Planet Zoo 2 Performance Settings: How to Reduce Lag in Large Zoos on PC

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Planet Zoo 2 slows down in a large zoo, start with the checks Frontier recommends: lower the game’s graphics quality, test with background apps and overlays closed, and briefly lower Windows display resolution as a diagnostic. Change one thing at a time and compare the same view or activity before and after. Frontier has not published a large-zoo benchmark or a setting-by-setting ranking, so there is no verified universal “best settings” preset or guaranteed FPS gain.

This guide covers the PC version only. Frontier’s support steps and the requirements below are PC-specific; they should not be assumed to apply to console editions.

Start by identifying what “lag” looks like

Before changing settings, note what happens and when: does the game look consistently choppy, pause intermittently, or slow down only in a particular part of the zoo? These observations help you compare changes, but they do not by themselves establish whether the cause is the graphics card, processor, memory, storage, heat, or another program. Frontier does not publish a diagnostic that maps particular large-zoo symptoms to a specific component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use one repeatable situation as your baseline. For example, revisit the same area of the zoo and perform the same camera movement or activity after each change. If you alter several settings at once, you will not know which one affected the result. Record the change and whether it helped, made no noticeable difference, or made things worse; restore it before testing a different variable if needed.

Make the comparison useful

For a fair before-and-after check, first settle on a representative view or activity where you have noticed the slowdown. Use the same area and camera movement each time, and avoid changing graphics, resolution, or running apps between the baseline and the test. You do not need to produce a formal benchmark: the goal is simply to find out whether a specific change makes a noticeable difference on your computer.

Keep brief notes such as “graphics quality lowered: less choppy in the same view” or “Discord closed: no noticeable change.” If the result is unclear, repeat the same comparison rather than immediately stacking another tweak on top. Restoring a temporary change before the next test makes it easier to tell what actually mattered. This is a practical testing method, not a performance result reported by Frontier.

Check your PC against the current official requirements

The Steam listing gives the following PC requirements. These are vendor-listed hardware tiers, not benchmark results and not a promise of a particular frame rate in a large zoo. The listing was checked on October 13, 2026, and may change; consult the current Steam requirements before making a purchase or hardware decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Requirement Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10 or 11 Windows 11
CPU Intel i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Intel i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
Memory 16 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Graphics card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 (6 GB), AMD Radeon RX 5600XT (6 GB), or Intel Arc A750 (8 GB) NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (8 GB), AMD Radeon RX 6700XT (12 GB), or Intel Arc A770 (16 GB)
DirectX Version 12 Version 12
Available storage 40 GB; SSD recommended 40 GB; SSD required

Compare your actual PC with the listed CPU and GPU models, GPU memory, RAM, operating system, and storage type. The requirement table does not say how a particular machine will perform in a particular zoo, and meeting the recommended tier cannot guarantee smooth performance in every situation.

How to compare your PC with the table

Check the model names, not just broad labels such as “gaming PC” or “RTX graphics.” Compare the CPU and graphics card separately against the listed alternatives, and note the graphics card’s VRAM figure where available. The requirement table gives separate models and memory capacities for the listed GPUs; it does not establish that every card with a similar name will perform identically.

Also verify the less visible requirements. The listing specifies 16 GB of RAM at both tiers, Windows 10 or 11 at minimum and Windows 11 as recommended, DirectX 12, and 40 GB of available storage. An “almost recommended” machine may differ in more than one category, so note each difference rather than assuming a single part explains a slowdown. These comparisons establish how the PC lines up with the published tiers; they are not a component-by-component performance diagnosis.

If you are considering buying a part, use the live Steam listing as the baseline and confirm that the exact model and your computer meet its requirements. The listed minimum and recommended tiers are not a shopping recommendation for a particular zoo size, and the official sources do not provide a guaranteed frame rate for either tier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the SSD note does—and does not—mean

Steam recommends an SSD for the minimum tier and requires one for the recommended tier. If your installation is on a hard drive, that requirement is relevant when checking whether your PC meets the listing. It is not evidence that changing to an SSD will fix frame-rate or simulation slowdowns, and the listing provides no measured performance improvement for an SSD upgrade.

In other words, treat storage type as a requirement check, not as a proven lag cure. If your PC does not have an SSD and you are considering one to meet the recommended tier, confirm the drive’s capacity, interface, form factor, and compatibility with your system before choosing a product. The official requirement calls for 40 GB of available storage; it does not specify a particular SSD model or establish that a 1TB drive is needed.

Lower the in-game graphics quality first

Frontier’s first graphics-related recommendation for poor performance is to lower the game’s graphics quality in the in-game menu. Try that change, return to your baseline situation, and see whether the slowdown changes. If it does, you have evidence that the graphics-quality adjustment helps on your PC in that situation; it does not establish which individual graphics option is responsible.

