Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is a Nintendo Switch 2 action game that turns the Imprisoning War—an event The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom presents largely through memories—into a full-scale battle story with Princess Zelda at its center. That makes it an especially clear fit for players who want more context for Tears of the Kingdom and enjoy Warriors-style combat against large enemy forces. It is an action-focused spin-off, not a mainline Zelda adventure.

What is Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment?
Developed as a story-driven action game for Nintendo Switch 2, Age of Imprisonment recounts the conflict known as the Imprisoning War, which is connected to Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo describes it as an untold story of events previously hinted at in that game, with Zelda placed at the heart of the conflict. The official UK listing gives a release date of 6 November 2025; availability and details can differ by regional storefront, so check the listing for your region. Nintendo UK’s game listing
The distinction in format matters: this is a large-scale combat spin-off, rather than an exploration-led mainline Zelda game. Its premise is most immediately appealing if you finished Tears of the Kingdom wanting to see more of the history behind its present-day Hyrule.

How does the story connect to Tears of the Kingdom?
Tears of the Kingdom reveals pieces of the Imprisoning War through Zelda’s experiences in the past. Age of Imprisonment makes that conflict the subject of its own narrative, giving players the opportunity to experience the war as a sequence of battles and story scenes instead of receiving it only as background. Nintendo’s description identifies Zelda as central, but that alone does not establish how much playable time she receives or how her role develops across every chapter.
That setup gives the game a specific narrative job: it can add context to a story fans already know without replacing the main game’s exploration, puzzles or discovery. Readers hoping for a new, open-ended Zelda quest should be aware that the focus here is conflict and action. To preserve the story’s surprises, the discussion above avoids late-game events.

What does combat involve?
Nintendo’s feature description centers on fighting enemy hordes with a cast of unique characters, using Zonai devices to affect battles, and facing Demon King Ganondorf. These are official feature claims, not proof of how varied or readable the combat feels in practice. The key questions for a player are whether character abilities create meaningfully different approaches, whether Zonai devices offer tactical choices beyond spectacle, and whether the battlefield remains legible when many enemies are present. Those qualities require hands-on play to judge.
The Warriors format typically emphasizes clearing groups of enemies and responding to shifting battlefield objectives rather than the measured one-on-one encounters associated with many mainline Zelda games. That broad structure will suit players who enjoy action at scale; it may be less appealing to someone primarily seeking exploration, puzzles or a slower adventure.
