“wfxdnt40.dll is missing,” “wfxdnt40.dll was not found,” and “wfxdnt40.dll could not be loaded” all point to a broken or leftover WinFax reference. wfxdnt40.dll is the legacy WinFax NT Printer Driver file, not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 runtime file.
The 60-second answer
wfxdnt40.dll was associated with WinFax PRO, the discontinued fax application that originated with Delrina and later became associated with Symantec. Its metadata uses Microsoft Windows NT printer-driver branding, but that does not mean current Windows installs the file as a protected system component.

The safest fix depends on whether WinFax is still needed:
- Still using WinFax: repair or reinstall the same WinFax release from its original, trustworthy installation media.
- No longer using WinFax: uninstall it and remove the obsolete startup, printer, or fax-driver reference.
- File quarantined: verify the original path and provenance before restoring anything.
- Error appeared after an upgrade: treat it as a legacy-driver compatibility problem, not as proof that Windows needs a random replacement DLL.
Do not start by copying wfxdnt40.dll into System32, installing Visual C++, running regsvr32, or downloading a loose DLL.

What is wfxdnt40.dll
The file is identified as WinFax NT Printer Driver and is associated with the historical Microsoft (R) Windows NT(TM) WinFax Printer Driver. In practical terms, it supported WinFax’s virtual printer or fax-printing workflow.
WinFax PRO is obsolete software. Its final major release was WinFax PRO 10, and development ended before Windows Vista. Microsoft’s current fax documentation describes the Windows Fax service and its printer infrastructure, not this old WinFax component.
The Microsoft branding in the file description is easy to misread. It describes the historical Windows NT driver context and legacy metadata. It does not establish that wfxdnt40.dll belongs in the current Windows system directories.
There is also no verified current Microsoft redistributable package that specifically installs this file. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET assembly, or ordinary Windows 11 inbox DLL.
Why the error appears
The error normally has one of these causes:
WinFax is damaged or incomplete
If WinFax, its virtual printer, or fax-printing function triggers the message, the original installation may be incomplete. A failed update, partial uninstall, disk problem, or moved installation directory can leave the driver unable to load.
A stale WinFax reference remains
WinFax may already be gone while Windows still has an old startup entry, printer queue, service, or driver reference. In that case, the missing file is not something Windows needs repaired. It is an obsolete instruction telling Windows to load a component that no longer exists.
Windows was upgraded
WinFax predates modern Windows driver-signing, security, printing, and compatibility requirements. An installation that worked on Windows XP may fail after an upgrade even if its files are intact.

Security software may remove or quarantine an old executable component. A quarantine event does not prove the file was malicious, but an old DLL restored from an untrusted location can be dangerous. Check its original path, signature, and source before restoring it.
A broader Windows problem exists
System corruption is possible, but it is not the leading explanation because wfxdnt40.dll is not established as a protected current Windows file. SFC and DISM can repair Windows components, but they may not restore a private WinFax file.
First, identify what is calling the file
Do this before replacing anything.
Check when the message appears
Note whether it appears when you:
- Start Windows
- Launch WinFax
- Print to a WinFax printer
- Open a document’s print dialog
- Send or receive a fax
- Start a service
- Log in after removing software
The timing often identifies the component.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Search for WinFax, Delrina, or Symantec.
- If present, select the three-dot menu and choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer offers.
On older interfaces:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for WinFax or related entries.
Do not uninstall before backing up important fax data. Historical installations may use folders such as C:WINFAX or C:Program FilesDelrinaWinFax, but the actual location varies by release.
Check startup items
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for WinFax, Delrina, Symantec, or an entry pointing to a missing WinFax directory.
- If WinFax is no longer needed, right-click the entry and select Disable.
This stops the startup error from recurring, but it does not remove the underlying program or printer driver.

Check printers
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for a WinFax printer or fax-related queue.
- Open its properties and record the driver or port information.
If the error occurs during printing, this is one of the most important checks. Do not delete the queue until you have confirmed whether WinFax is still required.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall WinFax
Use this route if you still need old fax archives, the WinFax application, or its virtual printer.
Try the original repair option
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find WinFax.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify or Repair, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Test WinFax and the WinFax printer.
If the repair completes and the error disappears when WinFax starts or prints, the private driver files were restored successfully.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteReinstall from the same legitimate media
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Back up WinFax data and address books.
- Note any custom fax printer or modem settings.
- Uninstall WinFax from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original WinFax installer as an administrator.
- Install the same release rather than mixing files from another release.
- Restart again.
- Test the application, printer, and fax workflow.
Do not combine wfxdnt40.dll from one WinFax release with executables or printer files from another. A DLL can exist but still fail because its version, dependencies, exports, or driver registration do not match.
A supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 installer for WinFax could not be verified. If the installer refuses to work, compatibility mode may help the application launch, but it cannot guarantee that the obsolete printer driver will work on a modern system.
Fix 2: Remove WinFax and its stale reference
Use this route if WinFax is no longer needed.
Uninstall the application
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for WinFax, Delrina, or Symantec.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
If the entry is missing, open Control Panel, select Programs and Features, and remove it there.
Remove the old printer queue
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the WinFax printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
If the printer cannot be removed, open Print Management where available, or use the manufacturer’s documented uninstall routine. Avoid deleting random files from the Windows driver store.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the error again
Restart Windows and test the action that previously produced the message. If the error is gone, it was probably caused by an orphaned WinFax reference.
If it remains, check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs → Application and Windows Logs → System.
- Look for an event at the exact time of the error.
- Record the application, service, driver path, or printer name mentioned.
Do not delete registry entries based only on a search for the filename. Back up the system first, and remove a registry reference only when you have identified the exact obsolete WinFax component it belongs to.
Fix 3: Reinstall the original printer component
Because this is a printer-driver file, a WinFax repair or reinstall is more appropriate than a generic DLL repair.
If WinFax remains installed:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the WinFax printer.
- Remove the queue if the WinFax installer provides a way to recreate it.
- Restart the Print Spooler only after documenting existing queues.
- Run the original WinFax setup program.
- Choose the printer or driver installation option.
- Restart Windows.
- Print a test document to the WinFax printer.
To restart the spooler:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Right-click Print Spooler.
- Select Restart.
Restarting the spooler clears active print jobs, so do not do this while another user needs the printer.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through multiple driver versions and identifying stale device drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the original WinFax package remains the definitive fix for this specific legacy component.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
If the message began after antivirus activity:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the event involving
wfxdnt40.dll. - Record the original file path and detection details.
- Confirm whether the file came from your original WinFax installation media.
Only restore the file when its provenance and original path are clear. If it came from a random DLL website, do not restore it. Remove the untrusted copy, scan the computer, and reinstall the complete application from trustworthy media instead.

