ialmgicd.dll is a legacy Intel OpenGL driver file, so the safest fix is to restore the correct Intel graphics package rather than download the DLL by itself. On Windows 11 or Windows 10, first identify the installed graphics adapter, then install the matching OEM or Intel driver and check whether the application is using the correct graphics stack.
What this file actually does
ialmgicd.dll is described as the OpenGL(R) Driver for Intel(R) Graphics Accelerator. It belongs to the Intel Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows NT(R) package and was developed by Intel Corporation.

The “ICD” portion means Installable Client Driver. In practical terms, an OpenGL application asks Windows for an OpenGL implementation, and the graphics driver supplies the vendor-specific component that communicates with the GPU. ialmgicd.dll was one of Intel’s older OpenGL ICD files.

This is not:
- A normal Windows system DLL

regsvr32 - A universal DLL shared by every Intel graphics generation
Historical reports associate the file with older Intel Graphics Accelerator and Graphics Media Accelerator driver packages. One documented legacy package contains version 6.14.10.4020, associated with an old x86 Windows driver bundle. That evidence is useful for identification, but it does not mean every copy of ialmgicd.dll has that version or that every Intel GPU used the same file.

Modern Intel driver packages may use different OpenGL ICD filenames. The goal is therefore not to preserve this exact filename at any cost. The goal is to install a graphics driver that matches the computer, Windows version, application architecture and hardware.
Do not download a lone copy from a DLL archive. An isolated file can have the wrong architecture, version, dependencies or source, and replacing it may hide a damaged or incompatible graphics installation.
Causes by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The code execution cannot proceed because ialmgicd.dll was not found” | Missing or incomplete Intel graphics package | Identify the adapter and reinstall its driver |
| “The program can’t start because ialmgicd.dll is missing from your computer” | Driver removal, failed installation or damaged files | Install the correct OEM graphics driver |
| “Can’t find the name of the Intel ICD OpenGL driver” | OpenGL cannot find a usable Intel ICD | Check Device Manager, driver provider and architecture |
An older game crashes and names ialmgicd.dll |
Legacy OpenGL incompatibility or corrupted driver | Repair the driver, then test another renderer if available |
| The application crashes only after a graphics update | Bad or unsuitable replacement driver | Roll back the display driver or use System Restore |
| The error appears after antivirus activity | The file may have been quarantined | Review Protection history before restoring anything |
| Only one application fails | Application files, settings or bundled dependencies may be damaged | Use the program’s repair or verify function |
| The computer shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter | The Intel driver is missing or not active | Install the manufacturer’s graphics package |
| The error occurs only over Remote Desktop or in a virtual machine | The application may not have access to the expected hardware OpenGL path | Test locally with the physical display adapter |
The filename alone cannot identify the exact application, GPU or cause. The same file can be named by an old game, an OpenGL utility, a design program or another application that depends on Intel’s graphics stack.
Fix 1: Identify the graphics adapter and driver
Do this before downloading anything. The exact adapter model determines which driver package is appropriate.
- Press Win + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Record every listed adapter exactly.
You may see an Intel adapter, a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, or a hybrid arrangement containing Intel and NVIDIA or AMD graphics.
To inspect the current driver:
- Right-click the Intel adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record Driver Provider, Driver Date and Driver Version.
- Open the Details tab if you need to inspect hardware identifiers.
- Check the General tab for a device status message or error code.
If the adapter is hidden:
- In Device Manager, select View.
- Choose Show hidden devices.
- Expand Display adapters again.
A hidden or disabled adapter can indicate an old driver installation, a hardware change or a stale device record. Do not assume that a message saying “The best drivers for your device are already installed” proves that the correct Intel OpenGL components are present.
Also check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application can use different parts of the graphics stack. Do not copy an x86 DLL into a 64-bit driver installation, or copy a 64-bit file into a 32-bit application or driver path.
Fix 2: Install the correct Intel graphics driver
The safest source is the computer manufacturer’s support page. Laptop and branded desktop manufacturers can customize graphics packages for their firmware, display wiring, power management and hybrid GPU configuration.
Find the driver using:
- The computer model or service tag
- The exact Intel adapter name
- The Windows version and architecture
- The manufacturer’s graphics or display driver category
If the OEM no longer provides a suitable package, use Intel’s official graphics driver catalogue or Intel Driver & Support Assistant. Make sure the package is intended for the exact graphics generation and Windows version. A newer package for a different Intel family is not automatically compatible.
Before installation, close the affected application and save your work. Then:
- Run the downloaded graphics driver installer.
- Choose the normal installation option.
- If the installer offers a clean installation, select it.
- Follow the prompts until installation completes.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager again.
- Confirm that the Intel adapter is listed without a warning icon.
- Start the affected application.
Success means the adapter is active, the driver is loaded without a Device Manager error, and the application can initialize its required graphics path. The original filename may not return in a current package, and that is not a failure by itself.

