The Khazalite Holds are an exciting new duardin army, but their arrival also marks a significant change for Age of Sigmar: Fyreslayers are being folded into the new battletome. Existing Fyreslayer collections remain usable, including as a complete army, yet several units are entering Warhammer Legends after a 12-month competitive transition. That makes this release both a compelling new beginning and a genuine test of how Games Workshop will manage older factions.
What the Khazalite Holds are
Games Workshop unveiled the Khazalite Holds on 18 September 2026. They are a new duardin faction built around mountain strongholds, ancestral memory and heavily armoured warriors. The Khazalite Holds Army Set includes miniatures and a battletome, is led by Hjulda Drakkblud and forms a complete Spearhead army in one box. Games Workshop describes it as the starting point for a wider range of Khazalite kits.

The army’s visual identity is deliberately traditional: tough armour, hammers, axes and a massive cannon. Games Workshop says the cannon is “big enough to blow a hole through a Mega-Gargant.” The Clanshields kit contains 10 miniatures with interchangeable shields and heads, hammer-or-axe weapon choices and command options. The unit has a 3+ save and gains +1 to wound while it has grudge marks.
How the army plays
Grudge marks turn setbacks into resources
The defining battle trait, “Thorgrim’s Beard! There are Grudges to be Settled!”, awards grudge marks in several situations:

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- A Khazalite unit is destroyed.
- A Kromdron unit contests an objective with an enemy.
- A Grimmdron unit charges and survives without destroying a unit.
- The army’s general suffers damage.
“Reclaim the Karaks” adds a mark when an enemy takes an objective in your territory. Choosing to Retreat removes one. Taken together, these rules point to an army that absorbs pressure, records losses and converts difficult moments into stronger attacks. That is an interpretation of the published rules rather than a claim about tournament performance.
Ancestral Vows add a second layer
Ancestor worship is represented by five once-per-battle Ancestral Vows. Games Workshop cites effects including healing and damage through “We Honour Valaya!” The vows give the army important timing decisions: spend a once-per-battle effect early to stabilize a unit, or preserve it for a decisive turn.
What changes for Fyreslayer players
The most important practical change is that Fyreslayers become part of the Khazalite Holds battletome. Games Workshop says existing Fyreslayer miniatures can be used as a full Fyreslayer army or fielded alongside new Kromdron units. Your collection therefore does not become unusable simply because a new faction has launched.

Units moving to Warhammer Legends
The following Fyreslayer units are listed as moving to Warhammer Legends:
| Units moving to Legends | Transition rule |
|---|---|
| Vulkite Berzerkers; Auric Runemaster; Battlesmith; Doomseeker; Grimwrath Berzerker; Magmic Battleforge; Magmic Invocations | Games Workshop says they remain usable in competitive events for 12 months after the new battletome releases, then move to Legends. |
The 12-month period is measured from the new book’s release, not from the 18 September 2026 unveiling. Games Workshop has not provided a release date in the announcement material, so players should check the final battletome and event-pack timing before planning a competitive transition.
Fyreslayer units that remain in the roster
The retained Fyreslayer roster includes:
- Magmadroth-mounted heroes
- Runefathers and Runesons
- Runesmiters
- Auric Flamekeepers
- Grimhold Exiles
- Vulkyn Flameseekers
- Auric Hearthguard
- Hearthguard Berzerkers
- The new Ormyr and Ashtongue
This is consolidation, not a published instruction to discard older models. The important trade-off is that one book now has to carry both the established Fyreslayer identity and the new Khazalite themes.

A wider duardin ecosystem
The battletome’s three Armies of Renown show that the release is designed to connect collections rather than keep every duardin range isolated.
| Army of Renown | Focus |
|---|---|
| Valankrom’s War Throng | The new centerpiece and Gholems |
| Fyrd of Fyrepeak | A Fyreslayer path built around vengeance and grudges |
| Throngankor Alliance | Khazalite Holds and Kharadron Overlords, including transport aboard Kharadron skyvessels |
These are official rules for combining forces. They establish that a Fyreslayer collection can have a role in the new structure and that Kharadron models can interact with Khazalite armies. The previews do not establish whether any of these combinations are competitive, so claims about a winning army or a new tournament tier would be premature.
The setting behind the army
Khazalite holds, also called karaks, are mountain settlements carved into rock. Games Workshop says many have been ruined by centuries of conflict and infiltration by malign forces. Their upper halls contain garrisons and communal areas; deeper levels hold armouries, forges, farms and halls of remembrance.

The culture is as important as the fortifications. Khazalites believe they can hear the vibrational wisdom of stone, and they regard forgetting as the worst fate for a duardin. That idea explains why grudge marks, ancestor vows and halls of remembrance all belong to the same faction: battle is treated as something recorded and remembered, not merely won or lost.

One consolidation is now documented: Fyreslayers are being incorporated into the Khazalite Holds battletome, with a defined Legends transition and new rules for mixed duardin armies. It is reasonable to infer that Games Workshop is willing to refresh older ranges through larger umbrella factions that support multiple themes and collections.

That inference is not a confirmed roadmap. A September 2025 Games Workshop statement said, “The future of the game is bright – and there’s more to come for every existing faction, plus one or two bigger developments on the way.” The statement supports continued investment across Age of Sigmar, but it does not promise that every faction will retain an unchanged range or a permanently separate battletome.

The release therefore raises four meaningful questions for the game’s future:
- Range continuity: how much of an older collection remains supported in the main rules?
- Army-building flexibility: can players combine related factions without losing their identities?
- Release scale: does a larger umbrella faction receive new kits faster than a small standalone range?
- Identity: can distinct cultures survive inside one battletome?
The Khazalite Holds answer the first two questions partially: most Fyreslayer units remain, and the rules explicitly support full Fyreslayer or mixed armies. The long-term answers for other factions are not established.
Is the Khazalite Holds Army Set a good starting point?
For someone starting a duardin collection, it is the clearest entry point currently described by Games Workshop. The box supplies a complete Spearhead force, the battletome and the faction’s new central mechanics. It also provides a path into later Khazalite kits rather than requiring a player to assemble a force from unrelated older releases.
For an existing Fyreslayer player, the decision is different. The Army Set adds access to the new battletome, Kromdron units and the mixed-faction options, but it is not required to keep using the retained Fyreslayer roster. Players whose collections depend heavily on the units moving to Legends should also account for the 12-month competitive window and the event rules that apply after it.
No official sales forecast, player-count estimate or tournament result has been published for the Khazalite Holds in the available launch material. The Army Set can therefore be judged as a rules and collection starting point, not as a proven competitive or commercial success.