Frontier does not identify a particular setting—such as shadows, anti-aliasing, or another option—as the most effective one, and it does not promise a specific FPS increase. If the game offers individual graphics controls, adjust only one at a time and compare. Keep the change only if it improves the situation enough to justify any visual difference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters when looking for “the best settings” for a large zoo. There is no verified setting-by-setting ranking in Frontier’s published PC guidance, so a list claiming that one named option is always the biggest lag fix would go beyond what the source establishes. Start with the supported broad adjustment—lower graphics quality—then use any available individual controls as personal tests, not as a guaranteed recipe.

If lowering graphics quality does not change the same in-game situation, restore the setting before moving on. A lack of noticeable difference does not identify a different culprit; it simply means that this particular test did not give you a clear improvement. Continue through the diagnostic checks without assuming that the most visually obvious setting must be responsible.

Run Frontier’s diagnostic checks

Frontier’s PC troubleshooting guidance recommends several tests in addition to lowering graphics quality. Treat these as ways to isolate possible contributors, not fixes that are guaranteed to work for every player.

  1. Check the official minimum requirements. Compare your PC’s components and storage with the Steam table above. If it falls below a listed minimum, that is a concrete difference to investigate; it does not by itself identify the cause of a particular slowdown.
  2. Lower graphics quality in the game. Use the in-game menu, then compare the same zoo view or activity with your baseline. Keep the test controlled by avoiding other changes at the same time.
  3. Temporarily lower Windows display resolution. Frontier suggests lowering the resolution and then restoring it as a way to refresh the selected display settings. This is a diagnostic test, not a recommendation to permanently use a lower resolution. Make a note of your original resolution so you can put it back afterward.
  4. Close background applications and test again. Save or stop any work that should not be interrupted, close background programs, then repeat the same in-game comparison. Frontier calls particular attention to overlays and recording tools because they can use resources or conflict with the game.
  5. Check for overheating if there are signs of it. Frontier advises having a machine that may be overheating checked by a qualified technician. Its guidance does not prescribe a specific cooler or DIY repair.

Which background apps should you test?

Frontier gives these examples of applications to test with closed: NVIDIA GeForce Experience, OBS, FRAPS, Xsplit, Xbox Game Bar, Overwolf, Discord, Mumble, MSI Afterburner, Xbox Game DVR, and NVIDIA Shadowplay. They are examples, not a claim that every application on the list causes trouble or that one is responsible on your PC.

Close the ones you actually use, then retest. If closing an app changes the result, reopen it and repeat the comparison if practical. A repeatable difference is more useful than assuming that an application is the cause simply because it appears on a troubleshooting list.

  • Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.

It is not necessary to remove an app from your PC to run this check: the supported test is to close background applications and compare performance. In particular, distinguish an app being installed from an overlay or recording feature being active. The support guidance names these programs as examples to test, but does not say that every listed app must be uninstalled or that any one of them is always incompatible.

Use the Windows resolution check carefully

Frontier’s display-resolution suggestion is temporary: lower Windows display resolution, test, and restore the original setting afterward. Write down or otherwise note your starting resolution first, so you can return to it without guessing. Compare the same game situation before and during the test, and do not confuse a temporary diagnostic with advice to play permanently at a lower desktop resolution.

If the test changes what you observe, that is a clue worth recording, not a guarantee that the resolution itself is the root cause. If it has no noticeable effect, restore the original resolution and proceed to another supported check. Frontier does not state that this test will increase FPS by a fixed amount or should be repeated as a routine setting.

Choose the next step from the result

What you observe What to do next
Lowering graphics quality changes the slowdown. Keep the adjustment if the visual trade-off is acceptable. If you want to refine it, test available individual graphics options one at a time; Frontier does not rank them.
Closing a background app changes the result. Repeat the comparison with that app closed and reopened to see whether the difference is consistent. Check its overlay or recording features as possible variables rather than assuming the entire app always causes a problem.
Temporarily lowering Windows resolution changes the result. Restore your original resolution after the test. Treat the change as a diagnostic clue, not a reason to leave Windows at a resolution you do not want.
None of these tests makes a noticeable difference. Restore temporary changes, confirm that the PC meets the live requirements, and note the conditions under which the issue occurs. The cited official guidance does not provide a large-zoo benchmark or a component-specific diagnosis for this result.
You suspect overheating. Arrange an inspection by a qualified technician, as Frontier recommends, rather than treating a particular cooling purchase or repair as an official fix.

