2libexiv2.dll' (or one of its dependencies).
This means “module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent.
Download the Visual C++ Redistributable only from Microsoft’s official download page. Choose the package that matches the application:
- A 32-bit application needs
vc_redist.x86.exe, even on 64-bit Windows. - A 64-bit application needs
vc_redist.x64.exe. - An ARM64 application needs
vc_redist.arm64.exe.
To determine an application’s architecture, check its vendor documentation or installation package. If you use both 32-bit and 64-bit applications, installing both x86 and x64 packages can be appropriate.
After downloading:
- Close the affected application.
- Run the matching redistributable installer.
- Accept the license terms.
- Choose Install or Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application.
If the redistributable is already installed:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Select the relevant entry.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Repair, if offered.
- Restart Windows.
Do not assume Visual C++ is always the cause. The application may instead have a missing private library, an architecture mismatch, or an incompatible Exiv2 build.
Repeatedly hunting runtime versions and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the owning application remains the definitive fix for an application DLL.

Fix 4: Confirm architecture and file compatibility
A 32-bit program cannot use a 64-bit replacement DLL, and a 64-bit program cannot use a 32-bit replacement. The same filename does not guarantee the same binary interface.

Check these combinations:
| Application | Required library and runtime |
|---|---|
| 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows | 32-bit Exiv2 build and Visual C++ x86 |
| 64-bit application | 64-bit Exiv2 build and Visual C++ x64 |
| ARM64 application | ARM64-compatible files and Visual C++ ARM64 |
Use the application’s own installer or official package to correct the architecture. Do not download a DLL with the same name from another program, and do not replace exiv2.dll with libexiv2.dll merely because both contain “exiv2.”
If a program was moved to another drive, launched from a partial backup, or copied without its neighboring files, restore the complete directory or reinstall it.
Fix 5: Update the application and related drivers
First install the application’s latest compatible update from its official source. An update may restore a corrected library, but it can also expose a missing runtime if the previous installation was incomplete.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Device drivers are not normally the direct source of exiv2.dll. Consider them only if the application also crashes during image display, RAW decoding, or GPU-accelerated work.
Update drivers through:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
For the most reliable package, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Avoid replacing the Exiv2 DLL while trying to solve a graphics-driver problem.
Manually checking several hardware vendors and matching driver packages takes time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the application that owns exiv2.dll.
Fix 6: Use DISM and SFC only as a Windows-repair fallback
exiv2.dll is normally an application file, so System File Checker will not usually recreate it. Use these commands when other Windows components are also damaged or the failure began after broader system corruption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the original application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but exiv2.dll still fails, return to the application repair and Visual C++ steps. These commands repair protected Windows components, not the private files of a third-party application.
If the problem began immediately after an update or installation change, back up important data and consider Settings → System → Recovery and the available Windows recovery options. System Restore is a fallback, not a replacement for reinstalling the owning program.
Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
Do not run:
regsvr32 exiv2.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM or ActiveX registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary Exiv2 runtime or image-metadata library is not normally a COM server.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Registration will not restore a missing dependency, fix a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch, or place the correct file in the application directory. It commonly produces an entry-point or registration error.
Do not copy the file into System32
Do not copy exiv2.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or another global directory.
Applications often require different Exiv2 builds or application-specific ABIs. Global copying can cause version conflicts and can create unsafe DLL-loading paths. Windows resolves dependencies using defined search behavior, and an attacker can abuse unsafe search locations for DLL preloading.
The correct location is the directory supplied by the owning application. Restore that complete installation instead.

Python-specific guidance
If the error appears while importing pyexiv2, using ctypes, or running a Python script:
- Note the Python interpreter and virtual-environment path.
- Confirm whether the package contains
exiv2.dllorlibexiv2.dll. - Recreate or repair the virtual environment.
- Reinstall the package using its documented Windows installation method.
- Install or repair the matching Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Test the import again from the same environment.
Do not place a random DLL on PATH or copy a desktop application’s library into site-packages. Python wheels and native extensions must use compatible builds, dependencies, and architecture.
If the error remains
Collect these details before contacting the application developer:
- Full error text
- Application name and version
- Executable path
- Expected DLL path
- Whether
exiv2.dllorlibexiv2.dllis present - Windows 10 or Windows 11 architecture
- Whether the file was quarantined
- Whether repair, reinstall, and Visual C++ repair changed the message
A reputable dependency-inspection utility can help identify a subordinate missing DLL, but use it diagnostically and obtain it from a trusted source. Do not use the result as a reason to download individual DLL files from an unknown site.
FAQ
Is exiv2.dll part of Windows?
No. It belongs to Exiv2 or to a third-party application that bundled or rebuilt Exiv2.
Which program installed exiv2.dll?
The filename does not identify one universal program. Check the error dialog, shortcut target, Task Manager, and application folders to find the owner.
Can I download exiv2.dll separately?
Avoid random DLL download sites sites. They may provide the wrong version, architecture, or a malicious replacement, and the missing dependency would remain unresolved. Obtain the complete application package from its official source.
Should I use the current Exiv2 package?
Only if the application’s developer specifically requires it. A current developer distribution is not guaranteed to replace an older private library used by another application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy does the message say “or one of its dependencies”?
Windows may find exiv2.dll but fail to load a library that it depends on. Visual C++ Redistributable, architecture, neighboring application DLLs, and ABI compatibility can all matter.
Will installing x64 Visual C++ fix a 32-bit application?
No. A 32-bit application needs the x86 redistributable, even on 64-bit Windows. Install the architecture that matches the application.
Is regsvr32 a fix?
Usually not. Exiv2 is normally a runtime library, not a COM or ActiveX server.
Can SFC restore exiv2.dll?
Normally no. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. Repair or reinstall the application that owns this file.