A file with Microsoft wording in its description is not automatically safe. Old metadata can be copied, altered, or attached to an unrelated file.
Fix 5: Update or roll back a related driver
This step applies when the error started immediately after a printer-driver change or Windows upgrade.

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Software devices.
- Look for WinFax, fax, or an unknown device with a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider, date, and driver details.
- Use Roll Back Driver only if the problem began after a recent driver update.
- Otherwise choose Uninstall Device, restart Windows, and reinstall the original WinFax component.
Device Manager cannot create a compatible WinFax driver from nothing. If the device is an obsolete virtual fax printer, the correct source is the WinFax installer, not Windows Update and not a loose DLL.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when other Windows files or features are also malfunctioning.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows component corruption, not necessarily a missing private WinFax file. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not rule out a damaged WinFax installation.
If repeatedly hunting through system files and rerunning repairs is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing what it detects; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for a WinFax reinstall.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is reasonable if the error began immediately after removing WinFax, cleaning a driver, or installing an update.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the change.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace a proper WinFax migration or guarantee that an obsolete driver will work on current Windows. Use it only when the timing is clear and a suitable restore point exists.
What not to do
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
There is no reliable evidence that current Windows installs wfxdnt40.dll in either directory. Copying it there can create version conflicts, load the wrong architecture, or expose Windows to a modified file.
A 64-bit edition of Windows can run some old 32-bit applications through WoW64, but no authoritative source confirms a supported 64-bit build of this file. Do not assume that separate official x86 and x64 downloads exist.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and .NET do not have a verified connection to this WinFax printer-driver file. Installing them merely because the filename ends in .dll is unlikely to help.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair command
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver or application-support DLL may not be a COM server and may not support registration.
Do not run:
regsvr32 wfxdnt40.dll
unless the original WinFax installer specifically instructs you to do so. A “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found” message means the command does not apply, not that another copy of the file is needed.

Do not use random DLL download sites
A loose download may have the wrong version, architecture, exports, dependencies, or altered contents. It can also conceal malware and leave the broken WinFax installation untouched. The safe sources are the original WinFax installation media, a legitimate archived copy that you can verify, or a supported replacement fax application.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When to replace WinFax
If WinFax will not install or its printer driver will not work after a clean repair, the central problem is probably obsolescence rather than one missing DLL.
For occasional faxing, consider a current fax service or supported business application. For workflows that depend on the old WinFax interface or archives, isolate the legacy installation in an appropriate older Windows environment and protect it from unnecessary network exposure. Do not expect compatibility mode to make an obsolete fax printer driver fully supported.
FAQ
Is wfxdnt40.dll part of Windows 11 or Windows 10?
No. It is a legacy WinFax printer-driver file, not a normal current Windows inbox DLL.
Which WinFax versions used it?
The filename is associated with WinFax PRO and its historical Windows NT printer-driver components. The exact release that installed a particular copy cannot be established from the filename alone.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Restore it through the matching WinFax installation instead. Copying it into Windows directories can cause architecture and version problems.
Is the file malware?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Check its original path, digital signature, source, and antivirus event. Do not restore a copy from an untrusted DLL site.
Does regsvr32 fix it?
Usually not. regsvr32 only applies when the DLL supports the required registration entry point, and a printer-driver support file may not.
What if WinFax is no longer installed?
Remove the stale startup entry, printer queue, service, or application reference. Use the exact error timing and Event Viewer to identify what is still calling the file.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat if the problem started after upgrading from Windows XP?
That strongly suggests a legacy compatibility or driver problem. Repairing the old installation may help, but a supported fax application or isolated older environment is usually the more dependable long-term path.
Will SFC or DISM restore wfxdnt40.dll?
Not necessarily. They repair Windows components and may leave private WinFax files unchanged.
Why does the error appear while printing?
A WinFax virtual printer or its old driver reference is probably still registered. Reinstall the original WinFax printer component if you need it, or remove the obsolete queue if you do not.
What should I do if every fix fails?
Back up any fax data, remove the obsolete WinFax installation, and move the workflow to a supported fax service or application. A persistent error after removal usually means another startup or printer reference still points to the old software.
