Its original founders reacquired Hytale from Riot in November 2025, and Hytale entered Early Access on January 13, 2026. It launched as an unfinished game, with some major modes and features still absent.
What happened to Hytale?
Riot completed its acquisition of Hypixel Studios on April 16, 2020. At the time, the studio was developing Hytale as a block-based game combining a creative sandbox with roleplaying elements. On November 17, 2025, Hypixel’s original founders announced they had reacquired Hytale from Riot and were restarting development. The announcement said they had rehired more than 30 developers and intended to return to the game’s original vision. The founders’ reacquisition announcement

Is Hytale still cancelled?
No. The June 2025 shutdown was followed by the founders’ reacquisition and renewed development, and Hytale is now in Early Access. Calling it simply “cancelled” leaves out the game’s subsequent return.
Why did Riot stop developing Hytale?
Riot’s announcement confirms that development stopped and Hypixel Studios began winding down, but it does not give a detailed internal explanation. In the later reacquisition announcement, founder Simon Collins-Laflamme said Riot did not consider it sensible to continue developing the game in its existing form, while wanting players eventually to experience a revised version. That statement does not establish a specific budget, staffing, management, or technical cause, so claims about those factors should be treated as speculation. Collins-Laflamme’s statement