A controlled troubleshooting order

A sensible sequence is to record the baseline, compare your system to the listed minimum, lower in-game graphics quality, test the temporary Windows resolution change, and then test with background apps closed. Keep each step separate so that the result remains interpretable. If the machine may be overheating, follow Frontier’s advice to have it inspected by a qualified technician rather than guessing at a repair.

After each test, decide whether the result was clear enough to keep investigating that variable. A single change that seems to help once is not the same as a repeatable result; when practical, compare again under the same conditions. If nothing changes, record that too. A negative test is useful in narrowing what you have personally observed, but it should not be stretched into a diagnosis Frontier has not published.

Why a powerful PC can still slow down

A PC that sounds powerful or meets a recommended component tier is not guaranteed to maintain a particular frame rate in every zoo. The official requirements list hardware tiers, but Frontier’s support article does not publish large-zoo performance measurements, identify a CPU-versus-GPU bottleneck, or explain a specific simulation limit. Without those data, it would be misleading to promise that one upgrade or named graphics option will solve every case.

Use the checks above to establish whether a graphics-quality change, a background application, or the temporary display-resolution test affects your own situation. If none does, the evidence available here does not support a more specific diagnosis. Avoid buying hardware based only on an assumption that the game is limited by one component; first compare your system to the live requirements and, where overheating is plausible, seek qualified technical advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The minimum and recommended rows are also not comparative test results: they list example CPU and GPU tiers, the same 16 GB RAM figure at both levels, different operating-system requirements, and different SSD status. They do not say that every system just above minimum will behave alike, or that every system meeting recommended will feel smooth in a large or complex zoo. Use the table to check eligibility against the stated tiers, not to infer a precise performance outcome.

What this guidance can—and cannot—tell you

Frontier provides a practical starting sequence: reduce in-game graphics quality, refresh display settings by temporarily lowering and restoring Windows resolution, test with background apps closed, and have suspected overheating checked by a qualified technician. It does not name the most demanding graphics options, publish frame-rate targets, quantify the effect of each step, or report results for large zoos. Accordingly, treat every adjustment as a controlled test on your PC rather than a universal performance prescription.

The storefront requirements can help answer whether your computer matches the listed baseline, but they do not explain what causes every slowdown. The support article can tell you which broad troubleshooting checks Frontier suggests, but it does not rank individual settings or establish a CPU-versus-GPU explanation. Keep those boundaries in mind when weighing advice to buy a specific part, install a third-party cleanup utility, or use a universal “lag fix”: none of those claims is established by the official guidance summarized here.

Recheck the live Steam listing if you are making a hardware decision, since the requirements may change. Also revisit Frontier’s support guidance after a game patch or new technical update. As of the Steam listing checked October 13, 2026, the published requirements are the tiers in the table above; they should not be treated as a permanent benchmark or frame-rate guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I lower first to reduce Planet Zoo 2 lag on PC?

Frontier’s first graphics-related recommendation is to lower graphics quality in the game’s menu. Compare the same zoo view or activity before and after. Frontier does not rank individual settings such as shadows or anti-aliasing, so treat any further single-setting changes as tests rather than a verified best-settings list.

Why does Planet Zoo 2 lag even though my PC is powerful?

The official requirements list hardware tiers, not large-zoo benchmarks or guaranteed frame rates. Frontier’s PC support article does not diagnose a CPU-versus-GPU bottleneck or identify a specific simulation limit. Check the listed CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, OS, and SSD status, then test graphics quality and background apps one at a time.

Can overlays or recording apps cause Planet Zoo 2 performance problems?

Frontier recommends testing with background applications closed, especially overlays and recording tools that can use resources or conflict with the game. Its examples include OBS, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner, and NVIDIA Shadowplay, among others. They are examples to test, not proof that every listed app causes trouble.

Will installing the game on an SSD fix lag?

Steam lists an SSD as recommended for minimum specifications and required for recommended specifications, with 40 GB of available storage. That makes SSD status relevant to checking your PC against the requirements, but the listing does not report an FPS gain or establish that an SSD cures frame-rate or simulation slowdowns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I think my PC is overheating?

Frontier advises having a machine that may be overheating checked by a qualified technician. Its guidance does not prescribe a particular cooler or DIY repair, so do not treat a specific hardware purchase as an official fix.

Do these Planet Zoo 2 lag steps apply to consoles?

No console-specific performance guidance is covered here. Frontier’s cited troubleshooting article and the Steam system requirements are PC-specific, so do not assume the same settings or checks apply to console editions.

The Bottom Line

For Planet Zoo 2 lag on PC, check the current Steam requirements, lower in-game graphics quality, and test Windows resolution and background apps one at a time. Restore temporary changes, use a qualified technician if overheating is suspected, and do not expect a guaranteed FPS gain: Frontier has not published large-zoo benchmarks or a ranked list of settings.
