A canon-connected Imprisoning War story and satisfying crowd combat make Age of Imprisonment a compelling Switch 2 exclusive, but linear missions temper the spectacle.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment turns the ancient war behind The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom into a crowd-fighting action campaign. Its canon-connected story, lively combat and spectacle make it an appealing Switch 2 exclusive for Zelda fans, but the straightforward, linear missions can limit its battlefield variety. Whether it is worth playing depends on how much you value that story and combat over the Warriors series’ repeated battlefield objectives.

What is Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment?

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is a Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive action game released November 6, 2025. Nintendo describes it as the complete story of Ganondorf’s invasion of ancient Hyrule and the Imprisoning War, events that Tears of the Kingdom reveals only in fragments. Nintendo’s product page lists a physical edition and labels the game “Only for the Nintendo Switch™ 2 system!” Nintendo product page; Nintendo’s September 19, 2025 announcement.

This is a Warriors-style action game, not a conventional Zelda adventure built around dungeon exploration. The central appeal is taking on large groups of enemies, coordinating with allies and using special abilities to turn a battlefield in your favor. Its story connection is meaningful for players curious about Hyrule’s past, while its moment-to-moment play is aimed at people who enjoy action against crowds.

How does the story serve Zelda fans?

The game expands the Imprisoning War and the ancient Hyrule setting introduced through memories in Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo presents the events as canonical story material, describing them as the “canonical events only glimpsed” in that game. That framing gives the campaign a clear reason to exist beyond revisiting familiar characters: it dramatizes the conflict that shaped the history players already know.

Nintendo Life praised the story’s detail and its handling of the familiar setting, while GamesRadar highlighted Zelda’s role in the action. Their responses suggest that the narrative context is among the stronger reasons to play, particularly for fans invested in the world and its history. The reviews do not establish that the story alone will satisfy players who dislike the Warriors combat format.

What is combat like?

The basic rhythm is to fight through enemy hordes, use character abilities and work with allies. Nintendo highlights Sync Strikes, coordinated attacks with allied characters, and Zonai devices that can change how encounters play out. TechRadar also singled out weapon types, Fuse attacks and elemental reactions as sources of combat variety. Together, these systems give the action more texture than simply repeating the same attack against a larger crowd.

Nintendo Life and GamesRadar both praised the combat, and GamesRadar also commended the game’s performance. The selected reviews therefore point to satisfying action and spectacle as key strengths, though that does not erase the limits of the mission design.

Where does the game fall short?

GamesRadar’s central criticism is that missions can feel linear and straightforward, with limited battlefield scope. That matters because crowd combat benefits from the sense that several fronts or objectives are in play; when the route and objectives feel constrained, the scale of the fighting may not translate into equally varied missions. GamesRadar also found some historical characters less compelling.

Nintendo Life noted that the map can become cluttered with quests, side missions and challenges. That is a different concern from GamesRadar’s criticism of mission structure: one review points to the amount of activity competing for attention, while the other questions how much the main battles vary. Players who enjoy a steady stream of optional tasks may welcome the extra markers; those who prefer a cleaner map or more open-ended battlefields may not.

How long is it?

TechRadar’s reviewer reported spending about 30 hours on the campaign and roughly 60–70% of the side activities. That is one reviewer’s playthrough, not a universal completion-time estimate: time will vary with pace and how much optional content a player takes on. It does, however, indicate that the review experience extended well beyond a short campaign rush. TechRadar’s November 4, 2025 review.

Is it worth playing?

The case for Age of Imprisonment is strongest if you want more of Tears of the Kingdom’s ancient history and enjoy the Warriors formula of spectacular crowd combat. The case is weaker if you need exploratory Zelda gameplay or highly varied, open battlefield layouts. The reviewed strengths—story context, combat creativity and spectacle—are real, but the criticism of linear missions is a meaningful qualification, not a minor footnote.