- PCIe 5.0 Support: PCI Express 5.0 x16 interface for maximum bandwidth with the latest workstation platforms.
- The package is for a different Intel graphics generation.
- The OEM requires its own customized package.
- Windows is the wrong architecture.
- The adapter is not actually Intel.
- The hardware is too old for the installed Windows version.
- A hybrid graphics system is being treated as a single-GPU computer.
Do not force an unrelated driver merely to make the installer proceed. For legacy Intel hardware, the final OEM-supported driver may be the correct choice even if it is older than the package offered by Intel.
Fix 3: Perform a clean graphics-driver installation
Use this path when the normal installer fails, Device Manager shows a warning, or the error began after several driver updates.
Intel’s documented clean-install process removes the existing device driver before installing the correct package. Download the appropriate driver first, but disconnect the computer from the internet before removing the current driver. This prevents Windows Update from immediately inserting a generic package during the process.
- Disconnect Ethernet or turn off Wi-Fi.
- Press Win + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the Intel adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Enable Delete the driver software for this device, if shown.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
- Run the OEM or Intel graphics driver installer you downloaded.
- Restart Windows again.
- Reconnect to the internet.
- Recheck Device Manager and test the application.
The screen may temporarily use a low-resolution display driver after removal. That is expected. If the Intel adapter disappears from Display adapters after restarting, use Action in Device Manager and select Scan for hardware changes, then run the prepared driver installer.
If the clean installation still fails, inspect the installer’s error message rather than copying ialmgicd.dll manually. A package that installs successfully but produces a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter afterward may be the wrong package, blocked by the OEM, or unsuitable for that Windows release.
Fix 4: Check hardware, Windows and graphics compatibility
Older Intel Graphics Accelerator hardware can be difficult to use after a Windows upgrade. Some old drivers were built for earlier Windows releases and may not provide a working OpenGL implementation on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Check these points:
- Open Device Manager.
- Confirm the exact Intel adapter.
- Open its Properties.
- Check the Driver tab for the provider and version.
- Read the General tab for an error code.
- Check the computer manufacturer’s support documentation for the last supported Windows version.
- Test the application locally, not through Remote Desktop.
- If the computer has NVIDIA or AMD graphics as well, confirm which GPU the application is selecting.
If the hardware is no longer supported on the installed Windows version, the practical choices are limited. Use the final compatible OEM driver, run the application on a supported system, or select DirectX, software rendering or another renderer if the application provides that setting.
Do not treat a newer Windows version as proof that an old OpenGL driver will continue to work. The application may require an OpenGL feature that the legacy adapter or its available driver cannot provide.
Fix 5: Repair or verify the affected application
If other OpenGL programs work and only one game or application reports ialmgicd.dll, the application installation may be the problem.
For a game with a launcher:
- Open its launcher.
- Open the game’s library or installation settings.
- Look for Verify, Verify integrity, Repair or Scan and repair.
- Run the check.
- Allow the launcher to replace damaged files.
- Restart the launcher and test again.
For a traditional Windows program:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the program from its legitimate installer.
A program-specific repair is particularly important when the driver works for other OpenGL applications. If the application bundles an old OpenGL component, reinstalling that program may be the definitive fix.

To review Microsoft Defender activity:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.

If a legitimate driver file was quarantined, reinstalling the complete driver package is safer than restoring a single DLL. The installer can place the correct files and dependencies together.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use Windows repair tools when you also see damaged system files, Windows features failing, update errors or other operating-system problems. They are not the primary way to recreate a missing Intel third-party driver file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the application.
Possible outcomes include:
- No component store corruption detected: Windows itself may be healthy.
- SFC found and repaired corrupted files: Restart and test again.
- SFC found files it could not repair: Run DISM again, restart and repeat SFC once.
- The error remains unchanged: Return to graphics-driver and application troubleshooting.
DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They should not be expected to supply an Intel driver file that is absent from the Windows component store.
Repeating system scans without knowing what changed is frustrating when the real problem is a mismatched graphics package. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what needs attention; its full version performs repairs, but it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the correct Intel driver.

Do not enable unrelated legacy components in the hope that they will add Intel’s OpenGL ICD. Features such as legacy multimedia components may help a particular old application, but they do not replace a graphics driver. If the application has a documented prerequisite, install that prerequisite from its legitimate vendor, separately from the Intel driver repair.
Fix 9: Do not register ialmgicd.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An OpenGL ICD is loaded by the graphics and OpenGL subsystem, not normally registered like a COM component.
Running this command is not a proper repair:
regsvr32 ialmgicd.dll
It may produce an error stating that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not mean the file needs another copy or a different registration command. It means the command is not appropriate for this type of driver file.

Roll back the display driver
- Press Win + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the Intel adapter.
- Select Properties.

- Record the application name, faulting module and exception information.
Also inspect the application’s own log folder. Compare the faulting module with the error shown on screen. A crash naming ialmgicd.dll may indicate an OpenGL compatibility problem, while a different module may reveal that the DLL message was only a secondary symptom.
If the problem occurs only in one Windows profile, create a temporary local user account and test the application there. A new profile can distinguish damaged application settings or cache data from a system-wide graphics problem.
Frequently asked questions
Is ialmgicd.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an Intel graphics driver component, specifically an older Intel OpenGL Installable Client Driver. Windows may report the missing file, but Windows Update or SFC is not guaranteed to recreate it.

No. A standalone download can be malicious, mismatched, incomplete or built for the wrong architecture. Install the complete graphics driver from the computer manufacturer or Intel.
Is this fixed by Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX or .NET?
Usually not. Those packages are different components. A missing Intel OpenGL ICD normally points to the graphics-driver installation, hardware compatibility or application configuration.
Why did a newer Intel driver not restore the filename?
Current driver packages may use different ICD filenames. A working compatible driver does not need to contain ialmgicd.dll.
Can I fix it with regsvr32?
No. This is not normally a self-registering DLL. Reinstall the graphics driver instead.

Do not install an Intel package based only on the DLL name. The computer may use another GPU, the adapter may be disabled, or the application may be using a stale configuration. Check the hardware model and Device Manager entries first.
Is this always an Intel hardware failure?
No. The cause may be a missing driver, wrong architecture, unsupported Windows version, application corruption, antivirus quarantine, a hybrid-GPU selection problem or a damaged Windows installation.
What is the safest order to try?
