I.Q.: Intelligent Qube is a PlayStation puzzle game about marking a grid to destroy rolling cubes before they crush you or sweep you off the board. Its rules are simple to learn, but efficient clearing—and deciding which cubes to target—makes each stage a spatial puzzle under pressure.
How I.Q.: Intelligent Qube works
You control a small character on a square playfield called the Grid. Cubes roll toward you in lines. Mark a square on the Grid, and a cube is destroyed when it rolls over that mark. You must stay clear of the cubes and avoid falling off the Grid while choosing where and when to mark. The official PlayStation manual explains the Grid and distinguishes playable cubes from forbidden ones.

Clearing cubes is not enough: IQ points are awarded according to how efficiently you eliminate each set. As stages progress, more cubes arrive, their speed increases, and the puzzles become more complex. A mark that destroys several cubes can be more valuable than one that handles only a single cube, but reaching the right position safely is part of the challenge.
Cube types and the Advantage Zone
The game’s three cube types—Normal, Advantage, and Forbidden—create different strategic choices. The manual describes the Advantage Zone as covering the eight cubes adjacent to the glowing green square. The creator, Masahiko Sato, has also described these types as a way to let players develop different strategies.

Forbidden cubes are the critical exception to the basic clearing rule: they are not ordinary targets to mark and destroy. You have to account for them as hazards while planning a route and deciding which safe cubes to clear. The result is a puzzle about reading the whole formation, not just reacting to the nearest cube.
Original controls
The original manual gives these default controls. It also says you can change control settings in the Options Menu.

Sony’s US PlayStation Store listing identifies a PS4 and PS5 release as a conversion of the original PlayStation game. When checked on October 8, 2026, the US listing showed a March 7, 2025 release date, a displayed price of $9.99, and PlayStation Plus Premium access. Store availability, subscription access, and price can change and vary by region, so check the listing for your account’s region before relying on those details.

The same listing showed English voice on PS4 and multiple voice languages on PS5; English screen language on PS4 and additional listed screen languages on PS5. Language support is platform- and listing-specific, so confirm the details on the edition you intend to use. The listing also displayed a 4.2/5 average from 710 ratings at the time checked. That is a changing PlayStation Store user-rating snapshot, not an independent critic score or study.
Digital conversion or original disc?

If you want a current digital route, look for the PS4 and PS5 version on the PlayStation Store and verify your regional listing. If you want the original release as a physical game or collectible, search for an original PlayStation disc or PS1 copy of Intelligent Qube; that is distinct from buying the modern Store conversion.

Why the game looks and feels unusual
In a PlayStation Blog Japan interview published November 30, 2018, creator Masahiko Sato said the visual idea began on April 9, 1995: a dark space, huge objects rolling toward a person on a stage. The stark image became a game in which the player is small against an approaching formation of cubes.

Sato also described trying automated puzzle generation, then deciding that the results were not interesting enough and making many of the problems by hand. That design choice helps explain the game’s emphasis on authored patterns and deliberate decisions rather than simply clearing whatever happens to arrive. The interview’s Japanese line, 「人間が感じる面白さは、なかなか記号化できません。」, can be translated as “The fun people feel is difficult to reduce to symbols.” That is a translation, not an English quotation from Sato.
