“The program can’t start because hpzvuw72.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “Error loading hpzvuw72.dll” or “The specified module could not be found” on Windows 11 or Windows 10.
hpzvuw72.dll is associated with older HP printer software, not with Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a normal Windows application. The safest repair is to restore the complete HP printer package for the exact printer model, not to download this DLL by itself.

Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches when the error appears:
- During printer setup or after reinstalling HP software: reinstall the complete package for the exact HP printer model.
- After removing HP software: uninstall the remaining HP application, startup entry, printer queue, and driver package.
- After antivirus removed the file: inspect Protection History, then reinstall the signed HP package rather than restoring an unknown copy.
- After restoring or cloning Windows: reinstall the printer software using the correct Windows and system architecture.
- At every boot, when the printer is no longer used: remove the orphaned HP startup component and related software.
- After a Windows update or system repair: check the Driver Store, run DISM and SFC if Windows components may be damaged, and then reinstall the HP package.
- When the file is present but the error remains: the named DLL may have a missing dependency, an incompatible architecture, or an obsolete program still trying to load it.
What hpzvuw72.dll is
Public file inventories associate hpzvuw72.dll with HP UI, a user-interface component found in historical HP printer-driver packages. Evidence also connects it with older Windows 7-era packages using prnhp004.inf, including a published HP Photosmart C5500-series driver listing.
That does not establish a complete list of supported printer models. HP does not currently publish a definitive support page that documents this DLL by filename or identifies every package that used it.

The hpz prefix is consistent with HP printer software naming. It does not mean that the file is a general Windows component.
You might find the file under a Windows Driver Store path or inside a printer driver directory. Windows can stage third-party driver packages in the Driver Store, but that does not make every file there part of Windows itself.
Historical records show more than one file size and conflicting architecture information. Do not select a replacement based only on filename, size, or a “latest version” label.

Fix 1: Reinstall the complete HP printer package
This is the most likely fix when the printer is still in use.
Identify the printer model
Check the label on the printer, its control panel, or the existing Windows printer entry:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Record the exact model name.
If the printer does not appear, check the original purchase record, the printer label, or any surviving HP application.
Download the correct package
- Open HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select Windows 10 or Windows 11 as appropriate.
- Confirm the available package’s system architecture when HP provides that choice.
- Prefer the recommended full-feature driver and software package when available.
- Download it from HP and run the installer.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > your printer > Print a test page.
HP describes full-feature packages as including printer drivers, tools, and HP Printer Assistant. Basic drivers generally provide core printing functionality without the complete HP utility set.

If the installer says the printer is unsupported, use the current package offered for that model or try Windows’ built-in printer driver. Many printers receive a built-in driver when connected or added through Windows.
Check whether the repair worked
The error should stop appearing when the HP program or printer utility starts. The printer should remain installed, print a test page, and open its HP utility without reporting a missing DLL.
If the same error returns, continue with the caller-identification and architecture checks below. Reinstalling a different DLL file is not the next step.

If the printer is gone, restoring hpzvuw72.dll may only preserve an unwanted startup error.
Uninstall HP applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for HP.
- Uninstall the HP printer application, HP Printer Assistant, or the software associated with the old printer.
- Restart Windows.
On older Windows installations:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the obsolete HP software.
- Select Uninstall.
Remove the printer and queue
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the old printer.
- Select Remove.

Then check Control Panel > Devices and Printers for a remaining copy.
Disable an orphaned startup entry
If the error appears during every boot:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an HP entry whose publisher or file path matches the old printer software.
- Select it and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Do not disable an entry solely because its name contains HP. Open its file location or inspect its properties first. If the path points to a clearly obsolete HP printer directory, removing the related application is preferable to copying a replacement DLL.
Fix 3: Check the full path and identify the caller
The error dialog may not identify the program that requested the DLL. The caller determines whether you need a driver repair or only cleanup.

Check Task Manager
If the error appears at startup:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Right-click suspicious HP entries.
- Select Open file location or Properties.
- Record the executable name and folder.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the same time as the DLL message.
- Check the application name, faulting module, and file path.
A path under an HP printer application folder or a Windows Driver Store package is plausible. A copy under a random temporary directory, a user-download folder, or an unrelated application directory requires caution.
“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that hpzvuw72.dll is present but one of its dependencies is missing. If reinstalling the complete HP package does not help, inspect the application named in Event Viewer and repair or remove that application.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
If the file disappeared suddenly, Windows Security may have quarantined it.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to the HP printer software.
- Review the original path, detection name, and action taken.
Only consider restoring the item if the original location belongs to the verified HP package and the file’s digital signature is valid. Reinstalling the HP package is safer than restoring a quarantined file manually.

If the file is outside a plausible HP application or driver directory:
- Do not run it.
- Scan the file and the system with Windows Security.
- Remove the associated unknown application.
- Reinstall the printer software from HP if the printer is legitimate and still needed.
Fix 5: Match the driver architecture
A 32-bit HP component may be required by 32-bit printer software even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Conversely, copying an arbitrary 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application folder will not repair that application.

To check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System > About.
- Check System type.
Then reinstall the package intended for the exact printer and Windows architecture. Do not mix files from separate packages or copy a DLL from another computer.

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on the connection.
- Right-click the HP device and select Properties.
- Review the Driver tab.
- Select Update driver or Uninstall device only when you are ready to reinstall the correct HP package.
Device Manager may install a basic Windows driver, but it usually does not restore the complete HP utility suite that originally used hpzvuw72.dll.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows itself may have damaged system components, the Driver Store, or protected files. They are not a guaranteed way to restore a third-party HP DLL.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer or HP application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while hpzvuw72.dll is generally an HP printer-software component. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not prove the HP package is complete.
Repeatedly running these commands will not replace a missing HP driver package. Return to the exact-model reinstall procedure if the error remains.

regsvr32 hpzvuw72.dll
It may produce an “entry point not found” message, and even a successful registration would not install the printer driver, its dependencies, or its configuration. Reinstall the complete HP package instead.
Why standalone DLL downloads usually fail
Downloading hpzvuw72.dll from a random DLL website creates several risks:
- The file may contain malware.
- Its architecture may not match the calling program.
- Its version may not match the rest of the HP package.
- Required dependencies may still be missing.
- Windows may continue loading an orphaned or incompatible startup component.
- A manually copied file may bypass normal driver installation and servicing.

FAQ
Is hpzvuw72.dll part of Windows?
No. It may appear in the Windows Driver Store because Windows stages HP printer packages there, but the file belongs to HP printer software rather than being a general Windows system DLL.
Which printer installed it?
The exact model cannot be established from the filename alone. Historical package evidence connects it with older HP printer software, including a Photosmart C5500-series listing, but this is not a complete supported-model list.
Can I copy it from another computer?
That is not a safe normal repair. The other computer may have a different HP package, architecture, version, or dependency set. Reinstall the complete package for your printer.
