icsvc.dll Missing: Repair Hyper-V Integration Services Safely

icsvc.dll is a Microsoft Windows system component, not a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or game runtime. If icsvc.dll is missing or could not be loaded, repair the Windows installation or the affected Hyper-V guest rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The file is the Virtual Machine Integration Component Service library. It normally resides at %WINDIR%System32icsvc.dll and supports Hyper-V guest services such as vmicshutdown, vmictimesync, vmickvpexchange, vmicheartbeat, vmicguestinterface, vmicvss, and vmicvmsession. Microsoft documents these services in its Hyper-V Integration Services reference.

Version and architecture guide

These entries come from Microsoft’s documented legacy Hyper-V integration-components update. They are useful for identifying an older guest package, not a complete version history for every Windows release.

Architecture File version Reported size Where it applies
x64 6.3.9600.17903 539,648 bytes 64-bit legacy Hyper-V guest package
x86 6.3.9600.17903 436,224 bytes 32-bit legacy Hyper-V guest package

On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files. Windows redirects many 32-bit applications to SysWOW64. Therefore, do not choose a replacement based on the host computer’s architecture. Choose it based on the affected guest operating system and the process reporting the error. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.

First determine where the error occurs

Before changing anything, establish whether the message appears on the physical Hyper-V host or inside a virtual machine.

If it appears inside a virtual machine

Repair the guest first. The guest owns its Windows files, services, architecture, updates, and antivirus history. A healthy host does not automatically repair a damaged guest installation.

This is especially important for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 guests running on newer Hyper-V hosts. Those guests may require Microsoft’s separate legacy Hyper-V integration-components update.

If it appears on the physical host

Repair the host installation and inspect its Hyper-V configuration. Do not assume that enabling Hyper-V again will replace a damaged system file.

If every virtual machine is affected

Check the host’s recent Windows updates, Hyper-V settings, and integration-service configuration. If only one guest is affected, concentrate on that guest instead.

To see the integration services from inside a Windows guest, open PowerShell as administrator and run:

Get-Service -Name vmic* | Format-Table -AutoSize

The command may show services that are stopped because they are disabled or not applicable. Do not manually start or disable services simply to clear the DLL message. Microsoft recommends managing integration services through Hyper-V and the guest’s normal service controls.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair system files

This is the safest first repair when the file is absent from System32, corrupted, or damaged after an interrupted update.

Step 1: Install updates

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on it.
  6. Reproduce the error.

If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

Step 2: Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress appears to pause at times.
  2. Restart Windows when it completes.

DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source. Microsoft’s system-file repair guidance recommends running DISM before SFC.

Step 3: Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart and test the affected guest or service.

A successful result normally says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC says it could not repair some files, inspect:

%WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.log

If Windows Update cannot supply the repair files, use a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a repair source matching the installed Windows edition, architecture, and servicing state. Microsoft describes this option in its repair-a-Windows-image documentation.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting slow and inconclusive. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, so it remains optional and is not a substitute for Microsoft’s repair path.

Fix 2: Install the official legacy Hyper-V integration update

Use this fix when the affected guest runs Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 on a newer Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016-based Hyper-V host.

Microsoft provides the Hyper-V integration components update through Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. The official package includes separate x86 and x64 files. Open Microsoft’s Hyper-V integration components update article from inside the guest or from the host.

Then:

  1. Identify whether the guest is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  2. Download the package intended for the guest architecture.
  3. Run the installer inside the guest, not merely on the host.
  4. Follow the installation prompts.
  5. Restart the guest.
  6. Test the Hyper-V operation that produced the error.

To check the guest architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Read System type.

On older Windows versions, right-click Computer or This PC, select Properties, and read System type.

Do not install both architectures just because the host is 64-bit. A 32-bit guest needs the x86 package, while a 64-bit guest needs the x64 package. Microsoft also notes that the update may need to be reinstalled after adding a language pack.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged-looking system file. A quarantine event does not prove that the file was malware.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and select Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Open entries involving icsvc.dll.
  5. Check the reported path, detection name, and action.
  6. Do not restore the file if it came from an untrusted DLL download site.
  7. If the file is in the normal Windows directory and its Microsoft provenance is trustworthy, follow your organization’s security policy before choosing Restore or Allow on device.
  8. Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC after the security decision.

Microsoft explains Protection History in its Windows Security guidance.

If the file repeatedly disappears after repair, perform a full malware scan and review security-product logs. Do not permanently weaken antivirus protection to keep a DLL in place.

