I Gave a Local LLM My Steam Library. Does It Recommend Games Better Than Steam?

A local language model can turn your Steam backlog into a conversational recommendation tool: tell it what mood you’re in, what you’ve finished, or what you want to avoid, and ask it to suggest games you already own. That can feel more useful than browsing Steam when you have a specific question—but “better” depends on the yardstick, and there is no independent head-to-head evidence establishing that local LLM recommendations are generally more accurate than Steam’s.

What “giving it my whole library” actually means

A recommendation model can only use the information it receives. Supplying a list of game names is different from giving it access to local Steam files, playtime, tags, completion status, or store descriptions. Those distinctions affect both the quality of its suggestions and what data has to leave your computer.

One documented workflow scans a local Steam installation, filters out non-game software, resolves Steam AppIDs into game names, then passes the library to a locally run model. Its example asks for suggestions based on mood. That is evidence that the approach is feasible, not proof of any particular author’s setup or results. Project documentation

Other projects use different inputs. Gamekeeper describes syncing through the Steam Web API and requires a Steam API key plus a public game-details profile. SuggestMe describes local storage while using internet access to sync a library and retrieve metadata. These are not the same privacy or setup model as reading local files and running inference locally. Gamekeeper project documentation SuggestMe project documentation

Why a conversational recommendation can feel better

Steam’s recommendations and a chat prompt answer different questions. A discovery feed can surface games based on account activity and platform signals; a language model can respond to a personal constraint stated in plain language. For example, “I want something short and relaxing that I already own, but not a roguelike” gives the model a clear request to apply—if it has reliable information about ownership and genres.

Playtime, genre tags, completion status, and explicit exclusions can make the answer more targeted. But a model cannot infer those details reliably from a bare list of titles. If it lacks metadata, it may confidently misclassify a game, recommend something you do not own, or invent a reason a title fits. Check the suggestions against your library and store pages rather than treating fluent explanations as proof.

What “better than Steam” should mean

The claim is most useful when tied to a specific task. A local LLM may be more convenient for translating a mood or a list of constraints into picks from a backlog. That does not establish that it is better at predicting what you will enjoy overall, finding new games, or ranking every game in Steam’s catalog.

  • Prompt relevance: Does it honor the mood, length, genre, or other constraints you named?
  • Ownership accuracy: Are the picks actually in your library?
  • Backlog discovery: Does it surface titles you had forgotten or overlooked?
  • Variety: Does it avoid returning the same familiar genres or franchises?
  • Explanation: Can you see why a pick matches, and is that explanation grounded in real metadata?
  • Trade-offs: Is the setup, hardware, network access, and privacy model acceptable to you?

A 2023 research abstract describes a Steam recommendation project based on user-item interactions that produces a top-five list. It provides academic context for recommendation systems, but it does not compare local LLMs with Steam’s recommendations or validate this workflow. No independent comparative accuracy results are established by the available evidence. 2023 research abstract

Local model does not automatically mean fully offline

Separate the recommendation process into two stages: getting information into the tool and generating a response from that information. A model can run locally while the library sync or metadata lookup uses the internet. If keeping data on your device matters, inspect each tool’s ingestion, sync, and inference paths rather than relying on the label “local.”

Gamekeeper states, “All data stays on your machine. No cloud services, no telemetry”. That is the project’s own privacy claim, not an independent audit. By contrast, its README says a Steam Web API key and a public game-details profile are needed; SuggestMe describes internet access for library synchronization and metadata retrieval despite local storage. Confirm current requirements and privacy documentation for the specific software before connecting an account. Gamekeeper project documentation SuggestMe project documentation

Direct chat versus recommendation tools

You do not have to use an LLM as the sole recommendation engine. Gamekeeper describes an offline Taste Engine alongside optional local LLM chat, while SuggestMe offers configurable recommendation modes and filters. A taste-based engine may be a better fit when you want a repeatable ranking; chat is useful when you want to state an unusual constraint or ask for an explanation. Neither approach is automatically more accurate: the fit depends on the inputs, filters, and outcome you value. Gamekeeper project documentation SuggestMe project documentation

Hardware and setup costs to consider

Running a model locally can require more memory than a lightweight library browser or recommendation tool. Gamekeeper’s README publishes these optional model tiers and hardware estimates; they are project configuration guidance, not universal requirements or independent benchmarks.

Optional model tier listed by Gamekeeper Project-listed model size Project-listed hardware estimate
Qwen3.5 4B 2.7 GB 4 GB VRAM, or CPU with 12 GB RAM
Qwen3 8B 5 GB 8 GB VRAM
Qwen2.5 14B 15.7 GB 20+ GB VRAM

These figures describe the configurations that project documents, not a guarantee that a model will run well on every system with those specifications. A larger model or different runtime may have different needs. Gamekeeper also says its Discover feed covers approximately 60,000 Steam games and reports testing on a 571-game library; those are project claims, not independently audited measures of coverage or recommendation quality. How to get more useful picks

  1. Choose the right library input. Decide whether the tool should use local Steam files, an API-based sync, or a title list. Check whether it imports playtime, tags, completion status, and metadata, not just ownership.
  2. Ask for games you own. State this explicitly, especially if the tool also searches broader catalog data.
  3. Give constraints the data can support. Add a mood, genre, session length, or exclusions. If you want it to account for games you have finished or played heavily, make sure that information is actually available.
  4. Request a short rationale and a small shortlist. Ask why each game matches and what information supports the fit. Treat unsupported details as a reason to verify, not as a trustworthy feature.
  5. Check the picks and refine. Confirm ownership and game details, then tell the model what was wrong or what you liked. A useful result is one that narrows your choice, not merely one that sounds persuasive.

So, is it better than Steam?

It can be better for a narrow job: turning a prompt such as “something cozy from my backlog” into a few personalized options, particularly when the model has useful library metadata and obeys your constraints. That is a different advantage from proving superior recommendations in general. Steam’s system and a local LLM optimize for different experiences, and no independent head-to-head accuracy result establishes a universal winner.
