Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, record:
- The exact program that reports the error.
- Whether it fails at launch, when joining a game, or while loading a saved installation.
- Whether the message names
hrtz.dll,hrtzres.dll, or another file. - The folder containing the program’s executable.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- What changed immediately before the failure: removing Windows games, reinstalling Windows, restoring an old disk image, deleting Zone files, or antivirus quarantine.
Typical messages include:
- “The program can’t start because hrtz.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because hrtz.dll was not found.”
- “The file hrtz.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading hrtz.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load hrtz.dll.”

What hrtz.dll is
hrtz.dll is the historical Zone Game DLL – Hearts, a 32-bit library used by Microsoft’s old Zone.com and MSN Gaming Zone Internet Hearts software. It is associated with the legacy game component, not with Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, a printer driver, or a current Windows runtime.

Historical Windows XP inventories list hrtz.dll with companion files including hrtzres.dll, hrtzzm.exe, and hrtz.chm. That grouping matters: restoring only one DLL often leaves the game unable to start because the original component also depended on other files, configuration, and old Windows behavior.

The original file was a 32-bit legacy component. On a 64-bit system, that does not mean you should copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. The correct location was determined by the original installer and the program that loads it.
Fix 1: Identify the affected program and restore its complete installation
This is the fastest safe check when the error appears after launching a particular game.
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, note the path in Target and select Open File Location if available.
- Look for the program’s executable and nearby companion files.
- Do not download
hrtz.dllto fill the missing file. - Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for the affected Hearts, Zone, or legacy game entry.
- If Advanced options provides Repair, select it.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall the damaged program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete program from its original, legitimate installation media or preserved installer.
If the installer asks for a Windows installation disc or source, use media matching the installed edition and service-pack level where possible. Do not mix files from unrelated releases.
A successful repair should restore the game’s complete file set and allow the executable to launch without the hrtz.dll message. If the same message returns immediately, the installer may not support the current Windows version, or a dependency of the DLL may also be missing.
Check the filename carefully
hrtz.dll is not interchangeable with:
hrtzres.dllHearts.dll- A DLL belonging to another card game
- A file with a similar name in a temporary folder
If the dialog names hrtzres.dll, repair the complete game installation rather than renaming another file. Renaming DLLs can make diagnosis harder and can cause a different loader failure.
Fix 2: Reinstall the original Windows XP game component
If the software is being run on Windows XP or from an intact XP-era installation, restore it through Windows Components rather than copying a standalone file.

- Open Control Panel.
- Select Add or Remove Programs.
- Select Add/Remove Windows Components.
- Select Accessories and Utilities, then choose Details.
- Select Games, then choose Details again.
- Select the relevant Hearts or Zone game component.
- Select OK, then Next.
- Provide the original Windows installation CD or matching installation source if prompted.
- Restart the computer when setup completes.
Windows XP represented the related components through entries including hearts and zonegames. The exact check boxes can vary by edition and installed component set.

It can also place them where the original game expects them instead of leaving a manually copied DLL in the wrong directory.
If the component is not listed, the installation source may not contain it, the component database may be damaged, or the software may have been supplied separately from Windows. Use the original game installer or a preserved installation image instead.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may have removed a legacy DLL, particularly after restoring an old disk image or moving the game from another computer. Check the quarantine record before restoring anything.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries that mention
hrtz.dll, the game executable, or the game’s installation directory. - Expand an entry and inspect its path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if it came from a trusted original installation.
- Run a current full scan after the restore.
- Start the game again.
Do not restore a copy found in a temporary directory, a browser download folder, or an unknown user-writable location. If hrtz.dll appeared outside the expected legacy game directory, investigate the executable that loaded it and scan the system before allowing it.
If Defender detects the file again, stop restoring it repeatedly. That result can indicate that the file is modified, the parent program is unsafe, or the old software is incompatible with current protection rules.

