Michelle Ehrhardt went into a February 2026 preview expecting to make fun of Nintendo’s Virtual Boy accessory. Instead, she came away impressed by how much stereoscopic 3D changed the games. In her hands-on account for Lifehacker, syndicated by Yahoo Tech, depth made the wireframe world of Red Alarm easier to read than it looked in flat footage. That is a persuasive reason to be curious about the accessory—but not proof that its unusual viewing setup will suit every player.
What the Virtual Boy effect changed for Ehrhardt
Ehrhardt says she had never played the original Virtual Boy hardware before trying the accessory with a Nintendo Switch 2 at the preview. The standout for her was the sense of depth: characters seemed to emerge from the background, and the effect changed how she interpreted what was on screen.

Her clearest example was Red Alarm. Its wireframe graphics were difficult for her to parse in flat video, but in stereoscopic 3D she could distinguish the ship and its environment more readily. That is a report of one player’s experience, not a guarantee that the depth will make every game easier for everyone.
She also tried Innsmouth no Yakata, which the article describes as a previously Japanese-only release. It names Virtual Boy Wario Land as another catalog example and says the library was also expected to include unreleased games such as Zero Racers. Those are details reported at the February 2026 preview; the article does not establish which titles are available now.

Two accessory designs, two different setups
The preview article describes a plastic replica with a stand and a less expensive cardboard viewer that is held to the face. Their practical differences matter as much as the styling.

Fit, color, and comfort are real parts of the experience
The plastic model depends on your setup
Because its stand is fixed-height, the plastic model’s fit depends on the height of the surface beneath it and the player’s seated position. Ehrhardt’s suggested workaround was to move it to another surface or raise it with books. The article raises a practical accessibility concern about having to find a workable viewing position, but it is not a full accessibility assessment.
The cardboard model trades a stand for holding the viewer
The cardboard version avoids needing a table at the right height, but the player has to keep it at their face while playing. That may be convenient for portability and awkward during a longer session. The preview account does not establish that either model is comfortable for all players.

The red display bothered the author
Ehrhardt says the red display bothered her after a few minutes. At publication, she reported that Nintendo planned other color options—including yellow, green, and black-and-white—for later in 2026, and that owners of the plastic model would have to remove its physical red filter to use alternate colors. That was a forward-looking statement in the February article; it does not confirm whether those options have since shipped or how they work in practice.
What the preview said about playing on Switch
Ehrhardt reported that Nintendo told her the console had to be undocked and placed in the accessory to start Virtual Boy games, and that TV-mode play was not supported at the preview. Treat this as a description of what she was told at that event, not a verified statement of the current system requirement.

The original Virtual Boy launched in 1995. Ehrhardt’s article reports that it had 14 games in North America and describes its output as 384 × 224 resolution per eye at a maximum of 50 frames per second. Those figures are attributed here to her 2026 article, which does not identify the underlying historical documentation.

The appeal Ehrhardt describes is not modern graphical fidelity. It is the way stereoscopic depth can give simple images a spatial quality that flat footage does not convey. Her reaction suggests why the Virtual Boy remains an interesting piece of gaming history, even though its limited historical library and distinctive viewing arrangement may make it a niche attraction rather than an obvious purchase for every Switch owner.
Is it worth considering?
If the draw is experiencing Virtual Boy games in stereoscopic 3D, Ehrhardt’s preview gives a concrete reason to be interested: for her, the effect made the presentation more legible and more compelling. If you are sensitive to the red display, need flexible positioning, or dislike holding a viewer to your face, the physical design deserves equal weight in the decision. Her account is a preview impression, not a long-term review or a complete comparison with original hardware.