Fix 4: Inspect Hyper-V features and guest services

This step helps determine whether Hyper-V is configured consistently. It is not a reason to enable Hyper-V on a computer that does not use virtualization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On the host:

  1. Open Start and type Windows features.
  2. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  3. Expand Hyper-V.
  4. Check whether Hyper-V Platform and Hyper-V Management Tools are installed as expected.
  5. Select Cancel unless you intentionally need to change the feature state.
  6. Restart only after making a deliberate configuration change.

Inside the guest, verify that the relevant integration services have not been disabled by policy or cleanup software. Use the PowerShell command shown earlier, then open Services and inspect a specific service only when you know which Hyper-V function is failing.

Microsoft’s Hyper-V integration-service management guidance explains how the services are enabled and controlled.

Fix 5: Update related drivers only when the symptoms point there

icsvc.dll is not normally repaired by reinstalling a graphics, chipset, or network driver. Consider drivers only when the error began with a virtual network, storage, display, or device failure.

To update a device driver:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the failing device.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows and test again.

To reinstall a driver:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the affected device.
  3. Select Uninstall device.
  4. Select Uninstall if prompted.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Install the driver from the computer, device, or virtualization vendor’s official support channel if Windows does not reinstall it.

Driver packages should match the guest or host they are intended for. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what it finds; driver installation is performed by the full version, so use it only as an optional convenience and verify every proposed driver.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a known recent change

If icsvc.dll worked until a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup utility, antivirus action, or configuration change, System Restore may be appropriate.

  1. Open Start and type Create a restore point.
  2. Open the matching result.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
  5. Select Next, then Finish.
  6. Allow Windows to restart.
  7. Test the affected guest or host.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. Microsoft documents the process in its System Restore instructions.

Fix 7: Repair Windows when component servicing still fails

If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, or several Windows components are damaged, back up important data and move to a supported recovery path.

On Windows 11, try:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now if the option is available.
  6. Follow the prompts and restart.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where supported. Microsoft describes the feature in its Windows repair reinstall guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If that option is unavailable, use Windows Recovery, System Restore, or an in-place repair installation with matching installation media. A clean installation should be the last resort after backing up data and confirming that the guest itself, rather than the host, is damaged.

What not to do

Do not download icsvc.dll from a DLL website

A random download can contain malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file intended for a different servicing state. Even a genuine-looking DLL may not fix the underlying component-store or Hyper-V problem.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and Microsoft’s official legacy Hyper-V package instead. Microsoft distributes this component through Windows servicing and integration-services packages, not as a universal standalone runtime.

Do not copy a DLL into System32

Manual copying can create a version mismatch and may overwrite a valid Microsoft file. Do not copy it from another PC unless an administrator has verified the exact Windows build, architecture, servicing state, and Microsoft signature as part of an advanced recovery procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not run regsvr32 icsvc.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. icsvc.dll is a Hyper-V service implementation DLL, not a typical COM component. Running:

regsvr32 icsvc.dll

is not a supported repair and may produce an entry-point error. Microsoft documents the command’s scope in its regsvr32 reference.

Do not reinstall unrelated runtimes first

Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET are not logical first fixes for this file. If a program reports several missing dependencies, identify the actual owning component instead of installing unrelated runtime packages.

FAQ

Is icsvc.dll legitimate?

Yes. It is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component named Virtual Machine Integration Component Service. Location, signature, and provenance still matter. A file with the same name in a user-download directory should not be trusted automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it malware?

The filename alone cannot establish that. Check the path, Microsoft signature, Windows Security history, and system integrity. A missing file is more commonly a servicing, corruption, quarantine, or legacy integration-services problem than proof of malware.

Why is it in C:WindowsSystem32?

Hyper-V integration services run inside Windows guests as ordinary Windows services. Their shared system components are stored in the Windows system directory. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit processes may be redirected to SysWOW64.

Do I need Hyper-V enabled?

Not necessarily. A damaged Windows component can produce an icsvc.dll message even when you do not actively use Hyper-V. If the computer never runs virtual machines, repair Windows and verify that the message is not actually naming another dependency.

What if only one virtual machine fails?

Repair that guest first, including its Windows updates, DISM, SFC, antivirus history, architecture, and legacy integration-components update if applicable.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I collect if the error remains?

Record the exact error text, whether it occurs on the host or guest, the Windows edition and build, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, the reported file path, Microsoft signature status, recent updates or software changes, Hyper-V service status, and related Event Viewer entries. That information distinguishes a damaged guest from a host configuration problem and prevents unsafe DLL replacement.