Fix 4: Repair Windows component storage, then run SFC
Use DISM and System File Checker when Windows itself reports broader corruption, other protected files are missing, or Windows features fail to install. These commands are not a reliable source for an application-owned Zone DLL.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and try the original program.
SFC can repair protected Windows files. It normally will not recreate an old application DLL that belonged to Zone Hearts. If SFC reports that it found and repaired files but hrtz.dll remains missing, return to the complete game installation rather than searching for a replacement DLL.

If DISM or SFC reports that it could not complete the repair, record the exact result. Repeating the commands without resolving the component-store problem is unlikely to restore this particular legacy game file.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help if Internet Hearts worked recently and the failure began after a driver installation, software removal, update, or configuration change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be affected.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings without removing personal documents. It may not restore a complete game installation if the files were manually deleted, and it cannot recreate an obsolete online service.

If the error remains after a restore, use the original installer or Windows component source. Do not combine a restored executable with a DLL copied from an unrelated computer.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to a driver
A graphics or chipset driver is not the normal cause of a missing hrtz.dll message. Updating drivers will not replace the Zone Hearts library. It is relevant only when the game launches but also shows display corruption, crashes in graphics initialization, or produces device errors.
To check for a device problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General tab and Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only when a compatible driver is available from the computer or hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows after installation.
Do not remove a working driver merely because hrtz.dll is missing. The game component is still the primary repair target.

Do not use regsvr32 hrtz.dll
Do not run:
regsvr32 hrtz.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that support COM self-registration through an exported DllRegisterServer entry point. There is no evidence that hrtz.dll is a COM server or that it should be registered.
Running the command will commonly produce a message that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not repair a missing game installation, restore companion files, or make a 32-bit legacy program compatible with modern Windows.

- The file may be altered or malicious.
- The version may not match the executable.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- Companion files such as
hrtzres.dllmay still be absent. - The file may be placed in the wrong directory.
- The original game may require obsolete APIs, installers, or configuration.
- “The specified module could not be found” may refer to a dependency of
hrtz.dll, not the named DLL itself.
A 32-bit DLL does not become suitable for a 64-bit application by copying it into SysWOW64. Conversely, putting it into System32 does not repair a missing application installation. On 64-bit Windows, those directory names are counterintuitive, so avoid choosing either location manually.
The safe sources are the original Windows XP installation media, the original game installer, or a legitimate preserved installation that matches the program. Let that installer place the files.
What modern Windows can and cannot run
Windows 10 and Windows 11 may run some old 32-bit programs, but compatibility is not guaranteed. A valid copy of hrtz.dll can still fail when the calling program expects obsolete Windows components, old ActiveX behavior, unavailable registry entries, or dependencies that current Windows no longer provides.
The original Microsoft online Zone service is also obsolete. Restoring the DLL alone does not recreate that service. Unofficial revival projects exist, but they are not Microsoft-supported replacements and should not be treated as an official repair path.
If you only want a card game, use a supported modern Hearts game rather than rebuilding the discontinued Internet Hearts service. If you must preserve the old program, use the complete legacy installation in an isolated, backed-up environment and avoid exposing an obsolete operating system directly to untrusted networks.

If the error says “not designed to run on Windows”
Treat that message as a compatibility or loader failure, not proof that one particular DLL is defective. Possible causes include:
- A damaged file.
- A wrong-architecture file.
- An incompatible old executable.
- A missing dependency.
- A legacy component that current Windows does not support.
Confirm that the file came from the original installation, reinstall the complete game, and test the program in its intended legacy environment. Do not download several replacement copies and test them in system folders.
Final diagnostic checklist
If the error remains, record these details before seeking further help:
- Exact error text.
- Windows edition and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The affected executable and its full path.
- The path where
hrtz.dllis expected. - Whether
hrtzres.dlland other Zone files are present. - Whether the file was quarantined.
- The result of the original installer or Windows Components repair.
- The result of DISM and
sfc /scannow. - Any related entry in Event Viewer under Windows Logs → Application.
At that point, stop replacing DLLs. The remaining problem is likely an unsupported legacy application, a missing dependency, or a damaged installation rather than a single file that needs to be downloaded.
